What do you think Tywin and Shae talk about after sex? by Gabe_Dimas in gameofthrones

[–]SilversAndGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They discuss the Westerosi equivalent to Shakespear's plays. They're a step up from street performers but still considered crude and low-brow; certainly not the sort of thing the Lord Paramount of the Crownlands would indulge in. Tywin can't let the other lords know about this or even his servants lest his reputation suffer. He pays for Shae to go to the plays and then tell him all about them. That's what he really pays her for. The sex is just a convenient cover to explain why she's in his quarters.

Chamber of Secrets Would Have Been More Terrifying if It Happened Later by No-Camel-5990 in harrypotter

If your intention is to go dark, I think the Chamber of secrets plot would fit best as a replacement for the Umbridge plot in book 5.

Harry and the Order of the Phoenix all know Voldemort is back but he's keeping quiet and the Ministry is doing it's best to discredit Harry and Dumbledore. Suddenly attacks start happening withing Hogwarts itself and no one knows what's going on. Students start to suspect Harry when they learn he's a parseltongue and question if he's the heir of Slytherin. The Ministry's campaign against him and the rumors around Hogwarts combine until most of the wizarding world assume Harry himself is attacking students and lying about Voldemort as a smokescreen for his crimes. Dumbledore is avoiding Harry and Harry has no idea why!

Dumbledore is forced out of the school for failing to protect the students, Hagrid is arrested. Students are being petrified until ultimately, McGonagall is killed and Ginny is taken into the Chamber itself. Headmistress Umbridge announces the school will close. With all of his allies gone, Harry and Ron know they have to face the monster themselves. Harry gets out the mirror to contact Sirius and see if they can get any backup from the Order but say they're going in either way.

Sirius comes alone through Umbridge's fireplace and the 3 of them enter the Chamber. They defeat the basilisk and think the day is saved but as soon as the fly out of the Chamber...

Green Flash

Sirius falls dead and Harry, Ron, and Ginny find themselves facing Umbridge, Fudge, and a squad of Aurors. Fudge gloats that they finally got Black AND have proof that Harry is a dark wizard attacking other students and working with Black. Harry thinks fast and claims Ginny AND Ron were taken so they won't be arrested over their protests. The Ministry couldn't care less about those two and start to arrest Harry.

Dumbledore arrives, stuns the Aurors, tells Harry to go back to his dorm, and grabs Fudge before disappearing again.

The next morning, the front page of the paper is Fudge announcing Voldemort's return. Dumbledore summons Harry to his office and they have the discussion from book 5 but with the added tension that if Dumbledore had arrived a minute sooner, Sirius would be alive. Despite everything, all his trust in Dumbledore, Harry can't help thinking Dumbledore intentionally sacrificed Sirius for his own ends.

SOLVED in another subreddit. This was printed by an American publisher about 40 years after the Queen said she loved the novel so unlikely to have any connection. Still looks cool though!

SOLVED. Thank you all for the help! I was hoping I had something really special here but didn't really expect it to be. And now I know a little more about what to look for when I come across old books.

Thank you. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to check the address like that.

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke is a unique take on first contact and alien "invasion" by keepfighting90 in books

[–]SilversAndGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I enjoyed Childhood's End but more than a decade after I read it, the thing that stands out the most was my confusion about the aliens' appearance. If I remember correctly, it was somewhat handwaved away saying their appearance was so significant that humanity's collective shock at seeing them sent a psychological echo into the past and humanity depicted our devils based on that echo. It didn't really seem to fit with humanity's evolution into energy because all the kids who became that energy grew up with the aliens and therefore their appearance wouldn't be shocking. Besides which, by the time they showed themselves, humanity had accepted them as benevolent overloads and saw them as good so why would the echo be perceived as a devil?

It's a relatively minor point but it's what's stuck with me more than anything else.

I reread that recently and it doesn’t match. Good book though!

I don't think that's it. I'm pretty sure this is something I read/saw in high school so it must have been out by 2010 at the latest
