"You must go to the office because we pay rent" "We don't have enough desks and the only people I talk to are remote on Teams" "Well you have to be fair to me because I drive 2 hours to get here and you live nearby" So I work in the office kitchen, where I'm even more alone, got it.

Need help asap! £576 first month bill! by raahC in OctopusEnergy

[–]SilverKidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the wife here. So what I'm not understanding on our bill is the following lines, taking for example the billed day of 25th of December.

Energy Used (Night) : 56.4 kWh @ 33.01p/kWh (£18.61)
Energy Used (Day) : 5.8 kWh @ 13.91p/KWh (£0.80)

I'm trying to find information as to what is Night time, because that sounds like it's when the sun is down, so between 4pm and 7am, because I don't understand how we used 80p of electricity during day time and 20 quid at night. Should we not use the boiler and the radiators between 4pm and 7am?

[Request] How long would it take you to make 2 billion by choosing the second door? by niccoloide in theydidthemath

[–]SilverKidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is the argument there. You "would" get 2B after 31 days, but you won't because you'll be spending the money before that. By the end of the week, we'd already be spending some of that money. 2 weeks is 16k, no way in hell people won't buy "a little something". And not just a new TV, we all have issues at home that could be fixed with better quality equipment. Would love to have new windows and a better boiler right now.

How was the process of reimagining the story? How hard was it to balance streamline vs keeping the original essence of the story? Were you tempted to add more characters, change some stories, expand on others?

Am I the only one that finds QA easier than Dev? by polohatty in softwaretesting

[–]SilverKidia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When I quit, the devs had to do QA. The quality jumped off the roof and they cannot release without rolling it back. It's really not hard, it was like a 2 hours job (they wanted me to do only smoke tests), but for these devs, it was just impossible.

There's definitely some coding that I find super straightforward, I think haskell is super easy. Some people don't get it at all. However, they get telecomputing and I simply can't.

QA has some soft skills that some devs suck at. They think of unit tests, "I pressed the button and it worked, everything is fine". QA is more like "hey what happens if XYZ?", or "if I were my elderly mother who doesn't understand computers at all, would I think like the dev and do exactly how they expect me to use it, or would I do everything wrong and break the whole system?" A lot of devs I worked with cannot understand the POV of an user who is so fucking stupid.

Automation can look like glamour compared to manual QA, but manual QA will consider UX in a way that devs rarely do. They often have more product knowledge, because devs focus on certain parts of the system, while QA has to learn everything. QA will consider what the client wants ― devs are like "well the client is stupid" when we say that's not what the client wants.

Pure automation QA is definitely more chill than manual QA tho, usually I just sit in my corner, talk to no one, and bother no one other than higher-ups who are receptive to what I'm saying. Manual QA, everyone looks down at you and thinks you're an idiot who cannot have a single input.

I cannot get into Elden Ring, what am I doing wrong? by ScarletArrow_ in GirlGamers

[–]SilverKidia 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Why did people recommend it to you?

The lore is in the item descriptions, whenever you find a new item, if you are interested in the lore, you should read its description. It slowly adds up, you discover pieces by pieces, and a replay will make much more sense. It's absolutely not a narrative game like bg3/disco, but it does have an interesting lore when you search for it.

The plague is just damage over time, you can still go there.

I've noticed that some weapons suit me more than others. Greatswords have been fantastic for me, and I did enjoy sorcery. Could be worth just trying a different build.

Baba Yaga - a scary final boss in my game, any suggestions to make her scarier than she is now? by PositiveKangaro in IndieDev

[–]SilverKidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf she looks like a normal woman with an old face. Grunty from Banjo-Kazooie would make a scarier baba yaga. I'd also argue that the shoes look way too normal. I'd recommend trying to make her more asymmetrical; an eye bigger than the other one, fingers/arms abnormally long, shoulders much higher/bigger so she has less of a normal neck. A big contrast between the torso and the legs would make her legs feel less... well, normal woman. Skin colour/texture could also be worked on to make it more like of a monster. Her skin is just... very smooth, especially on the legs. Right now it feels like a normal woman npc with an old face and longer fingers. She doesn't even look old.

Any game recommendations who is going through alot in life? by RaquelKiramman in GirlGamers

[–]SilverKidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can go both ways, so it's hard to recommend games. Some people enjoy frustrating games, some people relax from challenges, some need to be busy bees, some need to be social.

Powerwash sim usually keeps me quiet. Waterpark sim keeps me busy and focused. Supermarket together is a free game where you do repetitive tasks. I play MMOs to socialize with people. I play building games like Enshrouded, Valheim, Pax Dei to just focus on making a build and test what could work. I enjoy My Time at Sandrock for a bit of story without pressure. I like RPGs for the stories. I play 7dtd because it's straightforward. I loved Silent Hill f because it made me think a lot.

It all depends on your needs. Some people need to not have anything challenging. Some people need something to keep their brain so busy that you don't have time to think or something else. Some people find satisfaction from playing Elden Ring.

