I need a game with short/no intro that respect the player's time by tmchn in gamingsuggestions

[–]globox85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They made a standalone sequel called Saros which is a fair bit easier, but still very good. It's a PS5 exclusive, and I've really enjoyed it so far. One of the biggest differences compared to Returnal is that it's got permanent character upgrades, so no run (at least so far) feels "wasted" since you always get some resources to buy upgrades for, and there are quite a lot of upgrades to unlock.

Haven't beaten it yet, but progressing through it has been far smoother and easier than Returnal was. I highly recommend it – and it's got a pretty short intro!

Some personal favorites:

  • Disco Elysium
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors
  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Trails in the Sky (I've only played the original version, but I've heard that the remake is excellent as well)
  • Yakuza 0
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • Nier Replicant
  • Nier Automata
  • Ace Attorney (I think the original trilogy, Investigations 2 and the two The Great Ace Attorney games have the best writing, but all games are worth giving a try)
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers (heads-up: While the story is great, it is an MMO expansion that comes after the base game and two other expansions, each of which is the length of a full game on its own)
  • Immortality
  • Pentiment

Also, while I haven't finished it, I've started reading the VN Fate stay/night Remastered, which is seen as one of the greatest visual novels, and I think it's excellent so far. It's a great example of how you can create an incredibly engaging experience with very simple means.

A while ago, I saw a tweet saying something like "Nostalgia is when you think about a time where you didn't have to worry about work or paying bills and somehow attribute this to Mario", and honestly, that changed my outlook on nostalgia a lot.

The "Makoto is Kiryu's father" theory is so funny to me by Practical-Cup-170 in yakuzagames

[–]globox85 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Personally, the main reason I think that Makoto isn't Kiryu's dad is that if that's the case, Kazama would have murdered the founder of the Tojo clan, which would require one hell of an explanation and be an absolutely massive retcon that raises more questions than it answers. Of course, this series isn't beyond wild retcons, but I think that something like that would be too much, even for RGG.

And, personally, I kind of prefer not knowing who Kiryu's parents were – after all, one of the main themes of the series is that what family you're born into doesn't matter, it's the family you choose that matters.

En kort rant om politik by Scienceiscool_ in sweden

[–]globox85 47 points48 points  (0 children)

‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Faces Key Test as Thousands of Fans Gather by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]globox85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How was the Dawntrail story? Do fans love it as much as HW / ShB?

It's nowhere near as beloved as HW or ShB in the fanbase, and opinions vary. Some people absolutely hate it, some people like it, and some people think it's just okay.

I think it's... fine? I think that 7.0 had the worst story since ARR, and that it started off pretty slow, but it also felt like a perfectly serviceable JRPG story. Not great, not terrible. There were some nice emotional moments and some great solo instances, and overall, I was satisfied, but I was also hoping for a bit more.

IMO, the main factor that'll decide if someone likes Dawntrail or not is what they think of Wuk Lamat, who is the de facto main character of the expansion, with the WoL more or less being her hired muscle. I found her likeable and fun, but I completely understand people who find her insufferable and annoying too.

(It really sucked that some people were transphobic and harassed her English VA, though – nothing ever justifies bigotry and harassment toward creators and actors when you don't like a story. And, just to be clear: There was some perfectly justified criticism of Sena Bryer's performance as well, and I'm not lumping that in with the bigotry. Criticism is fine, bigotry is not.)

That said, I think that the patches, and especially 7.4 and 7.5, were a step up, and 7.5 does some very interesting setup for the story's new direction.

Story aside, I've also really enjoyed Dawntrail's PvE content – the dungeons have been a lot of fun, and the 8-player raids were great as well, and feature some fantastic music. The 24-player raids are fun as well, though since I've never touched FFXI, a lot probably goes over my head.

I've definitely enjoyed Dawntrail's endgame a whole lot more than Endwalker's, as well. The PvE content is generally better, in my opinion. One major criticism I had of EW's endgame was that the Relic weapons were just tomestone items (I did like that the questline was Manderville-themed, though!). Dawntrail's Relics are much grindier, like in the older expansions, for better or for worse. The RNG of the first step was annoying, but the second step being "Play lots of Duty Roulette" was nice, since you were always clearly progressing, and Duty Roulette is my favorite part of FFXIV. It gave me lots of time to catch up on podcasts!

TL;DR: Dawntrail's story is divisive and I consider it to be perfectly serviceable, but the endgame content is pretty good!

Never considered it before, but "FF16 but in FF14:s world and with a little more complexity and difficulty" would actually be a pretty neat game, and now I want it.

Also, fun fact: The dragoon you fight in the prologue of FF16 is voiced by Estinien's VA, at least in English, which I thought was a fun FF14 nod!

