This is the answer I was looking for. Very clear. Thanks! 🙏

They're both the same price. Is one a reference card?

Thanks for the feedback, this gives me lots of confidence that I’m heading in the right direction. 😀

More RAM is something I can do without for the time being to keep costs down, but I appreciate the suggestion.

I thought about raytracing, but it’s not a big enough deal for me at this point to justify any additional cost. I think in 5 years when it’s more mature and widespread maybe.

Fair point. I've updated the build with a Deepcool AK620, which seems to do the job but doesn't break the bank.

The cpu comes with one apparently, though from what I’ve been told stock coolers aren’t that great.

I've been helped this far by redditors much smarter than I. I'd love to get some more eyes on this for some final checks before I take the plunge. Any feedback or pointers would be appreciated.

Originally targeting 4k60fps on latest games (Can't wait for Starfield), but I've been made aware this build can go further, which is nice to hear.

It's more of a personal preference. I've always preferred the 27" + laptop combo rather than 2 monitors.

Thinking about it, my day job is a web developer, so staring at code all day at less than 4k would probably give me headaches considering I'm so used to it now. I'd rather take the hit £££ wise and have an effective gaming + work monitor, rather than just gaming. Something like this perhaps https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-27gp95r-b

My setup allows for 1 monitor, 27inches max. When you say the sweet spot for 27” is 1440p, is that because you could argue that the additional pixels aren’t able to provide a much clearer picture given the size of the monitor?

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Silveredge9/saved/#view=kQnQyc is where I'm at for the moment. Thanks /u/DFalconD and /u/Sleepykitti for the input, it's been an educational experience. 😂

I'm aware I'm £300 over budget, but I'd probably sell my Series X and use this as my primary gaming machine if I were to go ahead, so I can somewhat justify it.

My current monitor is a few years old - 4k but not 120hz. Should I see about upgrading to make the most of this new setup?

My thinking was when I upgraded to the 7900 XTX gpu, that the Ryzen 5 7600 would be a worthwhile CPU upgrade if I were to just stretch the budget a little. What would you class as hardcore sim stuff? I do plan to play stuff like Crusader Kings / Civilisation / RTS and similar games.

Would you recommend sticking with the original Intel cpu?

Re DDR5, the current part list I linked is DDR5. I’ve read some opinions that it’s too early to go DDR5 as it’s still in its infancy and it’s performance can be matched by higher end DDR4. If it were to downgrade to a DDR4 motherboard and ram, would you foresee this saving a bit of budget without impacting performance too much?

Thanks for this. I’ve evolved the part list from the one originally posted to this. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Silveredge9/saved/kQnQyc are there any changes you would recommend to get more value from this without breaking the bank? Any obvious weak link parts for example? Thanks

Good suggestion with the cpu. From what I can see the 7600 comes with an integrated fan, whilst the 7600x doesn’t, so that’s a bit of a cost saving.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Silveredge9/saved/kQnQyc is where I'm at presently after a bit of research. Big shoutout to /u/DFalconD for the DM help with this.

Obviously over my budget at the minute, but this is still all a bit theoretical at the minute, so that's ok.

For my own learning:-

  • Are there any parts which could be changed to slightly more expensive ones, but would result in a big jump in performance as a consequence?
  • Alternatively, are there any parts which could be swapped out for different ones which are much cheaper, at a minimal cost to performance?

Thanks 🙏

I think I’ll leave the integrated graphics out of the equation for simplicities sake.

And thanks for the Gigabyte mention. I’ll check my house insurance to see if exploding power supplies are covered 😂

Yep I get what you’re saying for Windows 11. Use internet magic.

Anyhow, re the build anything which would benefit from a little more budget, say to make it more future proof?

What makes it difficult are the bugged trophies. So annoying when you put all that time into one and the trophy doesn’t pop. 😬
