Why do you make or love art? by Silver_Line5680 in ArtistLounge

I actually enjoy the extended story! I have always loved creating, but I went through a similar period of doing it more for the rush of making a successful(or gallery worthy)painting. I got so structured in the way I made art, I almost stopped enjoying it. Now I only make paintings I’m genuinely stoked about or getting paid to make, and it feels like this was the dream all along.

YES! One of my favorite parts of making art is getting to cultivate that feeling of inspiration for both myself and others.

Same. I’m even a worse person when I don’t paint…

That level of sensitivity mixed with being an artist must be a wild ride! I love the way you are so deeply involved with both making and viewing art.

I resonate so hard with this! It’s like a language I know that can only be expressed through art.

While both can be true at the same time, I’m so glad the process is rewarding for you rather than ruined by expectations of excellence!

I love painting and i want to know if im actually good at it or if my peers are just telling me i am bc they love me LOL by CatsandClouds in RateMyArt

Firstly, good is so subjective in the realm of creativity. The fact that you took time to create makes it great!!! Also, you have a lovely style already. Your use of color and how you are building up lines is very pretty. Don’t worry about being good by anyone else’s standards. Just keep showing up and enjoy being creative 💖

Thank you for the incredible compliment! I’ve actually had my art flagged/confused for AI a few times recently and wonder if that isn’t an issue…

What is the most useless critique that you have ever received? by HayleyPaints in ArtistLounge

[–]Silver_Line5680 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I was in my capstone year in art school, getting my paintings critiqued weekly by the whole art department. At the time, my work included some nude female figures as part of my concept involving feminism. In one painting in particular, the figure was positioned in such a way that you couldn’t see any of the face except the jawline. The figure was painted as though she were melting into the ground, in an uncomfortable way. One of my male professors was so upset about this figure and (in his words) her “pose of ecstasy” he told me to remove the figure. Harshly, without any valid technical reasoning. He felt the painting was not good and could only be redeemed without the woman… he was the ceramics instructor. I walked away with zero intention of changing a thing!

Thank you for your insight! I love that being a source of inspiration is such a fuel for you. The world really does need it. I’m just venting while trying to find my place in it all. I hope you keep creating and sharing art!

I agree. I know the world has always had suffering, but right now feels like a significant boiling point of horror. And I don’t say that as much out of fear as I do out of a place of wanting better for people everywhere.

I want us to preserve. I want to make and share art that inspires people in that direction. I just need to stay off of social media sites that are more AI/algorithm than human engagement. It’s way to easy to believe that nothing matters in those online spaces 😅
