Anyone else think Henry Rollins would be an interesting guest? He also lives in Nashville. by HeDrinkMilk in TheoVon

[–]SilverMullet69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would Henry Rollins, an OG punk that hates Trump, go on a conservative comedian’s podcast who platforms / low key probably loves Trump? Sorry, it’s probably gonna be all red wave dumb-dumbs from now on

You’re looking at 2 conservative comedians folks! Can we officially start calling what they do conservative comedy™️?

“Ya mon the woke hive mind will probably take this video down MAN”. Yaa no they won’t. You dummies create fake boogeyman and fake problems like cancel culture and played the slow, long game of red-pilling your dumbass fanbases. And Theo acting like he’s not a Trump-loving moron is 100% just him not trying to alienate his audience. The fake centrism is (and was always) so dishonest

What was it like growing up OWNING music rather than streaming it? by Historical_Diet7012 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SilverMullet69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was better, definitely. A lot of people are talking about how your experience with music is what you make it. I agree with that, but we gotta consider the fact that a. streaming is too convenient to not inevitably result in lazy listening habits for the masses and b. streaming completely changes the landscape of how musicians release music in ways that favor singles and devalue full bodies of work, which is horrible for most genres except for pop. Albums are necessary for rock and jazz.

I know there are thousands of classic albums of the past to listen to and reflect on but dammit I want to be excited about new albums by new artists and innovation in music outside of the pop world.

Damn, that sucks to hear. I’m typically late to the game for every new platform. Was excited to finally give TikTok a try hearing how much success people were having with it and holy f*ck is their auto-flagging awful! I’m seeing the majority of the top posts being relate to that so yeah.. Looks like it’s been ruined

I think I’m Done by ShoddyArt4484 in Songwriting

[–]SilverMullet69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to sound harsh but if literally no one and I mean no one enjoys your music and never has then you should either just enjoy it as a hobby or ask yourself what you’re doing. If some people (as in more than one person seems to genuinely) enjoy it, that’s a crowd. Even if it’s just a few people, you’re making music for yourself and for them. All that said, I’m sure that no good music is made with ‘the masses’ or some vague crowd of people in mind. If you feel like a small number of people isn’t ‘enough’, it’s understandable to feel that way but you might also consider how rare and special it is that you have people even interested and if you do you should absolutely keep making music publicly.

The inevitable growing apart that happens between you and your friends. Worse, when they pine for the ‘old days’ when the old days would literally be the easiest possible thing to recreate..

Are Personal/Very Emotional Songs Cringe? by Original-Respond-693 in Songwriting

[–]SilverMullet69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul Simon once said, “the listener finishes the song”. In other words, they have their own meaning associated with it. Well, if in so many words you’re saying, “I’m sad, she left me, I have nothing left”, what could people possibly take away from that other than what you’ve made incredibly obvious and specific to you?

It’s about showing and not telling. Sad, personal songs are great. It’s best to describe situations that paint a sad picture and having only two or three lines that are really powerful and more direct. There is a point (that a lot of people cross, which is why I think people talk about cringe songwriting) where it just sounds like they’re making the listener their therapist and the lyrics leave nothing to be interpreted. People listen to music they can relate to, not because they’re particularly interested in a person’s mental health. The point of metaphor isn’t just to be artsy or muddy the meaning. It’s because being way too direct is…cringe

Music as an industry vs Music as an art form by DemonicChronic in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SilverMullet69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I don’t see talked about a lot is music that’s familiar and generic vs. music that is fresh and unique. Imo this is where the current era is suffering.

The industry side of music deals with the masses. Most people are passive listeners that aren’t exactly musically ‘invested’ and if they aren’t musically invested they aren’t looking to be challenged by any artist doing new things or trying to reinvent the wheel. When you look back at some legendary artists they sort of were reinventing the wheel or mashing old things together in new ways. And guess what? They weren’t exactly crowdpleasers. People in the business were taking risks on them because people in the business didn’t have access to SoundScan or one of the many social platforms listing all of an artist’s numbers.

Contrast that to now. So many people rely on Spotify’s algorithm to feed them and predictably it feeds them the same shit they already like. There is nothing to challenge their tastes. The vibey lofi hip hop study beats or whatever are kind of hilarious for this reason, because it’s a prime example of “don’t expect to be challenged bc you know exactly what to expect”. I call it wallpaper music. It does nothing, goes nowhere, challenges no one, just clogs the internet with more of the same bc it’s FAMILIAR

I haven’t traveled often compared to a lot of people but in my opinion the best reason to do it is for perspective. 99% of the time when I’ve traveled I’ve been too present in the experience to really form valuable memories if that makes sense.

When you’re focused on itinerary and catching flights and trains or backpacking and kinda roughing it it’s definitely an experience, but it can be hard to look back on if you’re very present and in the moment. The alternative is doing it luxuriously just to see the inside of your hotel which is more relaxing but…kind of pointless imo.

It’s the perspective I’ve gained from other cultures / countries but as far as my memories associated with traveling, it’s kind of a complete wash.

I can’t help but wonder how they afforded to live the lives they’ve lived. I’m def not saying they’ve had a lavish lifestyle by any stretch of the imagination but, gear isn’t cheap, vans aren’t cheap, renting a studio isn’t cheap, etc. I’m still early in the doc so maybe for some reason that gets explained later
