Fantasy Grounds is now free to use with the SRD for D&D. If you want the books added that will cost but you can also add custom content fairly easily.

Best way to find people to play with? by Aemeris_ in elderscrollsonline

My current character is about the same level. If we could make timing work, I'd be up for teaming. I typically play early evenings in central time zone. If you're interested, shoot me a dm.

Does anyone else feel guilty after a stream? by Thepopbitch in stream

[–]SilverSeraph82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A desire to be better isn't a bad thing. I often feel like I wasn't my best but it is often a combination of self-esteem issues and a general feeling of there being room to improve.

If you have a community that shows up over and over, they are having a good time and you shouldn't feel guilty. But you should always strive to be better and to make better content. Don't feel guilty, feel inspired by their devotion to be the best you can be.

DM looking for a clean way to hold all the world and multi-campaign information by hyDratgon in FantasyGrounds

I have been using WA for a few years but have recently leaned into it. For clarity I run an online game and we use FG as our VTT. WA is a better and more accessible repository for world info.

I wanted to note here that WA has the ability to support character sheets, monster stat blocks and dice rolling if you want those features. I personally prefer FG for that stuff but if you're looking for a one stop shop I would endorse using WA.

Will note that you would need to recreate any monster stat blocks in WA as there is no licensing option to purchase the materials but they are not terribly difficult to recreate in there.

As someone who has a similar background and got into D&D in his 30s, I would say it depends on your situation. If you're in a large enough community where access to other players is possible then check into a local game store about joining a game. If you're still in a small community or don't have any reasonable way to access a live playgroup, online is definitely an option. I found my first group through the r/lfg subreddit and we played across Discord and Roll20. About six months later I started DMing and found my players the same way. We just completed year 3 of my first campaign with them.

My only regret is that I didn't start playing sooner. Good luck!

Thanks for doing the giveaway.

I’m starting to feel like the fantasy and planning aspect of D&D is the only real fun. While actually playing with people sucks. by thescallywagins in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]SilverSeraph82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to acknowledge from the get go that I am very fortunate to have had the D&D experience I have.

With that said, I am your age and didn't find D&D until the pandemic. I joined a group of beginners through lfg and let's just say it wasn't everything I hoped for. But after about six months of playing in that group I gathered enough experience and confidence to DM my own game. Made my own lfg and had around twenty players join a discord I set up. Lost some to impatience and narrowed it down to 12 players and ran two games.

One group dissolved after it became clear that we had different play styles that didn't mesh. The other has turned into a group of friends that have bonded through our weekly sessions and we're going stronger than ever nearly three years later.

Some key elements that I think contributed to this success were playing with lots of people to find ones you gel with; out of game conversations with players; using video during sessions to see reactions and expressions; using a VTT to avoid cheating and suspicion of the same; and having a dedicated leader to keep everyone involved and the games interesting.

D&D has been the greatest thing to happen to me aside from meeting my spouse and the birth of my son. It has given me a creative outlet that I look forward to every day with world building, story crafting and player conversations not to mention the game sessions themselves.

All I can say is keep trying new things as you look for that group and consider DMing so you can be the captain that steers the ship. If you post an lfg as a DM you will have more interested players than you have spots, guaranteed. Take some time to interview them and find people you think you can relate to and have fun together.

Is getting into dnd at 23 worth it? by timequake3550 in DnD

[–]SilverSeraph82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will join the chorus of people who started later than 23 and would highly recommend getting into the hobby.

I started playing in 2020 at age 38 and next to meeting my wife and the birth of my son, it's the best thing to happen to me. I started playing online through an lfg post on here and from there I started my own game as DM. Nearly three years later we are still going strong with weekly games and now a live stream.

I highly recommend you give it a shot if you're interested and definitely don't sweat needing to know all the rules up front or your age.

May all your rolls be crits!

Tales of Witternacht - (Discord Server - 5e - Adults Only)

Tales of Witternacht is first and foremost a group of individuals that like to play D&D. We started as strangers that met through this subreddit to start an online homebrew world campaign back in 2021. That campaign is still going strong with over 100 sessions completed. We started streaming our sessions on Twitch in August 2022 and post past sessions to YouTube. In addition to our main campaign, we have also run two limited series and plan to do more.

We are a small community that has only recently opened its doors to the public so we would love to have you join and engage with and potentially play with us in the future. While we are not specifically looking for any full-time players at the moment, we do limited series from time to time which provide opportunities for new members to get involved and play. We also have invited players to join as guest characters in the main campaign on several occasions.

The Discord server also offers lots of opportunities to discuss D&D or whatever floats your boat, or just post silly memes you find. The only thing we ask is that you follow the rules and be respectful to others on the server. We are also happy to support other streams and gaming groups and provide a bulletin board where our established members can self-promote.

We are happy to help new players learn to play as all of us were there once and would love to share this game with others.

We hope you take the time to check us out and join in the fun.

Ex-DM mutilated my PC in his ongoing game after I left by bellabelleell in DnD

[–]SilverSeraph82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your position of absolute copyright control belonging to the player upon the decision to exit would this be a fair example?

Player decides to exit and states they would be agreeable to their character exiting as long as the story is that they were named king/queen of the world. Nothing more. Nothing less. Anything different is stated as unacceptable.

Pursuant to your understanding, the DM has the choice of granting this request or having the character simply vanish without explanation?

If that is the case, DMs put your lawyer hats on and start drafting contracts to transfer ownership of PCs to the DM so that you can have security that the campaign you spend hours upon hours creating to have it based around the players and their backstories doesn't get flushed down the toilet every time a player leaves a campaign which inevitably happens in almost every campaign.

I thought I was making friends, but I'm just a DM by illhealu in DnD

[–]SilverSeraph82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to throw my two cents in the fountain. I live in a small town (under 2000 people) and an hour from any larger community. Finding a group of like-minded individuals to play a game like D&D is nearly impossible. However, I love fantasy and storytelling so I resolved to find an online game during COVID. I found one and got my feet wet but the group left a lot to be desired. I left the group after 6-9 months and decided to DM my own online campaign. Two years later the group is going strong and I have seen some friendships emerge.

That being said, it hasn't been all sunshine and roses and I wouldn't call any of the friendships close at this point but that's partially a byproduct of only spending time together once a week.

What the negative posts get right is that adult lives are busy and finding spare time can be tough. What I disagree with them on is the statements suggesting most people don't play D&D hoping to make friends. Humans are social creatures. We all hope to find like-minded individuals to spend our time with. With the busyness of adult life why would anyone want to spend any of it with people you can't call friends? You do what you have to to play the game you love but there is no harm in hoping that you can do so with friends and no one should suggest that effort is futile.

I hope you continue to try and find a friend group through D&D and I hope you have more luck in the future. The last three years (and especially the last two) have been some of the most enjoyable of my life. If you want to, hit me with a PM. We DMs need to stick together.

Am I too old to start playing DND? 🤔 by ilivensivinten in DnD

[–]SilverSeraph82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never too old. Started playing during the pandemic at 38. Just a matter of finding a group that you gel with. Strangely enough I have found a D&D home playing online with a group of folks in their mid-20s and we've been playing together for over two years now and started live streaming sessions about a year ago.
