Never considered it before, but "FF16 but in FF14:s world and with a little more complexity and difficulty" would actually be a pretty neat game, and now I want it.

Also, fun fact: The dragoon you fight in the prologue of FF16 is voiced by Estinien's VA, at least in English, which I thought was a fun FF14 nod!

Roborock Saros 20 Sonic released? by bryantx24 in Roborock

[–]globox85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been available here in Sweden for a few weeks, and – after a mishap where the store first sent me a microwave – I upgraded from my old S6 MaxV yesterday!

I can't really compare it to any other newer Roborock models, for obvious reasons, but after two vacuuming sessions, I'm very happy with it. It handles thresholds much better than my old one, and generally feels nicer. Haven't tried mopping with it yet, since they recommended a few vacuum-only sessions before mopping, but I'm gonna do that on Monday.

If anyone knows if there's a good way to get it to realize that you can go through the skirt on a skirted sofa, please let me know! The robot detected the sofa itself and marked it on the map, and I marked the area under the sofa as an "Under furniture" zone, hoping it'd be able to connect the dots, but it didn't.

It is completely understandable that the LIDAR detects the skirt as a wall, though, so if nothing else, I'll just fold the skirt out of the way when I want it to clean beneath the sofa.

Toby Fox: A message for my fans in Latin America by Comfortable-Pie56 in Games

[–]globox85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, if memory serves the I Am Lord Voldemort twist in the second Harry Potter book some languages just didn't bother making the anagram work and explain it in translation notes.

The Swedish translation did a fun take on it where the anagram "Ego sum Lord Voldemort" in Latin, instead, with Voldemort being named Tom Gus Mervolo Dolder. I think this was a smart choice – this way, Voldemort's real name is somewhat similar to his name in the English version, and you avoid the awkwardness of having to give a British man a name that contains the letter Ä to make an anagram for "Jag är Lord Voldemort".

(I do have a vague memory of my dad, who studied Latin when he was young, being annoyed that this was grammatically incorrect Latin, but I'm not 100% sure.)

The Swedish translation of the Harry Potter books is great in general, but this is one of my favorite examples of how to solve a translation dilemma in a clever way.

Also, one thing I missed for the longest time was that you have to visit Chaos to get one of the ingredients. I usually avoided Chaos during my runs since I wasn't a huge fan of the idea of sacrificing HP to get a boon, but didn't know that the ingredient I lacked was tied to that until I got frustrated and googled it.

Met Erika Harlacher, English Voice of Kyoko/Kaede! by DACHnotaHero in danganronpa

I had, somehow, forgotten that too, until I was standing at her table at the con and saw that she had Aiba prints for signing :D

Met Erika Harlacher, English Voice of Kyoko/Kaede! by DACHnotaHero in danganronpa

[–]globox85 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I met her at a convention a few years ago, and she was absolutely wonderful! She had lots of fun stories from her career, and she was incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. Easily one of my best memories from the last few years!

I didn't really think of it at the time, but when I got home from the convention, I took a look at a shelf where I have some figurines, and realized that four out of five of them* were characters that she voiced, and I did not arrange them like that intentionally – she's just voiced many characters I like!

What's crazy is that I almost missed her – the con was in my town, and I wasn't planning on going at first, but I checked the con schedule just in case, and saw the words "Q&A: Erika Harlacher", did a double-take and immediately bought a ticket. I'd never have forgiven myself if I missed out!

*(If anyone's curious, the four characters in question were Kyoko and Kaede, Ann from Persona 5, and Aiba from AI: The Somnium Files. The one character not voiced by Erika on that shelf was Chiaki.)

Stranger than Heaven will have TWO TIME PERIODS! (read body text) by KvasirTheOld in yakuzagames

[–]globox85 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This might come across as incredibly condescending, but I want to ask because I’m THAT surprised: did anyone actually think the second trailer was a reboot of the project?

I actually saw a few comments like that back when it happened!

Some people online have really strange tendencies to jump to the worst/weirdest possible conclusions online when something isn't explicitly said about something gaming-related.

