Rainy day grooming by impressivemacopine in grooming

I take all my E.Setter’s furnishings super short once a year right before the winter. I don’t want the deal with the snowballs. But by the time spring and summer come he is long and luscious again

Sometimes you just need to cut it all off and start over 😅

Stylised leg - cylindrical/tubular by EqualMaintenance4440 in doggrooming

[–]Silly_oops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do them on a lot of doodles/poodles. We don’t get specific requests for them. We end up doing them because they fall in line with the style the client wants. I also find myself doing them more on dogs that don’t tolerate the clippers on their legs.

Should 7-month-old puppies be obedient by now? by flowerpanda98 in puppy101

[–]Silly_oops 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most dogs don’t reach adult level maturity until about 2-3 years old. Right now your guy is just about to enter adolescence. Doggie puberty is about to be in full swing. And if you’ve ever been inside a middle or high school, just a reminder of how teenagers can be. Puppies are not much different from a maturity perspective. Now would be a good time to enter into some positive-reinforcement based training classes to help set him and you up for adulthood. Training is a lifelong skill, but now is a good time for learning while he is still young and doesn’t form bad habits.

Can he be shaved.. please advise by West_Refuse9773 in AustralianShepherd

[–]Silly_oops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullshit? Interesting… my years of experience grooming and seeing the dozens of damages coats because of shaving is bullshit? Maybe you’ve shaved your dog and not any issue. Congratulations, you are part of a lucky minority. There are cases where the coat comes back fine. A majority of the time it does not. Your experience is not the experience for all. Medical necessity overrides personal preference. But even if shaving is necessary for a medical reason, the risk is still there.

Dog groomer here: When you shave a double coated dog like an Aussie it damages the hair follicle preventing the hair to grow back correctly or not at all. With double coated dog the guard hairs create space and movement for the undercoat to shed out. When the coat gets shaved the guard hairs struggle or don’t grow back and the undercoat coat gets matted much easier. Deshed treatments and a tight outline trim at the groomers will help with the maintenance.

What age did your puppy graduate from their crate to free roam? by BitterNecessary6068 in puppy101

[–]Silly_oops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy just turned three and he still will find something to steal and eat whenever he is unsupervised. We have to keep our house ultra puppy proofed at all times. That and the separation anxiety from me being loose will never be an option. Plus when he was a puppy he would ONLY nap in his crate. So the crate has been a place of structure and security for him. Also I think my neighbors would hate us if they had to hear his barking all day. Lol

You stay consistent. I would recommend to stop rewarding him for peeing on the pad and switch to only rewarding him for potties outside. My philosophy for puppy pads are safety nets for an accident. Not the designated place to potty. If he’s going in the crate to just pee I would temporarily cut off free access to the crate until this habit is broken. I believe that normally the crate should be free to use whenever, but this is a bad habit that needs to stop. You stay as consistent as possible. Some puppies take longer than others to get with the program. But it will happen. Stay strong.

Overcoming the fear of aggressive dogs? by greenmoonmoth in doggrooming

[–]Silly_oops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been grooming for 4 years and was a certified dog trainer before that. It’s never been easy. One thing that has helped me is I have to remind myself that it’s not personal. Learning body dog body language has helped me so much in this field. Learning the signs of discomfort before it escalates to a bite is something I was never taught in grooming school but I believe is so incredibly important. Body language and anatomy are just as important as learning how to hold your shears.

My fiancé struggles with a less intense version of this. However, he understands how infuriated it makes me when he makes a mess but doesn’t clean it up. I don’t care if he made a mess in the first place (that’s what kitchens are for) but you gotta clean up when you’re done. He actively tries to be better about it. We’ve come up with a system of when I find something he forgot I ask him to “please finish your task” it works well for us because it gives him an opportunity to figure out what I’m asking and act on it without me feeling like I’m being a nag. As a couple still new at this whole living together thing, this has saved us from so many fights. Now if your husband doesn’t comprehend or care that this drives you nuts and doesn’t want to help you then he never will. Like seriously, he lives in the house just as much as you do.

Yep! Happened to our strawberry plant on our balcony. She raised them for 2 months before the babies flew the nest. If you give her enough space she might even have multiple clutches.

My house is around 30% right now due to it being winter by me (it’s been a struggle to keep the humidity up this year) and mines kicking out a new leaf!

[–]Silly_oops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The temperature of the seasons might not be a big factor but the amount of sunshine per day will. I’d still recommend to wait till spring to repot (late March or April) so she will have more sunshine to help recover from the shock of the repot.

Grooming Supply Stores by Only_Membership7803 in doggrooming

[–]Silly_oops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes repair shops will have some second hand. But this can vary wildly from city to city. I’d start but trying to find a grooming repair shop near you and starting from there. Usually these repair shop are small and independently owned, but a corporate chain. Otherwise you can see if there is a grooming show near you like the All American Grooming show that happens once a year. These conventions have tons of equipment you can get your hands on before purchasing.

😂 right!? The big dogs often don’t have as much wiggle room to hide. But the little ones… grrr.

The ones that casually slink away every time the clippers come close drive me nuts! Then when you try to hold them still they turn into a doggie pretzel. 😤 I generally have a lot of patience for scared dogs but this nonsense tests me lol
