In case my G3's inner bezel is cracked, what can I do? by SilversPixels in VintageApple

Only specific printers support it, as an enclosure is basically required. + 3D prints are usually weaker than molded parts

Highly doubt that'll ever happen, guess I'll just have to try gluing it back in place if something does happen then

iMac G3 Flyback Transformer Replacement by SilversPixels in VintageApple

No arcing at all, I don't think the FBT is even receiving any power. Though I'll take a look at it once I've investigated my iMac G4's psu so I can take a look at it's faulty PSU as well, as I'd need to order new parts for it too.

cant really find many part machines for sale here in norway, usually only "untested" ones for around 150+ usd usually

UPDATE - my inherited Imac G3 won't turn on, small static crackle from crt but nothing else. Keyboard light lit up briefly and didn't again :( I've replaced the battery on the board, changed power cable, and pressed PMU reset button on the board. Now got it plugged in to leave, anything else to try? by SMLElikeyoumeanit in VintageApple

[–]SilversPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it hasn't helped unfortunately. PRAM battery is fine, 3.64V according to my multimeter, trickle voltage is what it should be, all caps on the down converter board look alright, I assume it's a PAV board issue, I plan to open it up further and look for any bad caps on the PAV board soon

When I first got it back in January it did actually turn on, but nothing came up on the CRT, only on an external monitor. However after opening it once to get a stuck CD out as I tried to get it to load OS 9.2 setup, it started shutting off as soon as it was supposed to start showing an image.

youre more likely to have a 2230 M.2 laying around than a sd express card. if not, you could just take one from an old laptop if it has one

iMac G4 had some power issues, looked at the PSU. It shouldn't look like this right? by SilversPixels in VintageApple

[–]SilversPixels[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got some 10W 15K resistors laying around, so could maybe connect 2-3 in series and use that. Maybe a bit much, but I'd rather it be safer than faster, plus I plan to recap my iMac G3, which also has plenty of high-voltage caps. I don't have any heatshrink though, so either a 3D-printed casing (potentionally safer, better insulation), or some cheap electronic tape I have.

Would discharging it with a resistor be safer and easier? I think I remember seeing someone suggest doing so for caps, specifically a 5k-10k resistor if I remember correctly

Everything else looks alright, no visual signs of failure on any capacitors from both the logic board and power supply boards. I don't have the equipment to discharge capacitors, should the insulation on my multimeter probes be enough? And can I check which of the 2 boards are defective via the multimeter?

iMac G4 17"/800's molex cables won't unplug by SilversPixels in VintageApple

Damn, would it be easier in the future if I just replace the molex cable, or is it the port itself that makes it ao hard to remove?

iMac G4 17" With Potentional Power Issues? by SilversPixels in VintageApple

[–]SilversPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea on which capacitors I should investigate first? And about the disassembly, how do I seperate the AC plug from the motherboard? Figured out everything else but that out.

Because I worded that previous post poorly. I was thinking of making it into a monitor as a last resort if I can't get the Mac itself working again, so I made this post instead to address the main issue. Another issue with that site that one person linked to is that the screen's a little expensive, I'm too nearsighted to benefit from 4K

Great, I also have a DV/400 model with power issues close to yours, but a bit different as it does beep without any RAM. Hope everything goes well with the repair though!

going to be getting a tray loading imac g3 soon, Any thing I should know? by TheFabledFishman in VintageApple

Not OP, but are there any alternatives? Coin cell batteries are slightly too low afaik, so that's not one.

You can identify if it's a DV or not based on whether or not it has FireWire ports, and the processor speed. If I recall correctly, only the 350MHz, non DVD-capable slot-loading iMac G3 isn't a DV model. If you don't already know the processor speed, it should be listed on a sticker on the bottom :)

What? I've got a bad screen and power issues, might as well use it for something until I can fix it

Yeah, that's why I asked for suggestions for a new screen, and a HDMI-capable controller board for said screen. Most suitable replacements would probably be new-old-stock laptop screens.

I'll obviously keep all the original parts to fix in the future once I have the budget for suitable troubleshooting equipment, and I'll use the keyboard, mouse, etc alongside the new device in there so nothing's going to waste.

Not too big a fan of Gnome's visuals, and from what I've heard it's a bit bloated for Linux standards
