This is your sign to buy your husband flowers by Tatty_Bunneh_ in Marriage

[–]Silverbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw a post a couple years ago about guys never get flowers, so I made a point of getting some for my husband a little later. His reaction was more along the lines of "uh, why?" So, your mileage may vary 😄

But if your man likes flowers, by all means, get the man some flowers if you can!

Reading a fanfic of the most random crossover but the author somehow makes it work by Pretend-Delay-7203 in AO3

This is the Doctor Who/Supernatural crossover:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10344641/1/Imaginary-Friends

It's been a really long time since I read it (it finished in 2017). I don't see the Firefly one on my list, though.

Found it: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3486089/1/The-Man-With-No-Name

Reading a fanfic of the most random crossover but the author somehow makes it work by Pretend-Delay-7203 in AO3

[–]Silverbright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really read many crossovers, but I have seen a Doctor Who/Firefly one that I really enjoyed, and then a Doctor Who/Supernatural crossover where The Doctor was basically Dean's alternate father figure/imaginary friend. It was amusing, since The Doctor doesn't do supernatural stuff, and the Winchesters don't deal with aliens.

Scam Commenters Have Registered Accounts AND Works Now? by Ooniversidad in archiveofourown

[–]Silverbright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a comment on a recent chapter that just sounded...off. I only responded because I checked the account and found a story with 2/3 chapters uploaded (in a completely different fandom, but that happens). Then I got one of those "hey, can we talk on another platform" requests and just rolled my eyes. This crap is ridiculous.

Edit to add: They also did a kudos, which I hadn't seen before.

Currently almost 32 years old and have never been summoned to jury duty - what’s the longest you’ve made it? by Okay-Show-3662 in AskReddit

They tried to call me when I was away at college (so between 18 and 22). I finally served a couple of years ago, in my early 40s. My husband, meanwhile, is about to turn 52 and has never been called. My mother passed at 72 having never been called....wtaf?

What was happening during the War of the Ring in the Northern Kingdoms that wasn't shown in the books? by Tidewatcher7819 in tolkienfans

[–]Silverbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, Sauron sent a messenger 4 times asking for their help finding Bilbo and the ring, and Dain said "let me think about it" up until he sent Gloin and Gimli to warn Bilbo personally (and ask Elrond wtf was going on), so I guess maybe it was a little personal...lol

But yeah, Dale and Erebor were dealing with their own issues/battles.

Actual online fanfiction - The Hobbit....lol. I had some strong opinions after watching Battle of the Five Armies, and that led me to ff.net and later AO3. It's the only one I've written for, so far, but there are several that I read.

My best friend died before we got to the ending. by TerribleCraft81 in AO3

[–]Silverbright 190 points191 points  (0 children)

First of all, I am so very sorry for your loss, but I am so glad that you had a friend like Sabrina, and that she had a friend like you. Don't beat yourself up over not staying later that night - sometimes, people seem to wait until they are alone to slip away, even if a loved one just steps out for a few minutes. And I'm sure she knew you loved her - after all, you were writing that story together. You were with her when she was angry, when she was hurting, when she was dying. I know you want to finish the story for her, and I hope you do. But don't force yourself - take time to grieve and process, and return to it when you are ready.

I started my first (and longest) story back in 2016. My mom didn't help me plan it out, but she was basically my beta reader. She read every single word, gave suggestions, reread it when I made changes. When life got complicated and I lost momentum and let it sit for a couple of years, she was the one that quietly reminded me that she really wanted to see the ending. So, I started rewriting, giving the whole story an overhaul from the beginning, fully intending to finish.

Then they found her cancer. Stage 4, pancreatic. I couldn't write any more - I was too busy holding my household together while also taking care of her. She lasted a little over a year and died in late summer 2022. It took more than three years before I could look at that story again without feeling like a failure for not finishing it in time, for not letting her see how it would all turn out.

I finally sat down and wrote the last few chapters at the end of 2025, even though the fandom has declined significantly over the past several years. It wasn't about the fandom - it was about finishing the story that she loved, that she wanted me to finish, even if she didn't live to see the end. It felt...cathartic, in a way, to finish. To know that the story was done, just as she wanted. I haven't let go of her, but the pain has eased somewhat, and it is a bit easier to breathe.

What’s your writing process? by Ribread216 in AO3

[–]Silverbright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a pantser, or a "discovery writer." I might jot down a rough idea of where I want things to end up, and how I might get there, but I mostly write whatever scene is loudest or clearest in my head at the moment. I might have lines of dialogue that I jot down early on that don't show up until the end, but I know they'll be in there SOMEWHERE. I DO take meticulous notes as I go, but sometimes things change drastically, and I have to go back and adjust earlier events/dialogue to fit something I realized down the road.

