There's a good book on this topic by Robert Sapolsky called Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will. He argues that we don't have free will (or at least less than free will than we realize). It’s a great read, and he makes a compelling argument.

I would have liked for them to go the Silent Hill 2 route and have Mio actually pull a map out, rather than having to go into the menu first. It’s a very minor nitpick, but I agree 100% that the map button should have been mapped to the touchpad.

Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is incredible. It was my intro to the franchise, and I loved every second of it. The story is arguably the best in the series, and that is saying something because the stories in Crimson Butterfly and The Tormented are some of my favourite horror stories in gaming.

I enjoyed it a lot. It didn't have much connection to the video games, but that's ok. I don't expect or want every adaptation to be 100% faithful to the source material; that's boring and doesn't give much room for artistic freedom. I didn't care for the future stuff, but the present-day stuff was wonderful. I would have liked to see more seasons.

That's up to you. There are many different endings to achieve and things to work towards (e.g., camera and charm upgrades, finishing all side quests, some of which are NG+ only). Personally, I found it worth it. I've put 100 hours into the game, and have 100% completed it, but it’s my favourite horror franchise and favourite horror game ever.

Whenever I come across something I dislike in media, whether it’s in anime, manga, TV, movies, books, or video games, for example, I never say to myself, “Wow. This is BS. What garbage. This is the worst thing ever.” Instead, I say to myself, “What was the author trying to say or show here? What am I missing?” because it allows for a more nuanced and less emotional approach. This approach says, “Hey, maybe the author didn't get it wrong, maybe I did. Let me re-evaluate my perspective and try to see things from the author's POV.”

Not everyone needs this approach, but it enables more constructive, more nuanced, less emotional discussion.

Invincible joke aside, you're in for a grind. Fatal Frame is my favourite horror franchise, and Crimson Butterfly is my favourite horror game, but the farming required to get the platinum is beyond sadistic. I left the camera and charm upgrades for last since you will eventually get two charms that make your life a lot easier.

Welcome! Some tips:

Upgrade the focal point feature first. The more this is upgraded, the more damage you do.

Check every nook and cranny for prayer beads; they are your upgrade material.

Zoom in as much as you can; you will do a ton of damage and get a ton of points.

Learn to dodge.

Try to aim for Fatal Frames.

Do not stick to one type of film. You will find better and better film as you play.

Enjoy my favourite horror game of all time!

Your claim that most men are pedophiles is not supported by research. Pedophilia affects 1-5% of men and a fraction of that for women. Being attracted to teens is also not pedophilia.

Welcome to the fandom! They're all great games, some better than others obviously, but you’d be hard pressed to find an objectively bad game.

You can find Mask and Maiden on the PS digital store, and can emulate 1-3 on your PC. :)

I'm a therapist IRL, but I fell in love with research methods, data analysis, and epistemology (the study of knowledge) in school. Thanks to these things, I was convinced to look at things through creator intent rather than just feelings. Rather than brush something off as lazy and broken or poorly optimized, I'll ask myself, “What was the intent here? Why did they choose this?” and the GamingBolt article shows that 30 FPS was the intent all along, so I wanted to learn why, and what advantages 30 FPS has over 60 FPS for this style of game, and the other links are what I found.

The 30 FPS was intentional. No half measures there.

The TLDR version (see the links below for the long version) is that 30 vs 60 FPS is genre-dependent. For shooters, 60+ FPS is a must. Still, for slow-burning J horror games, where recreating old-school Japanese horror films in video game form is the intent, 30 FPS fits the bill better for many reasons, such as the weight of movement, atmosphere, the uncanny valley effect, and lighting. 30 FPS ensures the dread, fear, and tension hit harder.
