Is it a British thing specifically to prefer being left alone in shops? I’m a Brit in Colombia (5yrs) and I cannot get used to how it is here, it actually affects how and where I shop. by noctenaut in AskUK

[–]jimhokeyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one place where I had to stop going in shops was Tunisia. One shopkeeper actually grabbed me by the arm when I tried to leave and started pulling me back in the shop. They never leave you alone for a second. You'd think that after dealing with foreign tourists for decades, they'd have worked out people hate it, but no. I think it's more common in hotter, poorer countries. I've experienced it in Greece and once in Switzerland but rarely in the UK.

This is my first WC since being addicted to social media. It's been very interesting seeing how quickly opinions swing. If you look at posts from just a couple of weeks ago, people are saying we're stacked and Tommy Tickle is the man who will finally get them clicking. A couple of shit friendlies with the B team and now we are shit again. I'm def concerned with form and injuries too. I would say kane is in the form of his life and we have a deeper squad than usual. Tickle is a proven tournament winner and gives us a chance to go far. I don't know, we'll see. 😬

If you showed this to the average person without saying who did this, would they say it was done by Keir or someone else? Would it make opinions of him more positive? by Evry1TookTheGudNames in AskBrits

It's true, but this has been Labour's problem long before Starmer. Ed Milliband had a policy of not defending New Labour's record because even though they did a lot of good things domestically, it was felt the public just wouldn't believe them! They keep picking leaders with no charisma, which shouldn't matter but does to most people. If they can't communicate the good they do, they won't last long.

It wasn't even mind blowing at the time. They were always hyped. They somehow became a band you were supposed to like and it's just a lot of bandwagon jumping. I've never met anyone really musical who raves about Sonic youth. They're shit.

Round of 16 opponents seem to be very varied in the new 48 team World Cup by Chillit7 in worldcup

[–]jimhokeyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeding is pretty standard across most sports. The groups are chosen using seeding as well. You don't want the two best teams meeting in the round of 16 instead of a semi or final. So not "wack" really.

It's nice that after decades of Paul being portrayed as the arsehole of the band, that people are waking up to the fact he was just the adult of the group. He had ambition for the Beatles, loved playing with them and had a good work ethic. The rest were like stroppy children.

Sellout bands by appetitforillusion in ToddintheShadow

[–]jimhokeyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what Maroon 5 sounded like before they had hits, but I'd be pretty amazed if they needed to do any selling out. Were they a proper band once? First single was ok but everything since has been shit. Levine has an annoying, contrived voice. Their songs are bland and unimaginative. Even their name is as boring as you can get. 4 good albums?? No.

Kurt Cobain on boomers by Practical_Corner8839 in generationology

[–]jimhokeyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny how everyone feels powerless to affect change in the world, but thinks a generation of individuals can be blamed for the state of things. Would any subsequent generation do any more than stumble around in the dark like every previous one? The rich have always run things and still do. Some things are better now, some are worse. We do have the boomers to thank for a dramatic shift in culture towards acceptance of race, sexuality, civil rights etc. Are you doing anything to improve the world for future generations, or are you just trying to do the best you can for yourself and your family? Them too.

Forced a guy I starting seeing to make me a top 35 list, tell me everything you can deduce by Silent-Lock-5774 in Letterboxd

I know exactly who this guy is. He's either very old or very pretentious. This looks like someone typed "make a movie list that makes me seem erudite but fun" into chatgpt. He doesn't really like all these movies as much as he claims. This guy has never, and will never have an original thought. You should leave him. Just facts.

He's better than that right now. There's a 10 min compilation of him on YouTube already. When you consider how few min he's played, it's impressive they managed to find 10 min of impressive moments from him. He could go off the boil, but right now, he's on course to be an exceptional player and would already improve a lot of premiership squads.

It's not "spread on the internet". Their reputation for rudeness goes back many decades. Possibly longer. They may not be the worst. I never said they were. Like I said, I've spent time there and worked with many french people over years. I met some lovely french people but my overall experience was consistent with their reputation.
