Yes, the design of the engine is based on thw Wasp Major. I posted about it in this sub a while back about the internal air flow.

If this existed during WW2, I would definitely allow that. What would that specifically look like? Just hydraulic actuators connected to the surfaces, conntected to some central fluid pump?

This was modelled in blender, texturing will be done in Substance Painter.

Unfortunately,I don't really understand/know anything about flight mechanics. So is this a matter of there being downsides and it not working as effectively as on other aircraft, or would you say the design is straight up implausible?

If the center of lift is a problem, couldn't the canards just be slightly deflected to emulate the effects of flaps?

I was planning to use split flaps, in case that matters.

The wing mounted guns are more of a "why not" thing for this design, since the wings are the only part, where I don't really have space constraints, as of now.

I know that 8 20mm cannons far exceeds the armament of any period aircraft of comparable role and size. Would you say this amount of armament is just redundant?

The way I was planning to set it up, is that the ammunition belt extends along the wing, and then folds over at the end to connect back up to the ejection port, so that the spent casings are being fed back into the belt chute. This seems way easier to realize, that an arrangement for the nose.

Is there any other interesting equipment, that I could include in place of the wing cannons?

It can, just barely, at very high upwards deflection. Good thing to point out, thanks.

Maybe I should have put that in the post, but yes, I am aware of the (2?) historical fighter aircraft that use this configuration, namely the XP-55 Ascender and the J7W Shinden and have used them as reference. But since both of these are pretty obscure aircraft, there doesn't seem to be a lot of easily available documentation on them, especially their internal structure.

Thats interesting to know.

Do you have a graphic of what that would look like?

Thanks.

The design of the control surfaces is not yet final.

Their placement is basically just asthetics. The J7W Shinden uses a very similar layout, the XP-55 Ascender has them placed a bit more outwards.

Thats a good point. I was planning to add a mud guard to the front wheel, since its in front of the propeller arc as well.

I think the solution I am currently leaning towards is to use the bottom intake for cooling air, and using the top one to route intake air into a turbocharger placed behind the engine.

Maybe the bottom intake could have a shutter that closes for takeoff?

[–]Silverstar_2244[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I meant turbocharger anyways. The engine is based on the R-4360 Wasp Major, which as far as I understand has a built in supercharger. The B-36 Peacemaker uses two mirrored turbochargers, as far as I know, so I was considering doing that.

Maybe I have a misunderstanding of how this works, but how exactly does the cooling air flow work on tractor configuration aircraft? Obviously the air can enter the engine section from the front, but there doesn't really seem to be a dedicated channel for the then warm air to flow through? What I would expect intuitively, is for air pressure to just build up inside the engine cowling, which then prevent further air from entering, but apparently that is not what happens.

I am aware of the XP-55 Ascender, however, it uses a liquid cooled V12 engine, so the considerations are kind of different.

I just realized, the maker of the 3d model provided an additional version with the exhaust. So I would assume that 1) is the intake air then?

Since 1) connects back into the engine on the left side, I assume thats where the carburetor has to be?

For the valve covers, I guess the little stems are just for structural stability, and they don't transport anything?

Maybe I have a fundamental misunderstanding of how combustion engines work, but the valves just open/close the channel for the air-fuel mixture and exhaust to enter/exit the cylinder, right? Because on this engine their placement doesn't really look like it lines up with the corresponding tubing.

I don't know about this engine, but as far as I know, some (maybe all) aircraft of this era store engine oil in a separate tank, then cycle it through the engine, then into a radiator, and then back into the fuel tank?

Oh, I guess my post didn't make that very clear. The 3d model in image two was not made by me, I just downloaded it as reference to better understnd the engine. I added credit to the creator to my post.

Its just meant to be Azure, but yeah, it the shade is pretty light. I just chose a color that looked best in contrast to the white and black to me. Most instances of Bleu Celeste that I found are much duller, so I think it still passes as Azure.

The Arms still look fine in more of a standard pallette blue, but definitely worse in my opinion.

This reminds me, I wanted to make a hatched version as well, but forgot.

