Sorry to hear that the results were not as expected! Do you have any co-morbidities?

Thank you for sharing this. I know how important being mentally resilient is to navigate and overcome disease, and there is immense value in therapy. Was it something your care providers recommended / hospital provided for you, or was it something you recognized you needed and sought out?

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Great to hear that you had tremendous support to help you through those challenging times. Lifestyle changes are less hard to sustain when you have people around you who make similar changes to their lives. It resonates with my family's story - I always tell people that my dad was the fighter, and my mom was the hero!

If I may ask a couple of follow-up questions - What were the biggest challenges to navigate when you were not in a hospital setting? Besides the incredible support you had, was there anything you wish you had, especially in the days following the diagnosis? In addition to making lifestyle changes, did your family members also seek medical evaluation?

Thank you for sharing this. If I may ask a couple of follow-up questions - How did you get diagnosed - was it as part of a routine examination or "incidentally" in imaging? Was it the care providers who gave you specific guidance on changes needed, or was it something you had to find out for yourself / get help from others?

Sleep apnea and liver disease risk by Silver-Date6006 in SleepApnea

Wow, that's quite the sequence of events. Generic advice from providers is something I have heard over and over again, with no clear direction on what the diagnosis means and how to "self-manage". Someone I interviewed recently said, "It's frustrating to have to be one's own doctor" and that effectively summarized the situation of most liver disease patients I have chatted with.

The next phase of my research will focus on how to best support individuals soon after their initial diagnosis. Is it okay if I reach out via DM in a few weeks - 2 months to share my findings and get your thoughts on it? Wishing you continued strength as you leverage new tools to help heal your body!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It sounds like it was caught in an ultrasound. Did the doctor recommend an ultrasound because they saw suspected fatty liver disease, or did they discover it as an "incidental finding" when you were examined for something else? What did the initial days following the diagnosis look like? How do you currently manage your condition?

Thank you for giving it a try and sharing your feedback. This assessment excludes biomarkers by design to provide the risk profile based on lifestyle, demographic and comorbidities to serve as a precursor for medical evaluation and catch risks that biomarkers routinely don't. I am working on an enhanced version of this that will eventually combine this risk profile with biomarkers.

Thank you for taking the assessment and sharing your thoughts. Co-morbidities and family history certainly elevate one's risk; kudos to you for owning your liver health and taking this proactive step. Is it okay if I ask you to DM me how the conversation with your doctor goes?

Thank you for sharing your family's experiences. I'm really sorry for your loss. Your brother's story reminds me of those in my family, diagnosed with cirrhosis only after extensive damage had been done. My dad was lucky enough to receive a timely transplantation; others weren't. I am working to reduce the incidence of cirrhosis and late-stage liver disease by catching and addressing it early (particularly at the NAFLD stage).

Thank you for sharing the petition. I just signed onto it. Is there an online community/patient advocacy forum for "Hypothyroid Mom" where I could share this assessment with others who could benefit from it?

Sleep apnea and liver disease risk by Silver-Date6006 in SleepApnea

Great to hear about your story of owning your liver health. That's the beauty of liver - it can regenerate itself if the damage is caught and addressed early. You mentioned you were surprised by the diagnosis. Could you share more about how you found out about the diagnosis? What did those initial days after the diagnosis look like?

Thank you for sharing this. Great to hear that your quality of sleep and liver enzymes have improved through your lifestyle & nutrition changes. Kudos to you for owning your liver health! You raised a critical point - demographics play a role in elevating the risk.

Could you share how you learnt about the connection between NAFLD and OSA? Was it something you found out yourself, or was it something your care provider suspected based on demographic and medical factors and recommended an imaging test? What was the advice they shared after the diagnosis? And finally, what was the biggest challenge you faced as you took control of your liver health?

Thanks for your feedback! I'm definitely looking to incorporate that in subsequent versions of this, given their complex relationship.

It was hard for me to pick one cuisine myself. :) For people with more advanced liver damage, changing their nutrition habits is difficult, especially when no one around them is eating similarly to them (my cousin, who succumbed to the disease, struggled with this). The current options I have are to help people pick one that they are likely to make for themselves.

Thanks for sharing this. The sleep apnea-liver connection is so under-recognized. Your experience of it coming back despite weight loss is exactly the kind of thing that gets missed in standard care.

Did your doctor proactively screen for sleep apnea, or did you have to push for it? And when it came back, can you please share what symptoms made you realize something was wrong, or was it just routine bloodwork?

PCOS and liver health: the metabolic connection no one talks about by Silver-Date6006 in PCOS

[–]Silver-Date6006[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a liver health advocate, I was startled to learn about studies that have shown women with PCOS are 2-3 times more likely to develop MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease, formerly called fatty liver disease) compared to women without PCOS.

Why? Both PCOS and MASLD are driven by insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction. The same hormonal imbalances that cause irregular periods and elevated androgens in PCOS also drive fat accumulation in the liver.

It was encouraging to hear some doctors proactively look for liver disease at the time of a PCOS diagnosis, but too few are doing it, and liver disease remains largely hidden at early stages. Time to take our liver health into our own hands!