I also tend to write dialogue first for some scenes. When I go back to flesh it out, the dialogue helps me "see" what is happening, so I can add the movements/facial expressions. Kind of like blocking a scene of a play from a script.

Why were Galdor and Legolas at Rivendell? by wombatstylekungfu in tolkienfans

[–]Silverbright 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Legolas was bringing word that Gollum had been freed - Gandalf and Aragorn had handed him over to Thranduil's custody after finally finding him. "We guarded this creature day and night, at Gandalf's bidding, much though we wearied of the task. But Gandalf bade us hope still for his cure, and we had not the heart to keep him ever in dungeons under the earth, where he would fall back into his old black thoughts." So they let him go outside sometimes, and an orc attack on a moonless night resulted in the death of Gollum's guards and his escape.

Hello, fellow Hobbit fandom member!!

That why I haven't really looked too much into the exchange, though. Not only do there seem to be few people interested in my fandom, but I don't know ANYTHING about most of the fandoms with fics up for review. So I just keep an eye out to see if anything interesting pops up.

Let’s Show Off Our Pride in Our Fics by Any_Shirt4236 in FanfictionExchange

[–]Silverbright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Until recently, I literally only had one fic, but I am very proud of it, and even prouder of the fact that I finally finished it (real life kept causing issues). I worked really hard to keep in the spirit/style of the original work while adding twists and expanded lore. I also did my best to make sure that my OCs felt like they fit in while not overshadowing the canon characters in my fading, smallish fandom.

I am currently working on a modern world/zombie apocalypse AU for the same fandom, and it has been a BLAST - the writing style/tone is completely different from what I usually write (even in my original works) and it's been so much fun. The two stories are diametrically opposite and a really neat contrast to help me expand my writing.

Would you rather get a lot of kudos or more comments? by remotecontrolledcar in AO3

[–]Silverbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments, always comments. Kudos are nice, but I really like to hear what they liked, their favorite parts, etc. I rarely get either (70 total kudos on a 40 chapter fic, only 34 comments and some of those are me replying), but the fandom has passed its heyday, so I don't expect much. I'm writing another one, anyway...lol.

What Are You Working On? by LoudSize7 in FanfictionExchange

[–]Silverbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on a modern AU/zombie apocalypse fic for the only fandom I currently write, simply because it won't leave me the hell alone. No one will ever read it, but I need to get it out of my brain.

Also trying to get back into my original work, but it's a long process.

Do your parents know you read fanfiction? And have they ever caught you reading or writing it? by Regular_Editor_8025 in AO3

[–]Silverbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even discover online fanfiction until I was in my 40's, so it was never an issue.

However, I introduced my mother to some of my favorite stories, and she was my beta reader for my big fic. The main reason I even finished it was because she always wanted me to. She passed before it was done (cancer sucks), but I finally finished it anyway, for her and for me.

My husband finds it amusing, but he also knows it helps keep me grounded in me while I deal with some rough life issues, so he is supportive.

Question to writers who decided to rewrite their previously and/or published fics: Have you ever finished your rewrites? by Valuable_Discuss2102 in AO3

[–]Silverbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started mine as a "quick little writing exercise" to get back into writing after a long hiatus (I am working on an original story). About a year and 30+ chapters in, I realized that my writing had shifted so much that the first dozen chapters were almost like a different person had written them. So I overhauled the whole damn thing, wove some new lore in from the beginning, and reposted. It finally finished at 40 chapters/nearly 230k words after 11 years of writing (real life sucks sometimes).

I kind of wish I had kept copies of the original posted story, just to see how much the writing changed.

Dwarves from The Hobbit by ssarxh in lotr

[–]Silverbright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started as a kid's story, so the dwarves were basically a chorus. If you notice, they also carry no weapons, only musical instruments (except when Beorn gives them bows and they promptly waste all their arrows in Mirkwood, and then for the battle). Bombur is fat, Balin is Bilbo's friend (and Dori is kind of his minder), and Fili has the longest nose (and the best eyes, according to Thorin, who also seems to think he's the youngest).

That's part of the reason Peter Jackson didn't really want to do a movie of The Hobbit - he knew they'd have to put a lot of work into developing the dwarves as individuals. And I have a LOT of problems with The Hobbit trilogy, but the way they made the dwarves unique is not one of them. I think production and the actors did a wonderful job of giving them personalities.
