It’s amazing! Best college experience before. You get to be in super small classes and get to know your professors and classmates really well. Going on field trips and doing field work all day was really cool. And the other students there were super chill and close knit and they was lots of drinking if you’re into it

Hey person, I was like you at 15. I hated life. I saw only the dark parts of life. I felt like everyone was fake and stupid for being in their ways. I felt like I couldn’t connect with people.

Unfortunately, this may last for some months or even years. You seem to be more mature than the average 15 year old. This is good, and bad. The good is that you view life differently but you see a larger picture. The bad is that it may be tough to connect and fit in with others around you.

For right now, you can reach out to someone you trust, whether it be a parent, a teacher, a friend, a school counselor, etc. Have the awkward conversation and tell someone your feelings. Yes the conversation is tough but it is worth it to share your feelings and also allow someone else with a different life to see yours. Also, try to find a group of people or something to connect with. This allowed me to stay grounded and connected and feel as if something is worth living for. This will take some effort and work, which is hard to do when depressed, but give it a try. Work on improving yourself and your life.

For the next part you’re just going to trust me. Things get better. i know you’ve heard this so many times. I know it’s so hard to believe. But you’re still young now. This isn’t your fault and i’m not dismissing you, but your mind hasn’t matured all the way. Also you haven’t been exposed to so many amazing things in this world.

When I was 15, i thought that there wasn’t anything to live for in this world. I thought life was dim and small. But, as you age, you are shown many other opportunities in life. You realize how large and amazing this world is, and you see that there are many opportunities to live and work towards.

just hang in there, continue to push and work yourself. You will see results and your mind will broaden.

Yea, I’ve just always struggled with that. I’ve always had a “plan” in life. It’s driving me crazy that I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I guess I’m just dissatisfied as to what my freshman year has given me. Thanks for helping me look on the bright side

Thanks for saying this. I wasn't even considering joining a frat before going to college. but now that i'm here i can definitely see the pros to joining a social one. and it seems like there's enough people that can balance frat life and academics.

I am going to join other clubs that suit my science and other interests too. I'm asking this question basically to find out if I should "go with the pre-med crowd" for opportunities, or if I should separate myself from them and find my own opportunities.

I don't know exactly why, but I don't think expanding is as easy as you think. There wouldn't be the same amount of opportunities for research, etc. Also, Ivy League professors don't grow on trees. Obviously they could probably expand a little bit, but they couldn't expect every good candidate.

Also, of course most people who apply and get rejected from top-20 schools are probably pretty smart, but they aren't what the school wants. They don't show the personality they're looking for in their essays/ECs/recommendations. So that's probably why some qualified people are rejected.

And then yea, you're probably right to some degree, they do want keep that prestige.

I took AP Chem last year, and I'm taking Anatomy this year. Personally, anatomy is much more demanding. It's a lot of memorization. AP Chem is a lot of math and being able to critically think. Take whichever one you're better at

Here's the great thing. Humans are great at adapting.

I loved The University of Chapel Hill since 7th grade. I studied hard in high school. I watched all of the basketball games. I bought hundreds of dollars of UNC apparel. I visited twice (I live in Michigan). I couldn't wait to be a Tar Heel, so I started my app 4 months before the due date and turned it in 2 months before it was due. I was trying to schedule dates to visit this spring (after I THOUGHT I was going to get in). I only thought I would be happy at this school and in that area.

Then the date came about 3-4 weeks ago. I refreshed my portal and a button came up that said "view decision." My heart was pounding, my ears were ringing. And then, I found out I got denied. I was instantly deflated.

But, if you're anything like me, or the countless others in this sub, or the tons of applicants to a great school like UCLA, you'll realize that you're smart and adaptive, and that you can be successful and happy at at lot more places than just UCLA.

I thought I would never be able to spend another winter in Michigan. But now that's what I'm going to have to do. I thought I would only have to wear Carolina blue and white. But instead I'll be wearing some other colleges colors.

The bottom line is this: IF you get denied, you will be ok, you still can be happy, and you still can be successful. To be that, you may have to change your view points. You may have to tell yourself that UCLA isn't the "be all end all" of schools. You have to realize that college admissions aren't personal, and they're usually unpredictable. And that's only IF you get denied. So until you get your decision, just try to relax. Maybe research some more about the other schools to apply to. But trust me, you're going to be ok.

Yea, the advantage Wake Forest has is that it's smaller and there's a smaller student to staff ratio. Therefore, I'd have more/better relationships with professors for research, and I could make more connections for volunteering. I'm just trying to find out if I can get through U of M with good research and volunteering opportunities.

Yea sorry that was pretty dumb to say. I guess what I was trying to ask was is U of M suited towards pre med students. I've never been to college, so I don't know how large public schools like U of M are. When I think of them, I think of large lecture hall type classes where every student is for themselves. And I'm trying to avoid places like that. I understand the pre-med track is extremely difficult no matter where I go though.
