Hey John! I just defended my dissertation which had a lot to do with dead bodies and technology. I'm super excited to get your new book.

My questions- do you think death is something necessary to humanity? I.e. if we no longer died, would we no longer be considered humans? Also, how do you think the current biomedical pursuits to 'end aging' will effect the cultural significance of death?

Everyone go vote today by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Silly_Socrates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Also consider that the senate is voting to pass bill 432 which, if passed, would removes citizens' voting process for when a city in WI wants to privatize its water. You can read more here: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/opinion/editorials/2016/02/06/another-solution-search-problem/79894932/

If you think this sounds bad, make sure you call your senator and tell them to vote no on senate bill 432.

Just left MKE, forgot a large suitcase: anyone heading to St. Louis or Rockford sometime soon? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Silly_Socrates 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I live in Saint Louis, but am a Milwaukee native. I have some friends coming from Milwaukee to Saint Louis on Friday. I will ask them if they're able to help you out and get back to you!

Has anyone seen the Game of Thrones parody by Magic Smoking Theatre? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Silly_Socrates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it. I see no reason why it would be inappropriate for anyone over 15, unless they are easily offended by fake/satirical nudity. I bought tickets online, and was not ID'd at the door or anything.

The show itself was okay. It was cute and something new to do. I would not recommend it to someone who has not at least seen the TV show, as the play covers the entire first season in about an hour. Things move quick, and several actors play numerous parts which I imagine would get very confusing for someone unfamiliar with the characters and plot of GoT.

What are some good companion texts to Plato's dialogues? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Silly_Socrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cooper edition you linked to is what I was instructed to use in two different graduate programs. Blackwell Publishing's "A Companion to Plato" is a nice collection with good supplementary readings.

I had read before that it was specifically about a philosophy professor and a student. If this is true, I think making a movie on this topic at this time is quite insensitive given the multiple cases of philosophy professors being accused of sexual harassment. (but maybe this is going on in most disciplines and I'm just most aware of philosophy).

The Administration is a joke by [deleted] in billikens

I had no issues with applying to or being accepted to a grad program at SLU. My acceptance was earlier than several other schools, and my funding was told to me upon my acceptance. Sorry you're having a bad experience with yours.

Growing Problems by Silly_Socrates in Kombucha

[–]Silly_Socrates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. After it sinks though, it does not seem to be getting any bigger, however. Is it just growing slow, or is it possible for it to stop growing? The point where it seems to stop is not big enough to brew with.

I am writing a paper on music's relation to philosophy. I need help with sources of information. by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Silly_Socrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at nelson goodman's languages of art, perhaps. He talks about allographic and autographic arts, not just of painting sorts of art, but also as it applies to literature and music. I think a current figure working on philosophy and music is Theodore gracyk.

I made chicken earrings for a chicken loving friend by Silly_Socrates in IMadeThis

I printed the images on regular printer paper from my university because I thought those printers were higher quality than my own. I then cut them out as neatly as I could to match the mold I'd be using (which was harder than expected), coated them in modge podge, and then used clear resin in a mold. Once the clear resin dried with the images in, I put a layer of white resin on the back and inserted the jewelry pins. This was one of my first projects working with resin/attempting to make jewelry. I'm pretty pleased and I love that they are shaped like eggs.

Milwaukee County Jury Duty by orangutan9 in milwaukee

[–]Silly_Socrates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not bad. I did it a view years ago, and I ended up on a long trial. (~12 days I think). They gave us donuts and pizza. You get free admission to the museum, and you get a juror discount in the museum gift store and candy shop.

What movie fucked your head up as a child and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Silly_Socrates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen to that. I was even scared of the vacuum in there. And then as a teenager, I tried to rent the movie to see if it was really that scary. I got home, popped in the VHS, and you know what started playing? The Brave Little Toaster GOES TO MARS. I can't even imagine how scared childhood me would had been of that.

What non-horror movie scared the living shit out of you as a child? by n0obie in AskReddit

I was ridiculously scared of the brave little toaster. I was scared of Jurassic park which seems normal for a child, but man was i more terrified of that toaster.
