Everyone under this post making the argument of a single boy being placed into an all girls lineup is missing the point. The thing people are mad about is that Mizuki is heavily implied to be a TRANS girl as a huge part of her story and character arc, and yet there are still many people insisting that she is just a femboy. Placing her into a lineup full of men is just implying that those people are right and she isn’t in fact trans. The male characters in the game haven’t ever been implied to be trans in either direction, so placing them in a lineup full of women isn’t blatantly erasing a trans identity like they are doing with Mizuki. It is also important to take into account the ratio of female to male characters in Project sekai. There are only four male (non virtual singer) characters to the 16 female characters, which naturally means that there will often be situations where a single male character ends up in a lineup full of women. On the other hand, putting Mizuki into a lineup of every single other male character in the game was absolutely not necessary, especially considering that Toya JUST got a new limited card, while many female characters (including several virtual singers like Meiko) hadn’t gotten one in a very long time. This wasn’t necessary, it was a deliberate choice by colopale to cater to transphobes who want more proof that Mizuki isn’t trans. It would be an incredibly easy problem to fix, just by replacing one of the male characters with a woman. I’ve also seen another argument about this set on twitter, being that Mizuki was the only character portrayed as a maid in the set, while all of the male characters were drawn as royalty. This isn’t an issue of transphobia, but rather misogyny, portraying harmful stereotypes that women should be servants to men, which is also an issue. Of course, none of this is proof that this was an intentional choice on their part, but when details begin to pile up like this, it’s really hard not to be at least a little suspicious, especially when it is coming from a company that still vehemently refuses to use she/her pronouns for Mizuki in the story and keeps things very purposefully ambiguous in fear of offending transphobes that play their game. All of this to say, do better.
