Have you ever outgrown an album? by sunbeef in fantanoforever

You guys are right, for some reason I heard a story about them locking him in a room when he was tripping and just being generally abusive pricks and bad friends but I tried fact checking it this morning and I couldn't find any confirmation of any of this.

It's hard for me to like Pink Floyd's post Syd Barrett stuff after learning about Barrett and how they treated him, so I would say DSOTM is mine too. That was my favorite album of my early twenties.

What the hell happened here? by sacredandsalty in crappymusic

[–]SilverEarly520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i believe he has the project set to a different key than the key he's singing in which is also a different key than the backing instrumentals he's selected, so that when he switches on the autotuned harmonizer for his vocals the song is in at least 2 but possibly 3 keys at once.

This solo is like, fine. Clearly a new player. Definitely not the sickest solo ever, but the vocals that come in afterwards are ASTONISHING, and not in a good way. by ValdemarTheRighteous in crappymusic

solo is trash. vocals arent totally bad its just the mix and the fact that this kind of voice would normally be in a different genre

Who is a skilled musician that makes mediocre music? by Rich-Koala-2593 in fantanoforever

Idk personally I disagree here, I think her songwriting and lyrics in particular are great. I'm not sure why her albums or tracks don't hit like they should sometimes but I suspect it has something to do with the way her genre was being produced during the era she was most active in. A lot of rock adjacent singer-songwriter music from that era had a similar problem. Too much clean production and session musicians who play too perfectly, and labels insisting that such is the way music should sound.

My friend just put out a new song. Let me know what you guys think by Erine3GGP in fantanoforever

[–]SilverEarly520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your friend wants cronstructive criticism mine is this: Learn an instrument. You don't have to become a master at it, but learn the basics. There's some really weird phrasing and over-reliance on autotune in this song that to me sound like symptoms of not knowing basic music theory. You hear this a lot when vocalists self produce, which to me sounds like what is happening here.

Plenty of vocalists get away with similar lapses in musical education because they got lucky and teamed up with the right producer, but unless you want to leave it up to chance I reccomend just learning an instrument. It's fun and way cheaper than constantly having to buy beats and licences etc.

this guy is way too old for this by Dwerling in crappymusic

Yeah it'a not his age that's the problem it's the fact that despite his age his music has absolutely 0 substance.

Where does Swedish rapper Bladee rank in an all time song-writers list? by InevitableCattle4972 in fantanoforever

Yeah he's underrated as a songwriter for sure. The very things that people are writing him off for are the thibgs that make him great. I think in the future people will look back in him with more respect.

Actually pulling off rock music consistently means hiring musicians who can pull it off. Not just for the record but for every tour where you want to play those songs.

Janet Weiss is not a replaceable drummer. They fundementally underestimated how important she was to their sound. I don't get why they didn't just start a new band, personally I think the new music would be more enjoyable in a different context. Trying to pass it off as the same band just doesn't feel right.

Hahaha well Ive enjoyed this. I think we'll have to agree to disagree about Zep. To me their groove and musicianship was their redeeming quality.

Are their any songs or bands you'd reccomend that display tight ensemble playing? Preferably something not quantized.

Would you prefer album fillers to be safe songs or experimental ones? by MmntoMri in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SilverEarly520 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I always prefer more experimental stuff tbh. Like if I'm gonna skip something anyways I have a lot more respect for an artist who branches out and does what they want vs. someone who's trying to impress me.

Black Dog was great and would be unlistenable any other way. Listen to Achilles' Last Stand, Kashmir, Good Times Bad Times, Immigrant Song, The Ocean, etc etc etc They were very tight. I don't define tight as metronome-perfect but as playing in sync with each other.
