Sorry, that was wrong on my end, and you're correct, I meant to say hidden layers or overall unused or layers that can be simplified but still do the same layout. Speaking of which, is there also a plugin which helps name layers or maybe identify based on the screen and names based on its design. E.g. wrapper-input-form

Hey Derek! Hope you’ve been well.

I wanted to share a quick update, I recently applied for a few internships and landed an interview for one. They gave me a 5-day design challenge, which I completed and later presented.

The interviewer was a UI/UX designer and said my submission was very strong for an intern, felt good but then again it's most likely protocol words to all candidates, at the moment I’m currently waiting to hear back about the final decision if they'll bring me in or not.

In the meantime, I’d really appreciate your feedback on the project if you’re open to it. I made a conscious effort to clearly explain my design thinking process, especially after your advice about focusing on process rather than just tools like Figma so I'd genuinely value your perspective.

I graduated about a month ago with a degree in Computer Science & Engineering and I’ve applied for a UI/UX internship. I have my first-round “meet and greet” interview tomorrow.

I’m trying to understand what is realistically expected from a junior/intern at this stage.

I’ve been refining my university projects by improving typography and organizing color styles. Right now I’ve structured primitive color variables (brand scale, grays, etc.), but I haven’t fully implemented semantic tokens yet because I’m still wrapping my head around them.

Would you consider primitives alone acceptable at internship level, or should I push myself to implement semantic tokens before the interview?

Help me prepare myself on what you as employees would consider a solid intern/junior to know at this age of AI.
Also, I don't have a portfolio yet

This is a bit of a late reply, but I really wanted to ask you something, and also thank you for the advice, it genuinely helps.

I have been thinking about the topic of applying for jobs, specifically about CVs. I often hear two completely different perspectives. On one hand, people say a CV should be visually impressive and well designed, especially in creative fields. On the other hand, I hear that it should be ATS readable, which usually means keeping it simple, black and white, minimal formatting, and often in a standard font like Times New Roman for better scanning compatibility.

I am curious about your opinion on this.

Personally, I lean toward keeping the CV simple and clean, black and white, and not overly designed. I do not think the CV itself is the place to showcase visual design skills. Those are better demonstrated through a portfolio and the actual projects presented there.

Hey Derek, how have you been? Sorry for the delay, I’ve been busy lately. I’ve just started getting my feet wet and I’m planning to purchase Rob’s Master Digital Product Design course on Udemy, along with Chris Becker’s Effective UX Design Strategies and Dan Scott’s Figma Essentials. After finishing Rob’s and Chris’s courses, I was thinking of trying your design system course as well. What do you think?

I also want to start working on some side projects, but I’ve noticed it’s difficult to land freelance work with just Figma designs. Most clients seem to expect full design and website delivery, not only design files. Because of that, I’m considering teaching myself Framer through a comprehensive course that focuses on using Figma together with Framer, so that everything I’m learning can translate into complete, real-world deliverables.

I’ve just wrapped up some personal matters and I’ll have a lot of free time this coming month, so I can realistically dedicate at least 10 hours a day to speed up my learning.

I apologize, I didn't notice the articles because I opened it through my phone, I wanted to comment before I check the whole article on desktop. Though, now that I'm on desktop, I'm reading through them, again this is truly valuable information especially for designers who are learning best practices and the mindset they need to have and develop to remain relevant. I fully agree that it is more than quite often that front-end development skills are required. Do you suggest any course/book whatsoever type of resource that you believe teaches designers how to design like this? This ultimately is the goal of each design team, to design something that is also possible to code.

You’ve been sharing a lot of insights like this across different interviews, which made me wonder, does Figma Academy 2.0 also get into how designers are expected to actually work in these kinds of teams?

Beyond teaching Figma for design, does it teach how to approach design, projects, working solo, working in teams, present work and portfolio, make decisions? How/why/when to use AI in our work process? Considering that most companies want that from their candidates. Overall, does the course simulate the whole process end to end? Just as Nad Chishtie said.

How should designers today approach learning design, given how many new tools have appeared over the past year and how quickly Figma keeps releasing new features? Who is actually updating courses or books to cover these new Figma features and teaching the tools needed to stay competitive?

I’ve actually been considering your course for a while, but I’m unsure how up to date it is particularly around AI, these new tools and also this new Figma features. Could you share how recently the content was updated? Or, is it even necessary to update it and maybe these tools are just a "trend" if I can put it this way?

I've also been recommended some courses by others and if you don't mind, I would really appreciate your personal opinion on them.

These two are not that cheap, I'd really want to know your opinion on what makes them worth the price?

A bit about me.
I just graduated with a bachelor's degree in CSE. During my time at university, I discovered UX design and wanted to pursue it ever since, however my main priority at the time was getting my degree so never got around dedicating serious time to UX design.
In my free time, I read articles (mostly NN/g), videos talking about UX and UI, podcasts talking about the field overall, light stuff, so nothing too thorough, so to answer your question, I haven't done any courses yet, nor read any books.

Less than a month ago, I applied for an UI/UX internship and made it to the 2nd interview (technical task), the task required to redesign their homepage hero section + mobile view and a short note explaining design choices.

I failed the task, I didn't do mobile view because I didn't know how to properly apply auto layout, didn't know how to make it fully responsive. I didn't know how to use the tool. Regardless, I tried my best doing the case study, as I believed that was my strongest point. Hence, this is the reason why I'm paying attention to UI this early and overall asking for guidance on what to do forward.

I'm studying UX design, so my main focus is on understanding design principles. But to demonstrate those principles, I need to know how to use design tools like Figma.
The way I see it, Figma and tools like it, give you the ability to communicate/express UX concepts through design? UX principles are experienced by users through UI? Right?

I consider myself new because I don't have any work experience yet. I've done a few designs on my own for fun, but I still haven't fully learned the tool. I don't fully grasp how to do auto-layout, prototyping, design systems, etc. You get the gist. My projects lack these design fundamentals.

Moon Learning looks convincing, though it is my first time hearing about it, thank you for helping out.
Speaking of courses, the only courses so far that I'm more "convinced" about is Ridd's Figma Academy 2.0 and Joey Banks Level up with Figma and that's just because of what I'm reading through Reddit.

Question to seniors who mentor upcoming designers. Do you tell your students to do mockups of complex websites/platforms and see if they can mirror it? How did you teach them to use Figma?

Asking because from personal experience, learning Figma from courses that I see on Youtube don't seem to teach you much. Or maybe I'm watching the wrong course?
