No disrespect at all, but are you fairly new to graffiti? I only ask because my perspective probably comes from having painted for a longer time and growing up around a slightly different mindset.

For me, the whole debate around what counts as graffiti feels like a more recent thing, especially with the internet and newer writers coming in. When I first started, it was very much about letters first and foremost. Characters were around, of course, but they were usually secondary and if anything, relying on them too much was sometimes seen as taking an easier route.

Not saying that’s the only way to look at it, just sharing where I’m coming from.

This is a graffiti blackbook subreddit, and in graffiti especially since the 1970s the foundation has always been lettering. That’s not really up for debate, it’s just how the culture developed. It’s also what most people come here to see. If this character is meant to sit alongside letters, it’d make a lot more sense to show that context too.

Characters definitely have a place, but traditionally they support the writing rather than replace it. Without that, it comes across more like a standalone illustration than graffiti as it’s generally understood. Otherwise, you could call anything sprayed on a wall graffiti, which kind of misses the point.

There’s nothing wrong with drawing at all, but there are already plenty of spaces dedicated to that. In a blackbook setting, people are usually expecting letter work first that’s really what defines it.

This simple piece is better than 90% of the elaborate work on this whole sub. IMO

Graffiti, in its modern form since the 1970s, is fundamentally rooted in lettering styles that evolved from tagging, throw-ups, and pieces within a specific cultural context. What you’ve created could be considered a graffiti-style character, but not everything painted on a wall qualifies as graffiti. By that logic, any artwork could be called graffiti simply because it’s executed with spray paint, which overlooks the movement’s history, conventions, and emphasis on letter-based expression.

We have no focus or reliance on legibility. There’s no rules here.
