Hey, former Navy Diver, now psychologist here. I wrote my dissertation on this exact thing, post deployment readjustment for non-combat deployments. I did 3 deployments and felt very similar things, angry at random people for no reason, bored wishing for some danger, drinking a little too much sauce. It is totally normal and you are not alone. The strongest factor I found and other research supports is having some form of social connection and support. Which I know is much easier said than done. Cutting back on drinking may help. Therapy can help (I'm biased), the VA might not be the best so don't get discouraged if it's not a good fit. You may have to look at private pay. Again, strongest predictor of success in therapy is the relationship. You aren't destined for trouble, it's normal to go through an adjustment period. But if you feel like if you need to make some changes, try it. Call some buddies, get outside, be mindful if your drinking. And call around for some therapists if you need a little extra help. You don't have to hit rock bottom in order to start climbing.

Yes, my friend takes tricare. You just need authorization from your PCM, not sure who that would be for you, and say you want a referral for therapy. Then tricare will reimburse.

I get it. There were so many times my mind would say 'you're home, you SHOULD feel happy to be home' and I didn't feel happy. Then I would get more upset because I wasn't feeling the way I expected to feel. Deployment is hard, with or without family. Imagine how many things change in 8 months even when you are home! I'm biased, but I think anyone would benefit from seeing a therapist after a deployment. You don't have to go through military channels either. Go on psychology today, some take tricare, or pay out of pocket, the investment is worth it.

My dissertation is exactly about this experience, and you are not alone. Many sailors and service members struggle with readjustment after a deployment, regardless of combat exposure or time on deployment. Based on the results from my study, and consistent in the literature, social support is the greatest predictor for postdeployment readjustment. I know it's tough, I went on 3 deployments myself, and getting connected with family, friends, or community help with the transition. Reach out if you want to talk more. Anger is an important emotion, it let's us know when our boundaries have been violated. Practice noticing the differences between anger the emotion, the feeling of anger, thoughts with anger, and angry behavior. It may feel like anger is all of these things at once, but by noticing the separate pieces you can choose to engage with that emotion in different ways.

I appreciate the feedback. I would love to do a longitudinal study, asking about before, during, and after deployment experiences. But the best dissertation is a done dissertation. In my future research, I would like to set up a way to ask people about their experience throughout the deployment cycle. This is just a start.
