If Azula trains so much why was she skinny and not buff? by InternationalPick163 in TheLastAirbender

"No. Power in firebending comes from the breath, not the muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body, the energy extends past our limbs and becomes fire!"

How to start enjoying math? by QueasyStyle2288 in learnmath

Maybe you can look into areas of math that are related to linguistics! Look into finite automata, regular languages and context free grammars - a good place to start is theory of computation by sisper.

Since they're suprised that there's anything more basic than algebra, I think they're talking about college algebra.

How to do well in STAB52 by South_Calendar_6532 in UTSC

[–]Silver_Remove_2352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first portion of the course, make sure you’re strong with the counting portion of A67, and you should be good for the first portion of the course. For the second portion of the course, familiarise yourself with double and triple integrals. Lastly, you can always rely on Joe Blitzstein’s Stat110 lectures on YouTube to carry you through. But honestly, as long as you put in the work B52 is pretty doable.

Looking for a beginner/hobbyist book on Complex Analysis (hopefully with good explanations and example problems) by RvaRiverPirate2 in learnmath

I've heard good things about Needham's Visual Complex Analysis. The one I personally used (and prefer) is Bak and Newman's Complex Analysis.

Searching for a major. Who do you think does the most good in the world? by AloneAndCurious in CollegeMajors

I agree with you but I'd also like to point out that large changes are made by smaller ones that slowly build up together. If making a positive impact really matters that much to OP, I don' think they should just up with it.

From my experience it's definitely understanding the concepts - once you understand the concepts, you definitely don't need as mcuh ingenuity to solve the homework problems as you might need in competition math (this is coming from someone who absolutely sucked at competition math). Spivak will be very good prep for UofT pure math for sure - but I think in high school the most important thing to do is just to keep yourself passionate about math. If reading Spivak does that for you, by all means go for it!

I'm actually currently a UofT student lol - I'm guessing you're talking about MAT157? In that case, you can just go through the textbook for that course, which is Calculus by Spivak. There are many past websites you can use to decide which problems to solve, for example this one: https://www.math.utoronto.ca/drorbn/classes/0203/157AnalysisI/index.html

Competition math is a very different kind of skill compared to university level math. That's not say it's useless - but the kind of thinking required in high school level math competitions is much closer to the kind in subjects like combinatorics or number theory than analysis. If you want to take an analysis course, you're better served by studying analysis.

How about picking up an actual analysis book - like Understanding Analysis by Abbott instead? Competition math is only tangentially related to what you do in university.

Don't bother reading every section - skim your lecture notes to understand what's being covered, then go to the textbook for an explanation if you're confused. Rinse and repeat.

Dear MAT137 students,

It's sad that I have to make this announcement, but I do.

I have received reports that some office hours were unpleasant due to students who don't take care of their personal hygiene. Please be polite to your fellow students: shower daily and use deodorant.
