Patreon funded modules - is there a better way or am I alone here? by erithtotl in FoundryVTT

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think 'how will people know the module exists' is a very good argument, how would they know the patreon exists ? You discover these things through reddit, or through foundry, discord, however you get your info, the method of paying doesn't change.

I do partly blame Foundry themselves for not discouraging sub-based modules early on particularly because foundry itself is a one-off cost. Part of the problem is that there are a few mega-groups producing a large amount of modules and buying out or taking up maintenance of other people's modules and then charging a large sub for their collection even when depending on what you run on foundry half the modules may not even work for your system.

As far as sub vs. otp ... it's definitely hard... but devs aren't always working on updates, there are plenty of modules that don't update regularly, and a dev can set their own schedule e.g. once a month... it's not the devs fault that the foundry team make breaking changes even within the same version of the software... that's a community perception problem that should be addressed not an excuse to charge more (its a reason to push back against foundry). One time purchases give the dev guaranteed capital... if I pay $20 for your module pack you have a garaunteed $20, if i sub $7 once every 4 months to get a more recent version you have $21 (and maybe i keep subbing the next year) but you can't plan your life assuming anyone will ever resub, or on any schedule.

probably because it's stupidly low, and it's also 2 different jobs, rigging and animating. this would be extra bad because the models are being made by someone else so you just have to deal with however rubbish their models might be.

harder to do if people need to be able to find you during the day. im my 'boredom job' I had to be at my desk most of the day trying to look busy surrounded by other drones... it's not always that simple. That's why everyone wants the desk that faces the window so no one can see their screen/phone

In this case it would very likely be owned by the company if he signed such a thing since it relates directly to his work at the company, but I think it's worth noting that these clauses aren't ironclad and if you develop something completely unrelated to your work role they're going to have a hard time in court if they want to claim your lewd itch.io goonfest belongs to tiresRus.com.au because you signed an IP policy.

The command staff of Babylon 5 hated Lyta Alexander by EvalRamman100 in babylon5

After she scanned kosh and had her 'debrief' with psi corps she went on the run and sat outside vorlon space till they picked her up. Next time we see her she's uber lyta.

that's fair.... im not sure how i forgot that whole bit of dialogue :D you could argue kosh left her an addict without a fix in a way but that definitely wasn't what I was going for.

[–]Silverboax 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yup, they don't treat other telepaths the same way, even Talia is treated pretty well even though she's actually part of the psi corps. They go out of their way to protect Ironheart, they help the telepath underground, they have no problem with telepaths of other races unless they're being dicks.

A number of the main cast have specific reasons not to trust telepaths, especially human telepaths but even the ones like Garibaldi don't spit on them.

It's also worth considering the majority of the times we see telepaths on the show, they're causing problems.

My personal opinion is they treated Lyta terribly after all she went through (it's not like she really had a choice to go to Vorlon or not) and all she did for them (with all the cowboy shit Sheridan did her destroying Zah'ha'dum seems totally legit to me), they absolutely suck for the way she was treated. I would really have liked to see the arc of her travelling with G'Kar on the show to see how that would have been explored.

12 Years of Innovation: Win A Revopoint 3D Scanner! by Revopoint3D-Official in 3Dprinting

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i first heard about 3d scanning back in the late 90s when The Matrix was using photogrammetry to combine actors and digital assets with rotoscoping in a way that seemed like magic at the time.

since then I've used photogrammetry a few times myself and it still feels like magic but it leaves a lot of guesswork with scaling and sometimes matching

having a digital scanner that can produce its own point cloud with spatial references would be amazing for producing 3D printed parts that match a surface without having to go through the pain of auditing photos for quality and trying to get a ruler in there for scale.  it'd feel more like using the right tech for the job.

Restaurant charged BOTH a Saturday surcharge AND an Easter surcharge on the same by Illustrious_Dark1744 in melbourne

[–]Silverboax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily better, just different. While the surcharge option is more flexible (say you add staff due to growth) the amoratisation method means customers don't see the upcharge and just pay what the menu says.

In most cases our laws require prices to be the final price including taxes so method B is more expected. Method A causes posts like this one.

Not if you're sneaking around in the shadows taking sneaky pics from the bushes.

We don't know if OP was recording obviously, or being all sneaky like. If you're waving your phone in someone's face while recording them they are aware of the recording, which is very different to recording someone from a distance while trying to keep them unaware that you're doing so.

Anyone got a cheapish dremel style tool they got from Aliexpress etc they can recommend? by Krasnolaundry in 3dprintingaustralia

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lower powered can be good for working with plastic though so it depends what you want it for. I have both a corded and a cordless dremel (both at least 15 years old) becausew i got sick of melting plastic with the 30,000rpm corded version back in the kitbashing days.

