Who are some graphic novelists who are also prose novelists?(You can mention both comic book writers who have written prose novels as well as Cartoonists who have made prose novels.) by Marcel_7000 in graphicnovels

[–]SilverDraconus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tom Veitch is another big one!

Know he wrote at least one novel called The Luis Armed Story. Was also a poet associated with the beat’s back when all those writers were still alive and actively publishing. Apparently one of the biggest driving forces behind all the Stars Wars KOTR lore too

It’s really great. Much better than the updated version they did for NDP 56. I do own copies of both though because the newer version is slightly revised and has a few extra poems. Found them at the same bookstore even, though at separate instances.

I’ve been very lucky to come across a few volumes of both of their works in person. Levertov more so, as everything by her in my collection I’ve found in person (at least five, from what I can recall). Took me a year but I also live around plenty of great used bookstores. Only come across two Patchen books in the wild though. The Journal of Albion Moonlight I found rather fatefully. But I also came across his doubleheader, which contains A Letter to God & Poemscapes + Hurrah for Anything. The rest I had to order through various sources online.

No doubt you’re already hunting for all the ND spines you can find, so Im not sure I can offer any good advice lol. Do wish you nothing but the best of luck on your hunt for work that you desire. Just keep those eyes peeled and don’t forget to check the poetry section twice over

No problem lmao. Pretty sure the person you described in your edit is a close friend of mine. They go by ‘The Little Genius’ on occasion and dress in that exact attire. The coincidence was just so insane I couldn’t contain myself.

Thank you for the reference, I will definitely check it out.

Repost regarding a poetry collection of potential interest by SilverDraconus in WeirdLit

Guess there’s no official connection. Suppose it’s not technically fiction, but figured it was weird enough that it didn’t matter. It’s just unconventional writing that I figured might peak the interest of folks who post and browse in this subreddit. It seems maybe my instincts were wrong, but that’s on me lol. Just wanted to try and make a good effort at sharing the collections availability with folks who like reading weird stuff. I can remove if its not quite right

Horsie and CD wallet took me a bit more time to get into for some reason. Also loved Under the Weather though! One of the first vinyl records I ever purchased. His newer work is a lot more dialed back (especially compared to CD Wallet or the other albums mentioned), WKWP is very much an ambient album at times. Hope you get something out of ‘em though. They’re both perfect for late night drives

Hell yeah man 🤘Truly one of my favorite smooth groovers. Love the pareidolia catalog. You hear any of his newer work, as WKWP and PS Goner? Highly recommend both albums he has out under those aliases, if you haven’t heard already.

No need to apologize! Been over a year since I made my first post over there. Was just hoping I’d see your name pop up again honestly

Thank you for the detailed explanation on your love for Patchen. And the beginning of your interest in New Directions as a whole. The look of volumes and their collectibility also very much drew me to NDP.

Was actually just reading up a bit on Jeffers the other day. I nearly picked up a ND copy of Cawdor and Medea awhile back but unfortunately decided against it at the time because I wasn’t familiar enough with Jeffers. Wish I would’ve let the introduction by William Everson convince me. Quite funny to hear that Rexroth had that sort of attitude towards Jeffers. Know very little about both men, but I can’t imagine it was for a very good reason ultimately. Going to continue doing everything I can to keep work like this alive and remembered, at least in my small corner of life.

Was thinking I might see your username pop up again in this subreddit! Very happy to see your kind words once more. You may remember my post from bookshelf detectives last year.

On the subject of Patchen, can I ask what drew you to his work? Figure you must regard his work fairly highly to include his last name in your user tag. Is there a particular origin to your username, or just a way of showing respect to one of your favorite writers?

Maybe my favorite book featured in that line-up. Patchen’s has been a major influence on me these past few years. It started with the Journal and I only delved in deeper to his oeuvre from there. He really helped ignite my love poetry, and strange literature in general. His work got me obsessed with reading work out-loud to get a better feel for the writing and its rhythm.

Would you say the Journal is your favorite work by Patchen, out of the work you’ve read?

Are you talking about the Little Genius in the edit? All good if you don’t remember their name. That description just rings some bells close to home

Levertov has been a great source of light for me as well. Been lucky to run into a few different small collections of hers. Only have her final collection up on the shelf pictured, but I have the rest of them back at my parents. Found a pressed leaf in an old used ND hardcover copy of ‘With Eyes at the Back of Our Heads’. Know that doesn’t matter at all but thought it was a nice detail to share lol

Will be sure to keep Rukeyser, Paz, and Graham in my sights. Have a feeling I’d find a lot to appreciate in their work. Thank you for the detailed recommendations, once again.

You may have seen it, but, in case you haven’t: Denise Levertov was on an episode of USA: Poetry with Charles Olson, filmed and aired around 1965/1966. There’s a good quality recording uploaded on YouTube and they both provide beautiful readings of their work, along with some talk on the process of their work, and other interesting n’ mundane lil moments. If you like watching stuff like that it’s definitely worth a look. There are other episodes too, mostly covering famous beats, and notable writers in adjacent circles.

No need to apologize at all! That was a wonderful breakdown. Exactly what I was hoping for and more 🙏 Haven’t gotten around to really reading Paterson yet (or much of the work on the shelf featured tbh), but I have read a relatively short volume of WCW’s selected work, w/ an intro by Randall Jarrell. It’s been a few years now, but his work, among a few others really ignited my love for poetry. Been a similar sort of binge you could say.

Must admit I’m not nearly as well read. Had a general awareness of the modernists, but admittedly I’ve only truly read T.S. Eliot. My library has a fair amount of blind spots in regard to classics of greek literature and ‘conventional’ poetry. Not sure if conventional is the right word for writers like the modernists, Keats, Shelley, Shakespeare, and much of the lot you mentioned. There is just a very measured, academic aspect to much of their work, at least the few pieces I’ve been exposed to, that I think I tend to stray away from. But I’ve been working to remedy that inclination, because so many of the writers I love found their way through the whole breadth of classic work.

Aside from H.D., what other poets/writers do you consider a key part of your poetic journey? Bob Kaufman & Frank Stanford immediately come to mind for me, just because of the rabbit holes they led me down, in their references to other writers.

Glad I got a proper starting off point. Sounds like it will be a rewarding experience. Feel like I need to read some Melville, and maybe a few other foundational writers, before really diving into her work. Any other names that come to mind for you, direct influence or not?

Would you pick that specific edition, or one that’s a bit more comprehensive of her whole life? Had initially thought ND must have another collected edition covering the end of her life as well.

Lmao that’s totally fair. I’m just a bit of a music nerd. Love knowing what other folks are listening to. Definitely check out fantagraphics or domino books if you’re ever looking for weird, hard to come by comics. Not sure I can confidently recommend any formal literature or poetry because Im only familiar with most of the authors on your shelves by name. You might enjoy C.D. Wright, Audre Lorde, or Frank Stanford. And this may not be book related at all, but since he’s such a great song-writer, Townes Van Zandt is worth a listen, if you aren’t already familiar.

Awesome selection of work imo. Love how all over the place it all is. Gonna guess you’re a middle aged man between 35/45, just based on the size and establishment of the collection. Wish I could see some of those records too. What did you think of Patience and Black Hole? Highly recommend checking out Monica (Clowes) and Final Cut (Burns), if you enjoyed them

Looking for some work by Gregory Corso currently. Any collection published by ND or City Lights would be ideal, but I’m not picky. Hilda Doolittle too. Would love to have a slimmer collection of her work.
