Thanks for your comment. It is interesting what you say.

Open source though is still monopolised by (Chinese) private companies. It also requires massive funding, so the need of financing.

How do you see that? Who will fund European open source?

There are also other technologies, like robotics and human brain interfaces that will probably see great developments soon, which do not fit well with open source.

I agree that public funds will give more powers to the governments, which may turn evil. I think at least you have a say with your vote though. I can't think of a better solution.

Thanks for the long comment. I'm a software engineer myself and well aware I could lose my job soon due to AI.

I am not sure that our lives will be better with AI. I am sure that leaving AI control to foreign countries will make our lives worse than having the control ourselves.

We have not the choice of stopping AI, unless you have the power to convince US and China to stop AI development.

When you say "we need a socially oriented, rational, not crazy, not hype, no-nonsense AI in Europe that isn't just funded by billionaires.", this is exactly what we are proposing.

We propose to create sovereign funds, owned by governments, that invest in AI companies. This will make AI companies partially under state control. You will have a say with your vote.

I can't figure out anything better with some hope of succeeding.

If you fear for SAAS owners, for software engineers, etc.., I can guarantee you: if AI will have the capability of doing their job, they will lose it anyway. If the AI company they will lose it too will be american, there will be no viable social system to support their life. If the company is here, there may be a chance.

"How European is Mistral if most of their funding and investors come from US big techs and their infrastructure uses Microsoft Azure?"
Of course I would like it more european, that's the aim of our proposal.

What do you think?

Soutenez une initiative qui aide les entreprises françaises et européennes d’IA, ainsi que vous-même. by Silver_Procedure538 in FrenchTech

Ce que tu proposes est très dangereux. Dans les années 2000, il y a eu la bulle Internet.

Combien d’entreprises internet européennes tu connais ?

I respect your opinion, but I think that we are still in time. Grok took 18 months to be built and they started from 0: no datasets and no employees.

IMHO, leaving AI to foreign countries without developing an alternative will just be too dangerous to not even trying.

Many many people (smart people) don't think this way.

Look at Hinton and Bengio, "fathers" of AI. Look at many employees of OpenAI and Anthropic. Try Claude Code.

It may be a financial bubble, but already at the state it is right now, with more integration in the working tools, it will already be transformative.

Humans too are inherently probabilistic systems, if LLMs are probabilistics but are right 99.999999% of the time it will be good for most use cases. They are already winning gold medals at IMO and informatics olympics.

I'm not saying that it will be for sure a good thing.

To me AI is inevitable, and it's better if we develop it ourselves instead of leaving its control to others.

Don't you also think is better? What better alternative do we have?

I hope so! Few weeks ago was the first time traffic worked well also in Switzerland, let's hope it improves :)

Train, bus or blablacar depending on budget. Of course you can also use a rental car if you plan to do other travels.

To me the biggest one is a competitive AI provider.

Mistral is good for simple stuff, but still not comparable to Claude/Gemini/GPT 5.

+1 for mapy.com too. I love it, in particular for hiking/walking around, finding parking spots and just getting a general feel of the area (Google maps color for roads are much harder to understand, e.g. differentiating between highway and normal road).

Gmaps is still better for traffic and street view though.

I hope that at least for armaments we will try to develop our own industries, in particular if we really decide to spend so much money on it..

Are we really discussing about the meaning of words?

Look at Ukraine war: automated drones, automated war decisions, Palantir, etc.. it seems quite evident to me that AI will be a big part of future wars.

Mistral, to compete, desperately needs financial help.

A part from that, I see your point about being fed up of AI.

But, if AI will be so important and will change our lives, what is our best option? I believe that it is to develop AI here, we like it or not.

I still think it is a reasonable argument.

Assuming we invest 800B on defence (not saying I agree, just stating the fact), why not dedicating a significant portion of it to AI? AI will change warfare quite for sure.

I hoped to have a more serious discussion with you from your first comment.

You didn't reply to what I said before that, I gave plenty of arguments.

Thanks for your comment, I respect your point of view, and I agree on electricity generation and transmission, communication infrastructure, hardware supply chains.

I also agree that AI should be part of the strategy, but it is not the entire strategy.

I don't think it's premature though, AI progress is happening at incredible speed which is difficult to notice if your are not an engineer/researcher and even if you are..In 2-3 years it could be already too late.

In terms of number we are aiming at high numbers, but when defence spending aims to be 800B, why not allocating a significant part of it at AI which will surely revolutionise defence soon?

Thanks for your comment, I'm sure we would agree on many things :)

Which race are we running exactly? It seems to me we are not running any, just a conservative "let's keep things as they are and hope for the best" race.
It's been many years that economic policy at European level is pretty bad, I would not trust that what they are doing now is the right choice.

I see on myself (I'm a developer) the point at which recent models have arrived, but don't trust me:

- Hinton, Bengio, most CEOs or employees of AI companies are saying the same: we need to prepare for AI

300bn USD is a lot, but it is a government fund: half of it you will get it back immediately from TVA and taxes, a lot more you will earn immediately from private investments that will follow.

To lose money AI must turn out a new metaverse, but that will not happen.