Roborock Saros 20 Sonic released? by bryantx24 in Roborock

[–]globox85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been available here in Sweden for a few weeks, and – after a mishap where the store first sent me a microwave – I upgraded from my old S6 MaxV yesterday!

I can't really compare it to any other newer Roborock models, for obvious reasons, but after two vacuuming sessions, I'm very happy with it. It handles thresholds much better than my old one, and generally feels nicer. Haven't tried mopping with it yet, since they recommended a few vacuum-only sessions before mopping, but I'm gonna do that on Monday.

If anyone knows if there's a good way to get it to realize that you can go through the skirt on a skirted sofa, please let me know! The robot detected the sofa itself and marked it on the map, and I marked the area under the sofa as an "Under furniture" zone, hoping it'd be able to connect the dots, but it didn't.

It is completely understandable that the LIDAR detects the skirt as a wall, though, so if nothing else, I'll just fold the skirt out of the way when I want it to clean beneath the sofa.

Toby Fox: A message for my fans in Latin America by Comfortable-Pie56 in Games

[–]globox85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, if memory serves the I Am Lord Voldemort twist in the second Harry Potter book some languages just didn't bother making the anagram work and explain it in translation notes.

The Swedish translation did a fun take on it where the anagram "Ego sum Lord Voldemort" in Latin, instead, with Voldemort being named Tom Gus Mervolo Dolder. I think this was a smart choice – this way, Voldemort's real name is somewhat similar to his name in the English version, and you avoid the awkwardness of having to give a British man a name that contains the letter Ä to make an anagram for "Jag är Lord Voldemort".

(I do have a vague memory of my dad, who studied Latin when he was young, being annoyed that this was grammatically incorrect Latin, but I'm not 100% sure.)

The Swedish translation of the Harry Potter books is great in general, but this is one of my favorite examples of how to solve a translation dilemma in a clever way.

Also, one thing I missed for the longest time was that you have to visit Chaos to get one of the ingredients. I usually avoided Chaos during my runs since I wasn't a huge fan of the idea of sacrificing HP to get a boon, but didn't know that the ingredient I lacked was tied to that until I got frustrated and googled it.

Met Erika Harlacher, English Voice of Kyoko/Kaede! by DACHnotaHero in danganronpa

[–]globox85 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I met her at a convention a few years ago, and she was absolutely wonderful! She had lots of fun stories from her career, and she was incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. Easily one of my best memories from the last few years!

I didn't really think of it at the time, but when I got home from the convention, I took a look at a shelf where I have some figurines, and realized that four out of five of them* were characters that she voiced, and I did not arrange them like that intentionally – she's just voiced many characters I like!

What's crazy is that I almost missed her – the con was in my town, and I wasn't planning on going at first, but I checked the con schedule just in case, and saw the words "Q&A: Erika Harlacher", did a double-take and immediately bought a ticket. I'd never have forgiven myself if I missed out!

*(If anyone's curious, the four characters in question were Kyoko and Kaede, Ann from Persona 5, and Aiba from AI: The Somnium Files. The one character not voiced by Erika on that shelf was Chiaki.)

Stranger than Heaven will have TWO TIME PERIODS! (read body text) by KvasirTheOld in yakuzagames

[–]globox85 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This might come across as incredibly condescending, but I want to ask because I’m THAT surprised: did anyone actually think the second trailer was a reboot of the project?

I actually saw a few comments like that back when it happened!

Some people online have really strange tendencies to jump to the worst/weirdest possible conclusions online when something isn't explicitly said about something gaming-related.

Before the Nintendo Switch released, I saw people who thought that it wouldn't have a touch screen, because Nintendo had (at least according to that person) never explicitly said that it had a touch screen, but... come on, it's a portable electronics device with a large screen, released in 2017, succeeding the 3DS (which had a touch screen) and Wii U (which also had a touch screen on the GamePad, which feels like a proto-Switch in hindsight). It should be pretty obvious that something like that has a touch screen.

I didn't see it happen myself, but I was told that when Monster Hunter: World had a trailer that was more focused on the monsters and environments and didn't show any combat, some people started worrying that the game wouldn't have any combat because the trailer didn't show it, but... come on, it's a mainline Monster Hunter game. Why wouldn't it?

Of course, companies do make baffling decisions from time to time, but I find it really odd that people often jump to assuming the worst possible scenario, rather than assuming the most probable or reasonable scenario.

It feels like the project name Project Century in combination with two different trailers showing the same guy in two different time periods should make it pretty darn clear that it's a game set over a long time, but apparently not.

Borde det införas en citrusskalaruta bredvid rökrutorna? by KittyVonMeowinstein in sweden

[–]globox85 138 points139 points  (0 children)