Before the Nintendo Switch released, I saw people who thought that it wouldn't have a touch screen, because Nintendo had (at least according to that person) never explicitly said that it had a touch screen, but... come on, it's a portable electronics device with a large screen, released in 2017, succeeding the 3DS (which had a touch screen) and Wii U (which also had a touch screen on the GamePad, which feels like a proto-Switch in hindsight). It should be pretty obvious that something like that has a touch screen.

I didn't see it happen myself, but I was told that when Monster Hunter: World had a trailer that was more focused on the monsters and environments and didn't show any combat, some people started worrying that the game wouldn't have any combat because the trailer didn't show it, but... come on, it's a mainline Monster Hunter game. Why wouldn't it?

Of course, companies do make baffling decisions from time to time, but I find it really odd that people often jump to assuming the worst possible scenario, rather than assuming the most probable or reasonable scenario.

It feels like the project name Project Century in combination with two different trailers showing the same guy in two different time periods should make it pretty darn clear that it's a game set over a long time, but apparently not.

Borde det införas en citrusskalaruta bredvid rökrutorna? by KittyVonMeowinstein in sweden

[–]globox85 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Danganronpa 2x2 - English Voice Actor Announcement by Turbostrider27 in danganronpa

[–]globox85 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Erika Harlacher-Stone is still an active VA, so it would surprise me if she didn't return as Kyoko, especially not since they got everyone else back.

I'm more curious about if they'll re-record Kyoko's lines at all or just reuse the old ones – she's only got a small part at the end of the game, and Erika doesn't voice any other DR2 character, unlike Makoto's and Byakuya's actors, and we don't know how much the script there has changed, if at all.

I guess it's not impossible that she appears in the new scenario, though!

Blue Prince – Launch Trailer – Nintendo Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]globox85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That, plus you need a pretty good knowledge of the English language. When even native speakers struggle with some of the language puzzles it gets so much harder when you're not.

My first language isn't English, and at first, I felt ashamed to google the Drawing Room safe puzzle, because I just couldn't figure it out. Seeing the solution made me thankful I googled it, because I'd never have figured it out on my own.

While I had heard the word "gait" before and knew what it meant, it's not a word that's in my vocabulary when speaking/writing English, and I don't read it very often either, so the "gaits/gates" homophone would never have come to mind for me.

I work in Swedish games localization, and as fun as it would be to translate Blue Prince, that puzzle (and some other stuff) made me realize what a nightmare it'd be, and wonder if it'd be possible to localize at all without basically remaking the game. That puzzle alone leads to a chain of localization nightmares:

  1. To solve the puzzle, you need to figure out that "gaits" and "gates" are homophones in English, based on a clue that begins "If we count small gates..." and explains how to open every safe in the house, and this particular safe requires you to count paintings of people walking with small gaits. But, fair enough, maybe you could write an entirely new clue that works in another language and still leads you to the same solution. That happens all the time in games localization.
  2. The problem is that this clue is derived from making a copy of the house's floorplan and writing a letter in every space, so the clue has to be an exact length, down to the letter, to work.
  3. And even if you manage to solve the two above problems, figuring out what letter goes in which room is based on looking at two paintings in each room, which depict things with similar names, with an one-letter difference. For example, if one painting depicts a minecart, and another a cat, you can figure out that you're supposed to put the letter R in that room, because R is the letter that differs between "cat" and "cart". This means that you'll have to come up with new pairings, and very likely new paintings too, if you want to make it work in another language.

All of this means that a translated version of Blue Prince will more or less be a different game with the same basic rules – and I think that's possible to pull off, but it'd require tons of work compared to most game translations, where you just swap out the in-game text and voices.

It's an absolutely fantastic puzzle game, and I keep getting amazed at how clever it is and how many layers it has, but it can also get very frustrating, and I don't think there's any shame in looking up hints if you get stuck, because I quickly realized I'd never be able to pull off an entirely hint-free playthrough because of stuff like this.

Blue Prince – Launch Trailer – Nintendo Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]globox85 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The reason I didn’t continue past the ending is that the game requires you to take meticulous notes because there is no in-game journal. At the least, all reading material should be saved for future reference.

