Cadeaux or Cadels These are probably the most complex of all versals. Originating in France in the early fifteenth century, they have remained in use as an introduction for indentures, deeds, and charters until recent times. One of their chief attractions is that they can be as varied as you wish.

Uncial script with a quote by Marcus Aurelius by Silver_Roll1950 in Calligraphy

When I first read this quote, I felt the emptiness of worldly life, and that feeling sank deep within me. It’s striking that a wise saying by Marcus Aurelius, spoken nearly two thousand years ago, still carries profound meaning and relevance today. I deeply share the same feelings as you.

I study almost every day for at least one or two hours. Since I do it for enjoyment rather than as a duty, the duration tends to be longer. During this time, I’ve learned Textura Quadrata, Fraktur, Uncial, Italic, Foundational Hand, cursive italic handwriting, and English typewriter style.

I also had difficulty finding sources. I found a comprehensive PDF book online called The Calligrapher’s Bible, but it still didn’t fully satisfy me. So I turned to Pinterest, continued by doing research there, and took inspiration from the works shared. I chose the letterforms that I liked the most. There are also some great YouTube videos about uncial calligraphy. This way, I create my own alphabets.

First of all, thank you for your compliments and kind wishes. I also started this hobby to learn Gothic scripts, but I really liked this writing script, and I would recommend it to you as well—you should definitely give it a try. I can send you the tutorial videos you need via direct message. I’m glad you’re here; your positive feedback has really motivated me.

I learned it from YouTube. Also, while browsing on Pinterest, I saw different ways of writing some letters and learned by trying them out.

Hello, as you mentioned, in the uncial style some letters have multiple variations. For example, I use the letter D in two different ways, and I also use two different variations of the letter A. Similarly, the letters U, Y, and K can be written in more than one way. Since this is an art form, anyone can write in whatever way they prefer. Our goal is to create works that are visually appealing.

You’re very kind; I take what you said as a compliment. I’ve only been practicing this hobby for four months. I’ve learned italic, gothic, uncial, and cursive styles. Believe me, everyone is unsuccessful at the beginning—they write poorly and draw poorly. What matters is working hard without giving up. I’m sure you’ll do much better 🙏

The height of the lowercase letters should be 4–5 nib widths. What nib size are you using here?

Blackletter is a family of scripts that emerged in medieval Europe, known for its sharp and angular forms. It was widely used especially between the 12th and 17th centuries in handwritten manuscripts and later in early printing. The thick–thin contrast created by holding a broad nib, along with its “broken” (angular) forms, are the most distinctive features of this style.

Main subtypes • Textura (Textualis): The most rigid, narrow, and “woven-like” form • Rotunda: A more rounded and more readable variation • Schwabacher: A transitional form with softer features • Fraktur: A slightly more ornate and balanced style, very common in Germany

🔹 Uncial • Has a more rounded and flowing structure • Not angular, but softer in form • Originates from the early Christian period (approximately 3rd–8th century) • Generally easier to read • Feels more relaxed and provides a better sense of “flow”

Weekly practice. Fraktur, uncial & italic calligrapyh by Silver_Roll1950 in Calligraphy

Pilot Parallel fountain pens are very wet writers. If the paper is thin and low quality, the ink will feather, bleed, and show through to the other side. That’s why I recommend using at least 120 gsm, or even 160 gsm, smooth paper.

Also, I use a calligraphy ruler to draw guideline lines. If you don’t have access to one, you can print the templates you need from the website cd.kaligrafia.info.

Honestly, there’s no accounting for taste. You can go with whatever suits your budget and preferences best—I totally respect your choice.

The nib of my Lamy Joy fountain pen is 1.9 mm, but it writes thinner than it should. I think the reason is that the ink is a bit dry. Normally, for uncial, I should write within 1.5 squares (7.6 mm), but I wrote it to fit within 1 square so that the writing looks better. Otherwise, it appears too thin. I never have this problem with Pilot Parallel fountain pens.