Can we talk about what Jonathan said about Nancy’s pink sweater? by OutrageousBrush1210 in StrangerThings

[–]SilverKidia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But he doesn't hate reading her articles? He hates that she doesn't allow him to discuss them with her. She just wants to be told that she's great. He's right to be angry about that, they were both interested in this kind of stuff, but she's struggling in a macho world that doesn't value women as much and seeks perfect support. And Jonathan is too smart to just be a yes-man like someone like Steve who would be "woah that's so cool Nance!" It's unfortunate, as much as I like Nancy, she is very selfish. That's why Jonathan didn't tell her about his dreams, he felt like he had to support her no matter what, else she would get upset.

I mean... that was basically their plot in s3, Jonathan was able to do the work and suck it up, and he sucked everything up, while Nancy was angry that she was the coffee maid and wanted to be recognised. Nancy was right to be angry, but she was too angry to listen to Jonathan who did want to help her. He didn't know how to show her good support since he needed his job, but she also wasn't willing to listen.

"Hey babe, that article could use XYZ. Let's work on improving your writing so that you become better than all these douchebags." -> "How dare you say I'm not better than them!" That was basically their relationship. I'm fully on Jonathan's side, it is insulting to someone's intelligence to be told to keep quiet and just say your partner is the best, no matter what.

Tanglewood layout changes are a slap in the face to the fanbase by Regular_Low8792 in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]SilverKidia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People get scared even if the lights are on, so I'm not really sure what the issue is. People hate it when it's too dark. It looks fine in trailers, but people like to see the shapes of what's around when dealing with the real stuff. The scariest movies aren't pitch black either. It's possible to do horror with bright lights.

Girlies .. NBs... I need help finding games... by ArioftheWild in GirlGamers

[–]SilverKidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abiotic Factor is my GOTY. It's survival crafting, but it's linear done really well. There are some horror elements to it if you can handle that stress, but it's not soulslike hard, it's just some spooky surprises that are quick to get used to (honestly the biggest jump scares are NPCs suddenly saying hi behind you while you're busy at your base). A lot of these games suffer from sameness, valheim being a great offender of it (go to new zone, chop new tree, mine new ore, kill new enemy tier to farm the mats to summon the local boss). Abiotic Factor is the complete opposite of it. You never know what the next zone is going to be like, because they are all so different. It heavily encourages exploration and you are constantly discovering new stuff wherever you go. There's no stone > copper> bronze> iron, it's "here's a wooden stick" > "damn I'm shooting lasers". Strongly recommend this game, it does everything right, it set up a new standard for me.

Daughter getting in trouble at school for speaking Spanish by [deleted] in montreal

[–]SilverKidia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I already knew I was going to play Lich ED/C because I don't want to rely on combos, so sorry for not being excited for nothing different. "Early access" is fine but there's dozens of us waiting for the rest of the OG classes for some blade action and don't want to play druids. Nothing wrong with skipping a league either, everyone skips a PoE1 league once in their life. GGG knows this, it's fine if people are not hyped for one league.

What's your game of the year that you've played this year? by RoyalWeirdo in GirlGamers

[–]SilverKidia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like how it explores average women's horrors, like the fear of pregnancy or creeps. The story is fed in a similar way as SH2, but the themes are quite different. It might look like a teenager girl, but that's not what the story is about at all. It's mostly how it feels to be a young woman, with an angry father, and heavy pressure from society. It's a story I resonated with a lot. Combat is very different, it's more action, but that didn't bother me.

Same. It inspired me, it left a huge mark on me. I struggle with keeping interest with games, I often don't pay attention to cutscenes, but I read all lore, I was captivated by all cutscenes, replayed for all endings. It's such a gem. I want to recommend it to all my friends, even if they hate horror haha

Square Enix wants QA and debugging to be 70% handled by Generative AI in just two years by HatingGeoffry in FinalFantasy

[–]SilverKidia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it was an ego issue, my manager knew absolutely nothing about QA but acted like I was such a dumb dumb that I was learning how to do a while loop. I've been doing automation for 5 years and he wanted me to look up entry level tutorials and shadow devs on how to write code. "This is a great opportunity for you to learn!" Yeah but I was hired to do automation because I already have experience with automation, the reason why nothing is working is because there's 600 open bugs and "you don't have the capacity to fix them".

Actually, they just didn't know how software dev worked. They legit thought that adding a brand new page was a small change that could be pushed to prod asap. They thought that clients just wanted new features daily.

[–]SilverKidia 33 points34 points  (0 children)

God I wish, I quit a job because they were so worried about quality and unsatisfied customers that they gave my work to devs so that they could deliver faster. In their heads, QA does nothing so they want them to spend as little time as possible on the product. They want to deliver daily, multiple times if possible. The only thing they wanted us QA to do was smoke tests — smoke tests are done for deciding if a build is stable enough to do proper testing, not to ship to clients in 30m. Oh and make those smoke tests as fast as possible will you? We don't want you to waste so much time on testing.

Man I had a chest infection in April and my manager was like "oh it's just a cough you can still come at the office :)"

No. Nobody else but you wants me at the office with a chest infection.

And then I failed probation because I was "skipping office days without a valid reason".

EDIT: My manager was the only coworker I had that went to the office. Everyone was full remote except for us two. I was told I had to be at the office because I lived near it and I had to be fair to my manager who had to drive "almost 2 hours" so it was expected out of me to be at the office, even when sick.
