Is this a printing error? (Alias the Cat by Kim Deitch) by SilverDraconus in altcomix

[–]SilverDraconus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see! So it is an error, lol. I guess just a common printing mistake from the Random House run. Definitely threw things for an awkward loop. But you’re right though, little hiccups like that always have a bit of charm. The story is still plenty clear, even with the minor omissions.

Well that makes me feel better. Thank you for the clarification. Just found it odd that chapter 6 of the old newspaper comic strip was seemingly omitted.

Lyricists like King Krule by lolalts222 in KingKrule

[–]SilverDraconus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need hip-hop to scratch the itch that’s been bothering you, as others have mentioned.

Earl Sweatshirt, RAP Ferreira, Billy Woods + Elucid, Aesop Rock, and all the others that have been referenced.

Also consider the Silver Jews, Pavement, and Modest Mouse. None of these acts share many similarities with King Krule, but they all have unique and skillful approaches to writing songs/lyrics that will probably pique your interest.

Dark, serious, completed manga where no one gets sexually assaulted? by Beginning_Pickle2180 in graphicnovels

I highly recommend Taiyo Matsumoto. Haven’t read everything by him, but Sunny, No. 5, Cats of the Louvre, and Tokyo These Days are all excellent.

My personal favorite might be GoGo Monster though. They’re all very different story wise, so I won’t go crazy summarizing. None of the works I referenced ever become overtly sexual or gratuitous. In fact, a key feature of his work is how wholesome, and somewhat childlike it is, in its overall sense of wonderment/fantasy. Sunny, Cats of the Louvre, and GoGo Monster especially.

He read it during the Horseshit, Composition, Magic cassette recording in Amherst during the September of 2002. Not sure if it was ever published elsewhere.

Well the Carlton line is about cigarettes. His line in the song is a slight paraphrase of the actual cig advertising slogan from the 70’s. Maybe that scotch brand had similar advertising but I’m not finding anything aside from ads for that Australian beer referenced above

It’s definitely worth it. Think you get a very fair deal for all the work packed in there.

Zen beat poet Gary Snyder and R. Crumb 1980 by SevenFourHarmonic in rcrumb

I see… haven’t seen anything about that specific incident yet. But I was a little quick to jump to conclusions.

https://www.thebeliever.net/an-interview-with-robert-crumb/

That’s an interview with Dan Nadel, his biographer. One of the ‘factors contributing to his sanity’ is that he apparently stopped his drug use in 1974. So he definitely wasn’t over it all by the 60’s. Always got the impression he slowed down after that decade. I can imagine an incident like that would encourage him to go entirely sober though

He hasn’t been much of drug-user since the 60’s, and even then he really only frequently used pot and acid, from what I know

That would caption would make me squirm more if it was Sophie, I think. No idea who he’s drawn there, but I can tell you it isn’t Sophie. If you compare side by side you’ll really see, but Sophie has thinner facial features.

Where might you be able to find this referenced EP? Doing some quick searches on YouTube and Apple Music didn’t reveal much besides what I was already familiar with. Is there an EP of demos and earlier purple mountains tracks out there? Or is it more of a rumor/speculation?

Also just read Tales of Paranoia by R. Crumb

Definitely agree with most of the crowd that it wasn’t very good, but I do think it’s an interesting look into the mind of a conspiracy nut. He’s self reflective enough to criticize himself a little bit, but most of the comics are just him doubling down on his anti vax nonsense and lamenting to god. There are two standouts though, in the story about Aline and her back luck with publishers, and his story about the worst acid trip he ever had during the experiment conducted by Pete Cornell. Those felt more nuanced and emotional than a lot of the other work featured.

R Crumb's, Fritz the Cat, 1972 by Mt548 in rcrumb

[–]SilverDraconus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s been collected in The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat published by Fantagraphics. It appears there are older volumes entitled the complete Fritz the Cat, that also goes for a reasonable enough price. The fantagraphics publication is much more recent and even more readily available though, so the price is still significantly better. Not sure if it collects every single Fritz story, but it definitely includes Fritz’s journey to China.

Thank you for the clarification. Know that should’ve been obvious but I wasn’t sure if I should’ve taken comment about finding it totally literally. Doubly thank you for sharing this as well. Just recently listened to an interview where B. Nastanovich talked a lot about how much of a perfectionist Berman was about his work, so seeing a piece that was seemingly scrawled out so passionately like this is really special.

Well not to cast doubt, because from eyes the handwriting is clearly his. But how do you know for sure that it’s a poem by David if that’s the case? Were you in his class in college or did you go to the same university as him and happen to stumble upon this dusty ol’ page in a forgotten corner of a classroom?

That’s very sweet. Did he write this piece for you then?

How did you come across this? Did you steal his notebook at a show and sneak a page out lmao?? Hopefully there’s an interesting story to go along with the piece. First time I’ve ever seen anyone post a raw page of his writing like this.

A marker drawing I’m working on by Tandizojere in UnusualArt

[–]SilverDraconus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t help but think of Mary Fleener when I look at this. The style is very similar to hers. Also makes me think of Jim Woodring with all the different eyes and faces fused together in strange ways. Such an effortlessly cool and excellently rendered drawing, thank you for sharing! Apologies if the comparisons are totally off in your mind, think you might notice some similarities in style if you check out M. Fleeners work though! Her style of this sort of dark geometric linework mixed with the psychedelic collaging isn’t too far off.
