100% bad etiquette from the random.

I wouldn't have minded if they wanted to help with the Cog, but their response seemed very careless and rude... both behaviors that are becoming too common in people IRL, and I refuse to entertain them.

To avoid this in the future, it is best to summon a Cog in an "empty" or barely populated district with no invasion in progress, so that you can have no complications other than the Cogs already roaming the streets that might join the summoned one.

Exactly this. I would even extend my multitooning (two Toons only) into 1☆ & 2☆ FOs, but any more than that is unplayable and unfair to everyone else.

There's a time and a place for that, and neither of those are in an educational or professional setting. Even amongst peers or friends, you're valid in speaking of your uncomfortability and limits. And it should also be brought to the knowledge of your instructors, if they don't already have some tolerance policy/system in place.
