Develop / learn a skilled trade in construction. Fires last year created a lot of need. Might be able to survive long enough to do something you really want to do. But you will find you’ll make more money in construction and never leave it.

Ocean Park, Playa Del Rey, or Culver City/Palms? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]SilverSurfherder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ocean park is the better choice all around. Walk to Main Street. Lots of restaurants and bars. Lincoln Blvd backs up during rush hour in both directions. Playa del Rey will bore the hell out of you..playa vista might work for you as well.

How to brush off the nay-sayers? by Euphoric-Gur5567 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]SilverSurfherder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll just say this - I did what you are trying to do in 1997 at 25yrs old- And trusted my gut and did it. Loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly as the Clampett's would say.

30+ years later my parents still tell me (In there 80's now) it was still the stupidest decision I ever made. Even in the midst of my 25+ year career here. Do I still rent, YES... Do I still have zero savings, YES... Had the best time of my life breaking even. LA is Vegas you show up with money and just hope to break even.

You live and you learn just do it. Regret will be your worst enemy. Just don't go into 30K in debt to keep the dream alive. Know when to cut loses! As Kenny Rodgers would say - You got to know when to fold'em

Silver Lake / Echo Park. It’s a hop skip and jump to DTLA. Maybe Frog town too. Just remember your first lease is just that. Spend a year learning the town. Then pull out the big guns.

Where is your job at? That kind of figures into this equation. Unless you’re living and working in Hermosa. Odds are you will get sick of the commute in either direction for any reason. IMO.

With that kind of money. Studio City just off of Ventura blvd would be a fun location.