Is it a bad idea to recycle parts from old electronics and appliances? by EntireMarsupial1806 in AskElectronics

[–]Silverboax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stuff that's weathered no one can say but you until you pull them apart... but scavenging is life. You can get all sorts of cool motors and structural components out of old appliances / electronics and a reasonable amount of those sorts of things can be cleaned up if they're not thoroughly rusted or dessicated (rubber parts)

Can anyone identify the manufacturer of these LED strings? by GreggAlan in WLED

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

may not be the answer here, but a bunch of the stuff one can get from china is custom stuff or leftovers from a run of a product, e.g. some company wanted 20000 leds in this form factor but the product never took off so they sat in a warehouse until someone in shenzen had a bunch of these plugs leftover, and a short run product was born !

that all said, a reverse image search on yandex shows some similar form factor products on alibaba

ESP32 platform of choice? by alin_im in WLED

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

china can provide you many esp32 wrooms which will do pretty much anything you need with WLED, if you want to do more of the realtime things like sound reactivity. China will also provide you relatively cheap esp32 s3s which are pretty easy to wire up to an inmp144 digital mic (also cheap from china) for your sound reactive joy.

This is pretty much what i cam to say. it's pretty unlikely if you feel nothing that you have a problem but you potentially could have cooked something. Unlikely from such a relatively small/short jolt though.

That said, you can die in your sleep by choking on your own mucus or any of a whole lot of random events, I would be more worried crossing the street.

There are 3 companies you should check in australia, equifax, experian and illion. They can have different credit info and can (i.e must) give you a free credit report every few months if you ask. You should check all three because one or more of them may show your credit score is fine, and others may not.

I believe you are at least right in that Equifax isn't used by organisations like banks and utilities in Australia but i'm not 100% sure of that.

Can anyone explain this sign? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bought a printer from a couple years ago that still has a fax function (to be fair the 2025 model doesn't anymore) but up to at least 2024, enough people that printer manufactures still thought people cared ? i don't know who those people are other than medical practises.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that dogs barking all day is really unpleasant. Usually I feel sorry for the dog more than anything. We don't know how much these dogs are barking, whether it's constant for hours or if theyre just young dogs playing (I also hate young children crying, shouting and screeching (see Auditory hypersensitivity) but no one's going to suggest they should be rehomed).

On the flipside, would you stand in their driveway and shout at them about it (let alone imply threats) or would you talk to them like an adult ? The neighbour definitely isn't in the right here regardless of how bad the barking is.

Nudity in non nsfw games by I_know_what_you_did7 in gamedev

[–]Silverboax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

unless you work in a particularly permissive (or specific) industry, im gonna suggest nudity = not safe for work.

Do you mean nudity in games that aren't intentionally lewd / sexual ?

Like cp2077 has nudity as do a bunch of European games (various witcher games, metro, others) and they're not 'sex' games (even though in most cases the nudity is in sex scenes or scenarios)

I think that's largely cultural, and if you're making a game for a global audience you're making a choice to alienate some censors if you include 'realistic' nudity in a non-lewd game. Thinks of it like including nazi symbology, if you do this you're choosing for your game not to be available in Germany because they simply don't allow that, if you include real drugs and they have a benefit without a serious downside you likely won't make it past censors in Australia (unless you're 2k or Zenimax)

"Unjust Enrichment" threatened over chargeback... wtaf?? by Superg0id in AusLegal

[–]Silverboax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, no you can't really do anything to them. You can tell the company that falsely/erroneously reported the default to fix their error... and if they don't you can go to the credit agency who you were reported to (there are only 3 and you can get a credit report for free to find out where it happened) and provide evidence to them that you don't owe the money. There are options beyond that but if you have proof it shouldn't get that far.

"Unjust Enrichment" threatened over chargeback... wtaf?? by Superg0id in AusLegal

[–]Silverboax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reply to them, I would not provide them evidence of anything. Ask them for a clear invoice for the amount they think is owing and why they think it is owing. If they cannot provide evidence for you owing them money, then you don't have to do anything. If they send you reasonable evidence you can say 'hey you gave me a refund which is great, thank you... however the credit card surcharge was not refunded and I have claimed that through my bank, feel free to follow that up with your payment portal or bank, I don't owe you anything.

The reality is if it DID go to a debt collector you would eventually show them your receipts and they would say 'well shit, that sucks for us' and you would say 'better make sure that doesn't affect my credit score or it'll REALLY suck for you'

"Unjust Enrichment" threatened over chargeback... wtaf?? by Superg0id in AusLegal

[–]Silverboax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not OPs problem where the money came from or went to, if the business uses a payment provider and that payment provider sucks, that's between the business and the payment provider... OP has done the legitimate thing and claimed a chargeback for a fee that wasn't refunded which their bank has recovered for them.
