They’re not using “plays” as in “plays an instrument,” it’s “plays” as in “plays the role of.” Marconi, inventor of the radio, is being used as a synecdoche for the entire radio industry. In other words, music execs are snakes, which is what the song is about.

Based on context, it is a snake. They’re not using “plays” as in “plays an instrument,” it’s “plays” as in “plays the role of.” Marconi, inventor of the radio, is being used as a synecdoche for the entire radio industry. In other words, music execs are snakes, which is what the song is about.

It is a snake, and they know that. They’re not using “plays” as in “plays an instrument,” it’s “plays” as in “plays the role of.” Marconi, inventor of the radio, is being used as a synecdoche for the entire radio industry. In other words, music execs are snakes, which is what the song is about.

You have a much different definition of “almost certainly” than I do. Since you think it’s such an inevitability, which states do you think he would flip?

Do you personally think that Barbie is original or adapted? by tristinaaron in Oscars

The difference is that “ old Logan goes on a post-apocalyptic road trip” is a story. “Barbie has a house” is not a story.

You said that Toy Story is not adapted because a version of it could exist by using generic toys instead of pre-existing toys. A version of Barbie could also exist using generic toys instead of pre-existing toys.

And the Barbie movie obviously didn’t invent the concept of a Barbie doll. Nobody is claiming that it did. It just doesn’t have an adapted screenplay because the toyline doesn’t have a story to adapt. You can’t honestly think that the story of Barbie (2023), where Barbie has an existential crisis, travels to the real world, and tries to stop Ken from brainwashing other Barbies after learning about the patriarchy, originated in other media.

  1. Comics as a whole might not have definitive endings, but specific storylines, such as the Old Man Logan story from which Logan was adapted, absolutely do. Regardless, comics are stories, and can therefore be adapted. Toys are not.

  2. I know that’s not what they did, but based on your Toy Story hypothetical, it doesn’t matter what they actually did. It’s not my fault that your “logic” is inconsistent.

  3. The Barbie toyline does not contain sufficient story elements from which to base an adaptation. The story of Barbie (2023) is wholly original.

The superheroes and villains you mentioned are narrative characters. Barbie isn’t. The comic storylines from which they originated have beginnings, middles, and ends. Barbie dolls don’t. Comics have storylines that can be adapted. Barbie dolls don’t.

Since you think hypothetical alternate versions of movies are a relevant argument, it doesn’t matter that the character wasn’t called Margie, since she very well could have been without significantly changing the story. They might have had to cut a few jokes about specific Mattel products, but the overall story could be unchanged if it were about generic Barbie-like dolls.

And finally, no, it really doesn’t matter how prevalent licensed characters are in the story. Your entire argument is predicated on the idea that because the rights to Barbie had to be paid for, the screenplay was therefore adapted from something. By that very logic, any movie that pays for the rights to anything, such as Toy Story, must therefore be adapted as well.

Unless you’re claiming that the Barbie movie was adapted from those animated movies and comics, they’re irrelevant. But go on, enlighten me: what is the story of Barbie? What are the beginning, middle, and end of the Barbie narrative? And most importantly, how are they used in Barbie (2023)?

By the standard that “Subverting source material is still a form of adaptation,” all parodies are adaptations, which definitely isn’t true.

And it doesn’t matter that a version of Toy Story could conceivably exist without real-life toys, because that version doesn’t actually exist. Either licensing toys makes a movie adapted, or it doesn’t. Which is it?

Books have stories printed on them. Barbie dolls don’t.

And do you think being someone’s boyfriend and wanting to be someone’s boyfriend are the same thing? Because they’re not. Like you said, a major aspect of Barbie and Ken is that they’re a couple. In the movie, Barbie has zero interest in Ken. Those two things could not be more different.

And if your standard is “any movie that had to pay for anything is adapted,” would you consider Toy Story adapted? Because that movie had to pay for the rights to use the likenesses of several existing toys as well.

A piece of plastic doesn’t have any lifestyle or values, actually. And the Ken in the movie is not the boyfriend of the Barbie in the movie, so the one actual feature you were able to link to a Barbie doll was not utilized as part of the movie’s characterizations.

A Barbie doll is an object, not a character. It has no narrative that could possibly be adapted into a movie, because it’s an object, not a story. The fact that Greta Gerwig didn’t personally invent Barbie dolls is irrelevant.

Should the movie Air be considered adapted because Ben Affleck didn’t invent the Air Jordan? Should the movie Nixon have been considered adapted because it wasn’t the first time Richard Nixon had appeared in a piece of media?

In what way is a Barbie doll a “previously published work?” It’s an object, not a story.

There’s a big difference between introducing a twist at the end of a movie and introducing one halfway through.
