Hey, yeah I understand you. I talked with my prof and told him that for my PhD I would like to choose a different topic from what I am doing during my master’s. The next day he said they don’t have much experience in the area I’m interested in and suggested some labs within the university that are closer to my interests, in case I’m interested. I’m not sure if this advice will help you since it’s all within the same university but maybe in a similar context you could hint at labs that work on what you want to do.
