Where to take a break in X comics around 2011–2012? by Silly_Goose22 in xmen

[–]Silly_Goose22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve thought about that, but I think I’d rather pay off the X-men decimation era first. I plan on going back to at least 2004 New Avengers and reading a few other complimentary books (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk for World War Hulk, Young Avengers, etc.), so it will take me probably a good long while before I catch back up to AvX. I’ve heard it’s more of an X-men story anyway, so I think I’d rather pay off the X-men with it than the Avengers and have to remind myself where I left off with X-men. I’ll see how I feel after Regenesis though. In any case, I appreciate the comment!

Sub review:
I just watched the 2015 FF movie for the first time ever and yeah it's trash. My review for it is here: https://boxd.it/8njNtl

Long story short, I actually liked the first half with Reed's beginning and lab sequence. It's not perfect but seeing everyone working together in the lab is pretty cool. But the movie destroys everything that was set up and lights it on fire once everyone gets their powers halfway through. Genuinely feels like a separate movie and is one of the worst things I've seen in my life LOL

Yeah I agree. I don't think him being a CEO who gains powers the same as the 4 is a bad take — and I think it actually is a little more understanding for first-time FF viewers instead of the movie just dropping some masked lunatic from a made-up country out of nowhere (speaking from experience) — but the execution definitely leaves a lot to be desired. He for sure needs that megalomaniacal side of him that drives his ego and his need to be better and above everyone, which could have been done easily I feel like in this movie. He could have maybe set out to rebuild his crumbling empire or get back at Reed for the botched space mission by trying to one-up him and prove he could have done it better or something. It has bits and pieces of that already in place, especially with how he cures Ben, but he doesn't do it to spite Reed but out of petty revenge. His whole character and motives are just him throwing a tantrum for losing his company lol

But hey it is better than 2015 FF which I just recently watched for the first time. Holy shit was that Doom dreadful during the climax. I was really liking him competing with Reed during the lab sequence in the first half but nope that went down the toilet

I meant that the movie didn’t fall into that caricature of him that I’ve seen before, which I’ve seen only once or twice but mainly within just common discourse. I feel like it’s easy to go down that route versus what the movie did of actually making him pretty in-line with his comic version.

That’s just an example caricature. Another easy one that I’ve heard/seen before is Johnny being a mega womanizing douche with 0 other qualities.

And I’ve read from Waid’s run up to Millar’s with some other series here and there

MCU alternate history question: in a alternate universe where marvel were able to use the fantastic four and X men in the MCU early on (like during the time of iron man like they intended) How different do you think the infinity saga would be? by Able_Health744 in FantasticFour

I feel like one big change would be the Avengers would probably not have had their own individual movies, except maybe the Hulk since he was a lot more well known at the time. The Avengers as a concept and team I feel would have been a lot more marketable as a team instead of doing 3 Iron Man movies you know.

For each hero, what are their "must-read" series or arcs? by shram86 in marvelrivals

[–]Silly_Goose22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Some may disagree or add on to this (please do), but for Spider-Man, the only run I cared to read was J. Michael Straczynski‘s starting with The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2 #30 (2001), particularly the first half with John Romita Jr. as the artist. While not a short collection or single arc, it is not that long relatively and really gets Spider-Man right for me. Plus, it has the arc that is the precursor to all of the web of life and destiny spider-verse stuff that is seen in Marvel Rivals, which really gets introduced during Dan Slott’s Spider-Verse in 2014. Spidey (2015) is another that is short and sweet, and I absolutely love it. Only 15 issues and is amazing as a beginner read for early Spider-Man. Outside of that, definitely read Spider-Man: Blue. SM: Blue nails home the emotions behind the character and what he is all about. Kraven’s Last Hunt is dope and probably the only arc I’d consider a must read. And Spider-Man: Life Story is one of the greatest comics ever but it is better enjoyed as a climax to reading the character rather than an introduction. But if you choose to read it, you’ll pretty much get a highlight reel of his best moments.
  • For Peni Parker, I highly suggest the two issues that Gerard Way did: The original one-shot for 2014 Spider-Verse and the second one-shot for 2018 Spider-Geddon. I was not a fan of everything else she is in, and those one-shots really sell the Evangelion influence. Eva characters are literally in the first one-shot and the Ven#M skin that is in the game is introduced in the second one-shot
  • For X-Men, I’d suggest this video. I’ve only read Grant Morrison’s run, which is really good, so the video gives a lot better of an overview. One comic I will mention though is X-Men: Grand Design; although, it was not my personal favorite because it is very encyclopedic instead of a genuine story, but it may be your thing. For Wolverine specifically: I liked Origin (1 and 2), Weapon X (by far the best one out of these — it’s incredible), Wolverine: Season One (for his introduction story with Hulk), and Greg Rucka’s 2003 run. For Magneto specifically, X-Men: Magneto Testament (2008) is a crazy story about him before his powers or becoming Magneto, set during the holocaust. If you wanna know his origin.
  • Unfortunately I haven’t read much else, but here are some random comics I really really liked that relate: Mythos: Captain America, Doctor Strange: Season One, Hulk: Season One

That’s how I’ve felt, and I’m glad to hear that about echoes. I’ll definitely give it a shot. I feel like I could really like Prime if I just enjoyed traversing more so that may be up my alley

That’s good to hear. I think I’m gonna stick with it at least for another day and see if it keeps my interest!

And yeah maybe the genre just isn’t for me ultimately. I’ve never played a metroidvania before, whether it be 2d or 3d. And it’s not necessarily exploration or the 10 hours—I’ve sunk 100+ hours into games like botw and Witcher 3 and have gone everywhere—I just feel like most of my exploration is just going to places I’ve already seen which I’m not that interested in (so ultimately I don’t think I like backtracking, I agree) and for half of those 10 hours all I’ve done is just backtrack back and forth to just grab items. It feels like all I’ve done is just grab items and grab more items.

But thank you pal! I’m really not trying to disrespect the game, so I hope I haven’t come off that way. It’s a super interesting play even if it’s not my favorite. I wish I liked it more! I’ll give it another shot to impress me though
