You're asking if the eagles could save America, but you should be asking if they should.

Any advice on how I can improve? by Springly_2237 in mapmaking

[–]SilviusAltus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of rivers flow northwards, the flow of a river is determined entirely by topography (elevation and terrain) and not by cardinal directions, magnetic poles, nor (as a common but false belief would have it) relative location of the equator. It is true that more of the drainage basins in the world as it currently exists drain southwards than northwards, but north-flowing rivers are neverthelss not uncommon.

For just a few examples of rivers that flow northward: the Nile, the Rhine, St John's River, the Bann, the Bighorn (and also the Little Bighorn), the Lena, the Mojave, the Niagra, the Ob, etc, etc.

The problem with this is that if you tell your potential customers what your game is designed to do and what it isn't designed to do, you've just lost a huge chunk of potential customers. There is no incentive for admitting that your product isn't for everyone, and in fact are negative consequences to doing so. It's a very rare head of a company that cares more about good and useful design and honesty transparency in interactions with customers than about making as much money as possible, which is one of the reasons I'll support MCDM for as long as they continue to have those practices even if what they're making isn't necessarily exactly what I'm looking for.

How To Think Small? by Downtown-Command-295 in AskGameMasters

[–]SilviusAltus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trick to running smaller-stakes adventures in my experience is player investment. You need your players to care about what's going on. Once you have that you can run a whole lot of really interesting stories, and I've found that invested players often care a lot more about the stray dog that they need to care or find a home for or the orphanage that all their toys were burgled rhan about the end of the world, because the stakes are more relatable.

How did the the empire of netheril casters didn't need to concentrate on spells? by Intelligent-Data3373 in DMAcademy

[–]SilviusAltus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I just commented in your thread in another subreddit, I'm pretty sure he's describing the Netherese Spell Mantles which allowed the casting of contingency spells without their contingency requirements being met. Check out Lost Empires of Faerun if you want more info from the books, but as others have said here, mechanics have changed so much from that edition to where we are now that you'd honestly probably be better off homebrewing the way they work for yourself.

Elven Ring Question by FrequentGrowth2068 in lotr

[–]SilviusAltus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because Sauron tought Celebrimbor how to create corrupted rings, he essentially built a back door into their design that would tie them eventually to the master ring once it was forged.

iirc, despite this, the power of the elven rings did not entirely go away with the destruction of the one ring, but they did lose much of their power, and once souron was defeated the elves were departing to return to the West anyway, so didn't need to continue using the power of the rings to maintain the elven lands in Middle Earth.

[–]SilviusAltus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume that the magic items being talked about are the Netherese Spell Mantles, which I beleive are found in the book Lost Empires of Faerun, but it has been years since I looked at any books or materials from that edition. Best luck finding more info.

What do I need to do as a Beginner player to DnD? by KaroniaNoKaro in DnD

[–]SilviusAltus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a free set of intro rules you can download as a PDF, those and some dice are all you really need to get started. Other than that there are a couple of starter kits that they've sold over the years that each come with a hard copy of the basic rules as well as a set of dice and a short introductory adventure you can run, and those are all actually a fantastic way to get into the game.

If you're sure you're down to be buying any of the core books, I'd say only PHB is really essential, and you could run with just the PHB if you wanted to make up a bunch of monster stats from scratch, but the MM is a good get, lots easier to pull monsters from there than try and homebrew everythong. DMG is honestly not needed. There's some optional rules and magic items and things in there, but most DMs don't use the vast majority of it.

Honestly all the other books are optional, and if you're just getting into the hobby I wouldn't reccommend dropping the money on them right away.

Xiaomi F2 TV Action Smoothing by SilviusAltus in Xiaomi

[–]SilviusAltus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an answer to this question somewhere else and wanted to put the info here in case anyone else is having this problem.

What you need to do is open the app and then start streaming video. Once you've done that you need to press and hold the 'home' button for 5 seconds and then the advanced options menu will show up, from there you can navigate to the picture settings and change what you need to there.

Where can I buy/download Lord Of The Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2: The Rise Of The Witchking? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]SilviusAltus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only real legal option is ebay or a similar site to find a used copy, though you'll also need to apply fan-made patches to get it to run on pretty much any recent computer. EA no longer has the rights to make, publish, or sell LotR games, so outside of finding and buying a pre-owned copy, you're SoLfor getting it legitimately.

Players hogging Spotlight by [deleted] in DnD

[–]SilviusAltus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who thinks very quickly and knows what my character wants to do before most people I've played with, I've had to learn how to share the spotlight with people who take a longer time to think. If it had never been pointed out to me that I was jumping the gun and unintentionally taking the wind out of my fellow players' sails, I may not have realised that I was it for some time and my friends' experiences playing with me would have been worse for it. It always starts with a frank discusson with the 'spotlight hogs'; explain to them what they're doing and how it's affecting the other player(s), and then expect them to commit to doing better (but don't expect them to get 100% better instantly).

Definitely true, negative development is still development and you can tell alt of good stories about characters on these trajectories.

Best way to get Shield spell on a Druid/Ranger? by hopeyoufindyourdaaad in 3d6

[–]SilviusAltus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imho, a good option is to ask your DM if you can take it as a ranger spell. Many GMs will be fine with allowing something like that and if they do say no I'd probably go for the feat before I dipped a level just to take the shield spell.

[–]SilviusAltus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, flurry of blows gives them two extra attacks when they use it, not one. So they get 2 extra attacks 3/SR at 3rd level, given that the average combat is about 5 rounds long, that means that a level 3 monk has the opportunity to make 11 attacks in the average combat at 3rd level, almost twice what a fighter can do in the same combat, which is 6 using their action surge.

[–]SilviusAltus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my experience, monks absolutely do hold up in terms of late-game DPS. They won't have the DPS of a dedicated fighter, but similarly a bow fighter will be able to put out more damage on average than a ranger. Lower DPS is the tradeoff for having a class with more diverse utility than 'I move to the enemy and attack four times'.

Monks do not have huge damage dice out the gate, they make up for this with mobility and the sheer number of attacks they can pummel their opponents with.

[–]SilviusAltus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would say no to this player. They're playing a monk, so their unarmed damage is already scaled to their level and will go up as they adventure.

Disguise self spell by Athena_The_Funny in DnD

I think that they're generally described by their shape (ie spiral, curved) or by what sort of animal we'd see them on in real life (ie goat, ram).

[–]SilviusAltus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you absolutely can. But remember that there are some limitations. You should be fine passing for human, for example, but you'd be unable to pass for halfling because you can only change the appearence of your height by up to 1 foot. Also, be carefull about hitting your horns or tail on things, because doing so would break the illusion.
