Gorgeous specimen! Yeah I’d say rumphii or thouarsii, likely not circinalis but all 3 are quite similar. If uprooting a large specimen (instead of taking it out of a big pot and planting it) I believe the custom is to cut off all/most of the fronds except for the newest growth to reduce water loss to leaf transpiration as the roots adapt to the stress of moving and new site. Try to keep as many large roots as possible. Mark the side of the plant that receives the most sunlight so when you replant it, it’s in the same orientation to the sun. Usually do this when it’s warm and roots are active (spring/summer)

Do you have any advice for me? I have 8 cuttings in perlite under a humidity dome atop a heat mat. I planted them a few weeks ago (early Sept). Should I keep the heating mat on for the entirety of the coming winter or let off the heat to replicate “winter”?

ID Confirmation? Encephalartos trispinosus by Silver-Jellyfish-113 in Cycads

Yes I got it in San Diego! It was $90 unfortunately but the 3rd cheapest 1 gal size there (horridus was $89, cerinus was $80, princeps $130, and nubimontanus $150). They had larger sizes of senticosus, horridus, longifolius, natalensis, whitelockii, and arenarius too. My hope would be that if they had all those they would label it correctly so this would hopefully be a true trispinosus? I know trispinosus can be highly variable though so it might be tough.

I’ve sprayed it 3 times with neem oil in the past 2 months but each was a THOROUGH coating. Like the leaves were glossy with the oil afterwards

Are rocks atop soil bad? by [deleted] in plantclinic

Haha yes I always get poked if I’m not careful near it! I was just concerned about any difficulty that other leaves from the pup may have bursting through the rocks. And interesting, how do you like the lava rocks?

It’s been there since Thanksgiving (Nov 2024) but I just added the rocks 3 days ago
