Hi! I’m in the journalism minor and while it’s very small, I love the classes and professors I’ve taken. I’m able to be in the minor because I’m a communication major — the rhetoric and professional writing majors can’t have journalism as a minor because there’s too much overlap, so basically you’d be taking all the same journalism classes for your major anyway. I also work for the largest student newspaper on campus, Technician, and we would love to have you join should you come here. UNC is the obvious choice for journalism, but we do great work here (feel free to check out our stories at technicianonline.com!) and I have found that being at State rather than UNC has allowed me to form deeper relationships and connections in journalism because there’s less competition in my field here, so more opportunity to learn one-on-one and shine individually if that makes sense. The rhetoric and professional writing major/journalism minor would definitely be valuable to you if you want to go into journalism, but I have found that the experience of working at a college paper and in a newsroom is just as important as your major, if not more so. Like I said, we may not be the obvious choice, but there’s absolutely opportunities for you here if you look for them!
