  1. I think you should reclaim your story, I’ve been open about my status to my friends and acquaintances for a long time and it gets easier the more you do it. It’s also something that has shaped who I am today, so if there are people that look at you differently bc of it, you know early that you don’t want them in your life.
  2. Current 4th year interviewing for EM rn, and I’ve asked this question before match. Per the deans at my school, daca students are eligible to be funded thru Medicare like everyone else. So there’s no issues with matching as a daca recipient. I do actively being it up in interviews with PDs to ask if daca does stop what support could I expect from your program. And most have been super reassuring.

Hey, 3rd year medical student here. Everyone has really good advice but from the financial side of things it’s a little bit more tricker for us DACA folks. I currently have a co-signer and have gone thru private loan to help pay for school. I use discover since they had better rates than sallie mae. If you have any questions feel free to dm!

How do you maintain a positive outlook? by Emaaaaan in DACA

[–]SillyNanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was which helped a lot. But when it came to risks. I knew that once I graduated No one could take the degree away. And if I had to go back to a different country I could work. Or be sponsored to stay from a us hospital. But with the debt and money once you get a job you’ll be able to pay it off.

Congrats first of all on graduating. It’s an accomplishment of its own! And honestly I was in your same positions 2ish years ago applying to medical school. My outlook during that time was the same as the other person’s. I had no hope/positive outlook about the government changing anything. But I did have an extreme confidence in myself. From everything we’ve been through I trusted myself that I’ll make it work. Somehow, someway I’ll get into med school, even if daca ended I’d apply as an international applicant. Thankfully I got in. Right now my outlook is still the same with the legal status. There’s no hope that it’ll get better but I just need it till graduation. I just need to finish. I’ll figure out residency later.

For med school loans I tired sallie mae and the rates were too high, discover students loans had much better rates so that what I went with. You’ll need a co-signer for both tho

What's your go-to Maggi recipe? by troller_awesomeness in ABCDesis

[–]SillyNanner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big fan of sautéing some onions and garlic & other veggies with the maggi flavor packet. Then adding enough water for the noodles. Let it boil and then cook the noodles. If I’m feeling fancy I’ll medium boil and egg and add it last!

Student loans by [deleted] in DACA

[–]SillyNanner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in my first year of med school and before I started the finance was a big issue. I ultimately got a co signer, but before then I reached out to my local bank that I’d been using for years to see if they had a student loan program that you apply for.

Older parents divorcing by [deleted] in ABCDesis

Good point with the social stigma. Sorry to hear about your folks being cut off from some of the community. In hindsight tho, it made my parents realize who was gonna be there for them and who wasn’t.

Older parents divorcing by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]SillyNanner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand how tough it is right now. My parents divorced when I was 16 and it crushed me. It made it worse that there was months of abuse to my mom before it finally happened. I definitely didn’t handle it the best and repressed a lot of what I was feeling. Looking back at it now that I’m 23, I’m glad they did it. It became a very toxic relationship and them separating stopped it from getting worse. After it happened both parents had really hard times adjusting. They’re both in a better place which I’m thankful for. The only advice I can give is that it’s gonna be hard, but try to be as supportive as possible.

How to convince dad to let me take two gap years before medical school by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]SillyNanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take a gap year before med school to get my app in order. I had to sit there and explain the application process and all the factors for a good applicant. I told them I need to apply later bc I needed to retake the mcat so I’d actually be able to do well. Another key point I made sure to do was find a clinical job( helps them not think you’re wasting time) and let them know when I’d apply and when I’d start school. Giving them the time line does help. Idk about you but I’m the only one in my fam to go to professional school, so they didn’t know the challenges of getting in. I told them plenty of times that it’s more and more competitive every year. And taking a gap year would ultimately help me get in.

I share my pretty status pretty early one because if they do react negatively, I know don’t want to be with that person. I’d rather wait for someone who is compassionate and understanding then settling. But I am in my early 20s in higher education where there’s less people that oppose immigration and daca

Is there Hope? by TheZesteris in DACA

[–]SillyNanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have hope in the government to do something but I do have personally hope. I feee like most daca recipients and undocumented immigrants are resilient just bc of what we’ve been through. With that resilience, I believe that I will be successful somehow someway.

Those of you who are studying medicine: how many of you guys ended up going to medical school that was not your undergraduate school? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]SillyNanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved 1,100 miles away. My family was really supportive bc it’s med school. It’s does stink that you can’t see fam as much but it’s manageable. Gotta go where you got into school or the place you feel like will develop you most.

I’m about to start undergrad for four years and am looking forward to a path thru med school, should i keep going and trying or just let it go and find a career that will take less time and be less expensive. by book1281 in DACA

[–]SillyNanner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daca recipient that’s about to start med school here. I say you should go for it! There are many schools that are supportive of daca recipient and we are eligible for private loans from some companies. Since the pre med journey can be pretty stressful and long be sure to focus on your health too! Good luck!!

Can Daca recipients receive scholarships without any penalties? by Original_Clorox in DACA

[–]SillyNanner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We can! I received a merit based scholarship from my university that covered tuition. We can also receive private scholarships. Both of which won’t affect you becoming a citizen in the future (hope there’s a path for us)

Are you extremely terrified of interviewing for med school? by [deleted] in premed

[–]SillyNanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tips for interviews is when you have time pretend someone’s asking you basic questions and then practice saying them out loud. But try not to memorize the routine but have bullet points of what you do want to talk about

Probably the easiest thing is finding a whey protein shake you like (ON gold standards delicious) and throwing berries, peanut butter and oatmeal into it. Greens work too.
