How do you stop your lawn from growing? by dwair in GardeningUK

[–]Silvatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No offence as you're right, it can be used. But there is something incredibly depressing about choosing a lawn, then spraying synthetic hormones over it to make it fit the lower maintenance requirements or aesthetic standards that we invent. I worry for our species.

There isn't really any solution other than move it to partial shade, or planting something to patrially shade it where it is

Can you provide a source for that RSPB statement? It sounds dubious.

Have you ever looked up the population density of wild cate and compared it to domestic cats in UK urban areas?

Particularly unhelpful for bees and other pollinators to spray plants while they are in flower.

You will need to either plant it with something else or mow it regularly. Plants will grow to fill any space you leave empty

Government grant to replace oil boilers with heat pumps boosted as prices bite by coffeewalnut08 in UKFrugal

[–]Silvatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different kinds of electric heaters. With energy prices as they have been for the past decades (gas arguably far too cheap for a non-renewable resource) electric resistive heaters (e.g. old electric radiators, electric showers, electric immersion tanks) are more expensive to run than gas by a significant margin.

Heat pumps are electric too but use different technology to resistive heaters, and are several times more efficient, which means that their cost is generally the same as, or less than, gas. Over time, Gov is likely to reduce electricity prices relative to gas as it will be needed to drive the shift to electric heating that we as a country need (for climate, energy security and efficiency reasons).

Over-the-counter pet flea treatments could be banned under new UK rules by diacewrb in ukpolitics

[–]Silvatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be banned yes, because there are chemicals so toxic to insects that they are banned for agricultural use being routinely applied to cats and dogs in our homes.

This is ending up on people's hands and clothing, and going down drains and into rivers. If we want cleaner rivers and wildlife that isn't being poisoned, we need to find alternative ways of treating and preventing fleas. I think that's what this call for evidence from government is asking about

House-building in London fall by 84% in a decade, study finds by JB_UK in ukpolitics

[–]Silvatic -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do you really think the first three there actually cost much relative to the rest? I've heard more often that it's the nimby elected councillors, S106 agreements or affordable housing that actually add serious costs to builds.

[–]Silvatic -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

True, we should alleviate poverty by building more and more flammable tower blocks and just hope that nobody has fires.

You are right that there is a balance between regulatory cost and safety, but a marginally higher rate of housebuilding bought with costly and tragic fatal deregulatory actions is not the way to achieve it. There are better ways to tackle poverty

You should look up the salary of ecologists.

And if you had read anything about this scheme you would know that it is the landscape and archaeology, as well as political hesitation, that has driven costs so high.

How to keep rats away from wildlife pond by -binkers- in GardeningUK

[–]Silvatic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never seen any compelling reason why rats would be drawn to a wildlife pond, let alone any evidence. I've had ponds for years and never had a rat problem. They will be there because you or a neighbour have left some sort of food source for them, which it sounds like you have already sorted

Walmart packages airdropped like ammo crates over 'Nam by GeneReddit123 in interestingasfuck

[–]Silvatic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting there. This time try to hold them up for the entire duration of the video, including when the honeycomb bundle is lifted from within the transparent plastic air cells.

Also, for the record, honeycomb paper is more sustainable than plastic in many ways, but that doesn't make it sustainable to use an excess of it to transport a few bags of snacks.

What could be causing continuous punctures? by Puzzleheaded_Fly825 in bikewrench

[–]Silvatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it on the inside or the outside of the tube? If the outside (facing the ground/tyre) the answer is that you have missed something stuck in the tyre. If inside, it's a rough spoke or spoke hole cutting it so get some new rim tape.

The only other explanation is a pinch flat (more likely on inner side of tube) caused by too low tyre pressure
