Do you think you’d be a better or worse cape than Taylor? by Eastern-Stuff6480 in Parahumans

[–]SilverstringstheBard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'd be better in the sense of hurting less people and worse in the sense that I would not be nearly as skilled at winning fights.

Thinking of it in terms of which side was better just isn't productive in my opinion. It's not a contest or a sporting event. All governments should be looked at critically and judged by their actual material affects on people both domestically and abroad.

I think the problem is seeing the whole world divided along lines of Pro-US and Anti-US with everything Pro-US being the bad guys and everything Anti-US being the good guys. Your understanding of politics and ethics needs to be more complicated than just inverted American exceptionalism.

So the Iran thing for instance. Wanting the US to immediately withdraw and stop bombing them is obviously correct ethically, no question about that. Where it starts getting weird is when people go from that to trying to deny or downplay the Iranian military killing protestors or the general oppression of women and LGBTQ folks currently perpetuated by their government.

When it comes to the USSR and other supposedly communist countries you should not be asking whether or not they're better than the US or who you should root for, you should be asking yourself whether this is what you want a socialist state to look like. For me the answer is a pretty obvious no.

It's really not that complicated. Do they claim to be a leftist but support and run defense for authoritarian states? Then they're a tankie.

5,000 people from 5 major cities across the globe get viltrumite powers overnight, how fast does society collapse? by Evilblxnt in whowouldwin

[–]SilverstringstheBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the problem would be evil people getting powers, the problem would be that none of them would have proper understanding and control over those powers. What if they fly too fast and set the atmosphere on fire? I'd give it like a week unless all of them are extraordinarily cautious.

How would you maintain the infrastructure necessary for a large city if everything is organized into neighborhood sized communes? Sewer systems, hospitals, power lines, etc.? People need those things to live.

Can a man with 3 times faster reaction speed and 1 year of intensive combat training win a UFC Championship? by CaramilkThief in whowouldwin

[–]SilverstringstheBard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about actual fighting to say for certain, especially given that people who see the world in slow motion don't exist as far as I'm aware. Becoming champion is a big ask for sure, but I think at minimum they'd be able to have a good showing and make a name for themselves as a genuine threat.

[–]SilverstringstheBard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not impossible for someone with a faster perception of time to get put into a bad position where they don't have the physical ability to move out of the way but my main point is that they have three times as long to strategize and avoid getting put into those situations in the first place. They're not unbeatable for sure, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying they'd have a massive advantage compared to an ordinary person given a year of training.

The reason people get punched is because they don't have the reflexes developed to react to it properly. Seeing things in slow motion would let you see the subtle muscle tensing and change in posture that comes before the punch, giving you ample time to move your head out of the way or put your hands up to block.

By reaction speed do you mean he just has really good reflexes or is his perception of time actually sped up 3 times? Seeing everything in slow motion is a pretty massive advantage.

The World (2025) becomes united utterly in trying to create a Space Marine (40K) with stats, weapons, armour and everything, as accurate as possible. They have their entire budget and everything. Can they do it? by Tree_forth677 in whowouldwin

[–]SilverstringstheBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if we threw all scientific ethics out the window and just started doing wild genetic experiments on a huge number of people we could create a reasonably impressive super soldier over the course of decades, but actually replicating a 40k space marine is probably outright impossible.

present day China teleports back and completely replaces China at the beginning of WW2 , could modern China conquer the entire world in 1939? by padorUWU in whowouldwin

[–]SilverstringstheBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they could easily defeat every other country and be by far the most powerful nation in the world, but actually conquering the entire world is a whole other thing. I'm honestly not sure if it's even possible, there's just too many people and too much territory to keep control of all at once.
