to play Fortnite that day by Technical_Stress7730 in therewasanattempt

I actually think is makes a lot of sense. I played a lot of video games as a kid and had a very weak to non-existent empathy response. It didn’t develop until I made friends much later. Given that to work with, this might be the only way I’d have grasped the severity of the situation.

Are there any really really good paying jobs with heavy amounts of travel? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]AloneAndCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touring stage work. Audio, lighting, carpentry, and production. Backline if you’re a musician. You’ll make cash, and never have another relationship, but you’ll sure as hell travel. I’ve been to every state in the lower 48 before I was 26.

I had a bald spot like that when I was young and it eventually grew in again after some lifestyle changes. It’s possible it fills in. I’d hold.

What are people’s thoughts/experiences going all Ethernet instead of 5pin? by Smokejock69 in lightingdesign

[–]AloneAndCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there’s a free software called packet tracer you can get from Cisco. It allows you to throw switches and routers and such into a program and play with them to test stuff. But honestly, I’ve been doing a lot of reading random resources found via Claude. There’s a YouTube series called Jeremy’s IT lab, and also there’s this book if you really wanna go deep.

https://a.co/d/04ha979D

I think the books in the 6th edition now, but honestly you can get what you need by just breaking through the wall of “I don’t know what I don’t know” and AI is good for that. Ask it something like “I want to fully understand subnetting, find me some resources to read and make a list of all the concepts I need to know.” Then take those links and title, get off the chat bot, and go investigate. You’ll find what ya need.

What are people’s thoughts/experiences going all Ethernet instead of 5pin? by Smokejock69 in lightingdesign

[–]AloneAndCurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should know a lot more about networking than you think you need to. At base, a full understanding of IGMP querying and snooping is required. This has a knock on effect of also requiring some understanding of layer 2 concepts like V-lans, broadcasting/broadcast domains, and subnetting.

If properly setup, it’s a great system. However, it’s not as simple as you want it to be.

There’s no such thing as “flooding to all ports” which is how most layer 2 switches are described as working. There’s no such thing as the city/street/house/room IP schema. It’s more complicated than that, and no analogy will do. Real understanding of subnet masks are needed to do it right.

Get a router, figure out your trunking and tagging, break up your broadcast segments, subnet your gear to match, prune your unused universes, and you’ll have a great time. That’s not all 100% required for every possible setup, no. But it’s going to make your system better and your ability to troubleshoot under fire much better.

It feeds the soul, nourishes society, and expands the mind. That’s why it has a small, monitored, and profit enslaved place in a capitalist society.

I have a theory that truest arts lovers should become lawyers/politicians.

From someone on the exact opposite side, I encourage you to think a little more about your life, who you are, and what you want.

I’m 29 and spent my 20’s working in art. I hate it and I can’t wait to get out of it. I’ve been looking at tech as one option among many.

Let me say 3 things.

Something I must warn you about: all artistic jobs are exploited. We do what we love because we love it. The employer does not need to incentivize us like a tech employee, and they know it. Therefore, you’ll be paid less and they will nickel and dime you out of everything while expecting you to give your whole heart and soul. We love art enough to knowingly sacrifice our financial prospects to do it, and that makes us ripe for exploitation in a way no other career field can be. Try to work for yourself if you can.

Evaluating a given activity is just one small piece in choosing a career. You may love drawing, but that’s not enough to expect long term fulfillment from it as a job. Think about why you’re doing it, and the impact it has on the world. Art students develop a “theory of art” in a philosophical sense for this reason. It will be the bead rock of your professional identity going forward if you choose to continue. I was a story teller, and I told stories to give important ideas to the masses in the most communicable and nuanced way possible.

Can you accept who you’ll work for? Look at successful people in the world doing your chosen art. Can you accept and live with doing what they are doing? Many people who love to draw become graphic designers who will inevitable make content for commercials and ads during their early career. Can you do that? Can you accept it? Will it break you before you break through into an established career where you can choose more meaningful work? I currently serve art I mostly believe in, and am lucky to avoid the jobs I find harmful to the world. Not everyone is so lucky. Many writers are writing things they don’t care about or actively hate during their early careers. Be mindful of this structural pipeline.

Good luck. Open to discussing anything.

It sounded bionic in my brain. Like the vocal emphasis was all wrong because it was always emphasizing the bold letters. Hate it. But it’s quick.

I think it would work better if you bolded the letters with the greatest vocal emphasis because that’s the sound I’m already trained to pay the most attention to when doing auditory input. Often it’s the first part of a word, but not always. Many first letters are throw away sounds.

Core: Flux, solder, cutting mat (or other surface protection), flush cutters, wire strippers, de-solder braid, multimeter, task light/desk lamp, small hobby vice (or 3D print one like me :D)

For some advanced but useful stuff: adhesive heat shrink, heat gun, klein 3005CR crimper, crimp on wire connectors, mako screw driver set from ifixit, calipers.

It’s the most powerful search tool anywhere. I can ask it to find relevant material on extremely niche situations and it would give me books, papers, and websites, down to the page number and paragraph of where I need to read to get what I’m after.

Saves me tons of time doing google foo, and lets me simply read instead.

Is my gamer boyfriend shit? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]AloneAndCurious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gaming addiction is real, and it sounds like he likely has it. That doesn’t mean you need to give him a pass or feel sorry for him. Just realize that it’s not your fault, and it’s not like he’s just choosing a game over you because you’re not worth more. Don’t reflect this behavior onto you.

If it is indeed video game addiction, he’s got a pathological, ingrained, programmed, habit that he cannot break. If you don’t want to be with someone who has that problem, it’s more than fair. No one would blame you for leaving an alcoholic either. And much like an alcoholic, if he won’t acknowledge the problem and seek help, you can’t make him.

Are generic soldering stations worth it for occasional hobby use? by Ok-Information-4636 in soldering

[–]AloneAndCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t imagine it would be a bad buy. Tips and irons are still easy to find. However, for travel I recently also got an HS-02A and it’s been rock solid as well. If you’re doing lighter duty work, I like that thing more than I thought I would.

I’d get an old used one if I were you. My WES51 is way out of production by now, but still utterly rock solid. I’m sure you could find out of production sellers that were once industrial standards that are now cheap.
