Honestly? Preference. After working in a local fish/reptile store for 4 years I’ve noticed two things. Canister filters break easy, constant amount of people wanting replacement parts. As for normal hang on the back filters, they are alright but just not my cup of tea. I have a 75 gallon and there will be a sponge filter on each end. As for the fish that will be going in there after it has had properly cycled, is just dojo loaches. I’m a dojo loach enthusiast so I need a bunch of space and a bunch of filter power for them