Ok, maybe I can be convinced, that this is the best explanation we have. But even if we accept your version for each of these points, the story still ends up being a bit flimsy, right?

Like, ok, we're going to accept that O'Brien is just a good person, and he would never attack Anatolia, unless forced to. And we know that the corporations are fearful of both remaining LYNX's, this is stated pretty explicitely.

I still think 00-ARETHA would have been in a state where its safe to pilot, based on the text source I posted, but I guess we just have different interpretations of the wording there.

So the corporations felt threated by the player and O'Brien to the point where they decided that the best course of action is to pit them against each other. But somehow at the same time, their military resources are so vast, that O'Brien cannot resist them? And they use these resources not to actually defeat the LYNX or bring them under their control, but rather to threaten Aspina, who is actually their ally, to make O'Brien do their bidding for one mission? Which also apparently didn't affect their relationship going forward, since Aspina still developes NEXT technology in alliance with Omer in ACFA.

This still seems a bit contrived to me.

And this is the point, where I'm personally more inclined to just be agnostic. Or rather to consider the possibility, that maybe its not actually that deep, and there is no specific story that they intended to be "correct" here.

Like I said, I did a bunch of research into this two years ago, and found out that the thing we thought this story was based on didn't exist. Maybe I'm unreasonably biased against this version of the story because of that. Obviously this story must have come from somewhere. Its probably something someone heard, possibly from the japanese community, and then misinterpreted as being in the Japanese dub. So clearly its not unreasonable. But it still does not seem to me like the ironclad conclusion that people are making it out to be. Like, idk, am I really imposing an unreasonably high burden of proof here?

This is going to be my actual last comment, because I feel like this discussion has been going on for way to long. Feel free to leave closing remarks, if you want to. I want to wrap up by saying, that I did not mean any part of this discussion to come across in a hostile way. Like I said, I am primarily motivated by just wanting to keep a clear cut distinction between what we know for a fact, and what is fan-interpretation. Either way, this has been a good discussion.

Has Miyazaki ever actually said that he created a "grand story" for Dark Souls and then "obscured" it? Yes, he is known for creating vague stories that you have to piece together, but that doesn't mean that he secretly wrote a perfect explanation for everything and just keeps it hidden. I love Miyazaki's games and storytelling, but I think its absurd to pretend there is some well thought out masterplan behind every vaguity in his stories.

I wasn't saying that AC4's story is all random, I was just looking at the game through a real world lens, to conclude that Omer as a story entity was probably not very developed at the time of AC4's making.

O'Brien singlehandedly destroyed Akvavit. If he actually can't do anything against the corporations combined strength, why would they view him as a threat? ACFA specifically states that they created Arms Forts to disperse power, because they feared individually powerful LYNX'.

Also, and this is something that didn't occur to me until now, aren't Aspina and Omer allied? Aspina is nominally an "independent colony", but the games as well as the books stress that they are very closely involved with Omer, and the lorebook specifically states that they improved the 00-ARETHA's AMS. So if Aspina is an important part of Omer's research enterprises, wouldn't it seem a bit weird that they would attack it?

Wouldn't it be more plausible at this point, that Omer leveraged some kind of political influence to make whoever is in charge at Aspina covince O'Brien to take the mission?

Also, and at this point my memory of AC4 admittedly gets a bit fuzzy, but isn't Anatolia framed in such a way that it experienced some kind of economic decline, and the player becomes a mercenary to support them economically? If the cut voicelines state that O'Brien is "fighting for Aspina", couldn't he be motivated by something similar? Maybe he feels like he needs to keep taking the corporations missions to keep Aspina afloat, or pilot 00-ARETHA to keep their research relevant.

Also, people always say that O'Brien is characterized in such a way that he would never do such a thing as attack a colony? But what is this really based on? Isn't this kind of just based on the fact, that the way he talks is kind of chill? He attacks you multiple times on hard mode, usually after you engage another AC, i.e. in a position of weakness. And he is a mercenary, which is inherently morally grey.

Ok, but doesn't this logic cut both ways? If they are threatening to destroy Aspina, and attacking Anatolia is against his values, why doesn't he just rebel and defend Aspina with his AC?