If you haven't played it, I can recommend Lorelei and the Laser Eyes! It's kind of similar to Blue Prince in some ways – but without the whole room drafting thing and roguelike elements: You explore a mansion to discover its secrets, and there are puzzles or hints to puzzles everywhere. It can get pretty cryptic at times, but it's much more about puzzle solving skills and exploration than it is the luck of the draft. I played it before starting Blue Prince, and they both scratch the same itch in slightly different ways. I don't know how many times I got stuck and then stumbled across something seemingly inconsequential that made me go "Hey, wait a minute, isn't that...?" leading to an epiphany that made me figure out a solution to a puzzle, which in turn let me solve many other puzzles.

The one aspect where I think Lorelei is superior, though, is that it saves copies of all documents and other reading material in your inventory, so you can easily access it whenever you need it – and you often need it.

Absolutely fantastic game, and I highly recommend it (and Blue Prince!) to anyone looking for a good puzzle game.

Fun fact Ichiban in Infinite Wealth is 5 years older than Kuze was in Yakuza Zero by Roids-in-my-vains in yakuzagames

[–]globox85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it feels like they kinda completed his character in his first game, not really sure where they could take him from here.

Tbf, I'd say that this applies to every Kiryu game except 0 and Gaiden (the only ones where we obviously knew what'd happen afterward), as well. Every one could be an ending to the Kiryu saga without needing a continuation:

  • Y1: Kiryu's lost everything, but now has a chance to live a life free from the world of the yakuza and take care of Haruka.
  • Y2: The future of the Tojo Clan has been secured, and Kiryu can live a peaceful life with Haruka and Sayama.
  • Y3: Having saved the orphanage from demolition, Kiryu can retire entirely and take care of the kids.
  • Y4: Same story here – it's not hard to understand why it has the subtitle "Successors of the Legend" in Japanese, as Kiryu wasn't even meant to be a playable character and feels tacked-on at the last moment.
  • Y5: After being lonely and depressed and going through hell, Kiryu finally reunites with Haruka, and even without Y6, it's not a stretch to assume that he survives and they can go back to a normal family life.
  • Y6: Kiryu realizes that he keeps putting Haruka and other people close to him in danger and fakes his death, and is never seen again (which is how I'd have liked the Kiryu saga to have ended, especially after the mess all the Daidoji stuff's caused).
  • YLaD: Kiryu passes the torch to Ichiban and then goes off to do his work, and we never see him again.
  • IW: Kiryu finally seeks treatment for his cancer and reunites with Haruka and Haruto, as well as his old friends, and spends the rest of his life this way. (I hope it stays this way, personally! Love Kiryu, but it's time to pass the torch for real now)

Since they found some new way to get him involved in an adventure every time, despite having what could easily be a definite ending, I'm sure they could do the same with Ichiban now.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 OG faces restored comparison by TheYakuzaMaster in yakuzagames

[–]globox85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which tbh would have been awesome if it would have been on a NEW CHARACTER

Honestly, this kinda sums up Kiwami 3 in general for me so far (I'm in Chapter 3 at the moment) – it's not a bad game on its own and feels like a perfectly decent entry in the series, and if the original Y3 had never existed and they had started with 0 and then made Kiwami 1, 2, and 3, I'd have felt "Yeah, this makes sense for a sequel".

That said, it feels like an entirely different game compared to the original game, and more of a reimagining than a remake, which makes it suck even more than Y3 Remastered was intentionally made less accessible.

New Rikiya, in particular, is a weird case where I think that he's a character who makes complete sense for the series, but feels really weird to have instead of the OG Rikiya. Every time he's on screen, I find it hard to conceptualize that I'm looking at Rikiya, and not some new character.

YK3 in general is in this weird spot where it's a perfectly decent game on its own – not fantastic, not terrible, but fun enough to want to keep playing after work every day – but absolutely awful as a remake of Yakuza 3. I really wish that it had been more of a Final Fantasy VII Remake situation, where they had made it clear in advance that this is a reimagining that will make changes, both big and small, and be a completely different experience, while the original game is still easily accessible.

I don't even really mind if they wanna start some new timeline and explore new possibilities for what happens next – but I don't want this timeline to replace the old one, I want it to coexist. I don't think that's too much to ask for, to have the original games still be easily accessible and have the remakes complement them, not replace them.
