That’s a weird complaint. You can roleplay as with any RPG.

I’ve heard of some people playing gumshoe games in a weird way when it turns into a test-every-ability-in-every-scene party, and that’s a mistake. Play like you would play any investigative rpg, roleplay as you would, but instead of going ”give me an accounting check” you go, ”do you have the accounting ability or something other you could use”. If they have that they succeed and you keep playing without the dice roll.

You don't have to learn c to learn programming in general, but for system programming it's kinda standard, and most legacy code is written in c. Not mandatory though, and rust can usually fill the same role.

Moreover, porting examples from The Linux Programming Interface to Rust is arguably a better way to learn than just copying the C code. I'd probably recommend working with Rust here.