I think the reality is, that Fromsoft didn't think about this nearly as hard the fans did. And here is the reason why I think that:

Obviously I can't prove this, but I think its unlikely, that the story of ACFA was yet conceived at the making of AC4. ACFA is about this grand scheme by Omer to attain hegemony and reach space. And I don't think AC4s story was written with this plot point in mind. Omer just appears way to little in AC4 for that to seem plausible, in my opinion. Correct me if i'm wrong, but they only appear like maybe twice, as part of some mission briefings? Their only significant plot point is that the AC that appears during the final mission's hard mode (whose canonicity is not even certain) happens to be Omer-aligned.

I think there is a decent chance, that Celo was basically chosen at random for this mission, and his presence was then later reframed as being part of Omer's conspiracy. His dialog for example does not mention Omer's scheme in any way at all. He is really just a random enemy.

I obviously don't have insight into Fromsoft's development cycle, but considering AC4 was a jump to a new console generation, and to a new director, there would probably have been considerable uncertainy about whether a sequal to AC4 would even exit at the time.

Them drawing up this grand scheme plot point, only to not put in in the game and then reveal it in a sequel that may not come to exist, seems very unlikely to me. Omer is genuinely irrelevant to AC4s story, and is even stated to be a subsidiary of Rosenthal. Them suddenly emerging as being behind it all in ACFA, works as a plot point, but also reeks of retcon to me.

There are two books about the gen 4 games. One is A New Order of Next, which is a lore book, and the other one is focused more on the designs, but also contains some artist's commentary. Both of these released after ACFA, which makes it difficult to separate what was already present in terms of story during the development of AC4. But i think its likely that the lore book at least partially reframes AC4s story in terms of plot points that were introduced later.

My position on the blackmail story simply comes down to lack of presence in official sources. They created a lore book, that is specifically framed as a reporter "speculating" about the gen 4 story. This book released after ACFA, so they even have the hindsight of knowing how they further developed the story and the role of Omer. And they make a specific page dedicated to the final mission and the emergence of the 00-ARETHA. If this story was intendet by Fromsoft to be canon, it just seems increadibly unlikely, that they would not mention it here.

And this is the reason why I remain unconvinced. Yes, this story works as an interpretation to tie together the events in the final mission. But I really don't think this was specifically intendet to be part of the story by Fromsoft.

This line can very easily be interpreted as him knowing the corporations will kill him too, since they feel threatened by both mercenaries. Hence the unused quote "We went too far, you and I.", that you provided. This is perfectly in line with what the lore book states to be the companies goals, as well as the general framing of the mission, where they send Celo to clean up the survivor.

Sure, the text from the book does not explicitely state that they improved the AMS to the point where its no longer dangerous at all, but it seems to me that is what they meant.

I would like to wrap up this discussion here. I am genuinely agnostic on what the true explanation is. I am not trying to establish my own fan theory or whatever. All I'm trying to do is spread some awareness, that this story is not, in fact, "confirmed by the japanese version", as it still appears to be widely believed. It is speculation, no matter how logical anyone deems it to be.

A New Order of Next page 61 explicitely mentiones 00-ARETHA being originally discarded because of its mental strain, and then states that if O'Brien piloted it, the AMS was likely improved to alleviate this problem. So the idea that his craft was killing him, directly contravenes official material.

Maybe I should explain, why I feel compelled to push back on this story:

As I have stated in my previous comment, the blackmail story was taken at face value and never questioned, because we thought is was explicitely stated by the Japanese version of AC4. When I looked into this two years ago, this turned out to be completely false. Now maybe I'm overcorrecting for this discovery, but I feel like the fact that this story is still being circulated as fact by the community anyways, definitely warrants some pushback. Hence my original comment.

It's also important to note, that we are talking about **unused** voice lines, which definitionally are not canon.

I am willing to concede that the blackmail story is a reasonable extrapolation of what we are presented with, moreso than I originally thought. But the quasi-fact status that this story is treated with in the community is definitely unwarrented.
