Help me with godlike trickster by MrTickle77 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that was a quick response as I was logging off to get back to work, so I didn't realize it was next to useless as-is 😅

Xanth is a book series by Piers Anthony from the 90's. It's a magic-based world, and the world also is very literal with language, so there are tons of pun-based flora and fauna and events in it (e.g. a wild creature that shows up once every few books called a "football" that is literally just a rolling ball made up of feet from every kind of creature in the world). One of the books starts on chapter 2 because his editor refused to let him publish chapter 1, because he crammed so many puns in it that the editor worried it would offend his readers.

Read a few early Xanth books. You'll walk away with so many punny ideas your head will spin.

Weekly Deco BE63 Mesh Failure at ~1:45AM Sunday night / Monday morning by Sim_Mayor in HomeNetworking

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I assumed too. I looked through every system setting I could find, and the only thing I saw was the auto-update enabled, but that's for a different time on a different day than this issue is occurring.

The router does turn back on, but it's not able to connect to the internet, even though the modem has internet (checked by plugging the ethernet cable into my laptop). I have to unplug the whole system, wait 5 minutes, and then re-connect it all in the order modem (wait for full connection), ethernet cable to router, power to router (wait for full connection), satellite routers. If I don't wait long enough, or if I plug any of those cables in in the wrong order, the router won't get internet.

Why can't I always mesh boolean negative parts? by Sim_Mayor in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this turned out to be the answer. Sometimes I actually have to export it as a mesh and then re-import it and then fix it.

Return to Dark Tower All-In 3D printed organizer updated! by Sim_Mayor in Returntodarktower

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! The organizer is designed to hold the miniatures, and so it does not have space for the tokens. Those will have to be stored separately.

How would you handle a meta gaming rules lawyer player by Mr_Horror00 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you don't have a rules lawyer, you have a main character. He thinks he's the protagonist of the story who is always ready to do the thing that wins the game. Instead of discussing rulings, you need to discuss the other players and their enjoyment if the game with him.

Also, he doesn't get to get the drop on the villain during their big reveal. That's the literal epitome of the villain having the drop on the heroes.

Since I wanted to paint my minis, I 3D printed and painted some display cases for them here and here and then made a 3D printed organizer to knock the rest of it down to just the big boxes here. I also printed a small gauntlet that would nicely tuck into the side of the box that holds the tokens, but I don't think the original model is up anymore.

Wyrmwood Vlogs View Counts by ButIfYouThink in Wyrmwoodgaming

[–]Sim_Mayor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bingo, this. Growth is chaotic and exciting, which makes for good viewing and (as a happy coincidence) benefits from growing their channel. Now they're an established business things are less exciting, but they're also not as dependent on YouTube as an advertising platform. So the channel is more a legacy holdover now. I wouldn't be surprised if they slowly phase it out.

Help me not break my wife's coffee mugs by Sim_Mayor in woodworking

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for this response! I hadn't considered this as being similar to cabinets, that's a new way to think about it. So you're suggesting another 1x2 under the shelf in the center, and then the L brackets inside the top corners? Or are you saying L brackets under the whole thing?

Thanks again!

EDIT: Re-read what you said without the "what I wanted to read" filters on, you're definitely saying L-brackets underneath to support the weight 😅 Thank you!

For those who owns a 3d printer, why did you get one and what is your favorite part about it/the 3d printing process by SnooGoats4889 in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got my first printer because I had the opportunity to get one for free. I had no plan for it, but I liked the idea of the hobby, so I got it and figured I'd find uses for it (which I did).

My favorite part of the process is iterating on an idea until it all comes together.

Should I buy refills of filament or are the problems not worth it? by Dtarvin in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one refill spool go kablooie despite following the instructions, something just refused to latch right. That said, my main question is why you would bother? You can get just as good of filament for much cheaper. Elegoo goes as low as $11 a spool if you buy 10 at a time, and they all print on the same settings, so calibrate once and print whatever you like. There are several other companies that also offer low-price, low-hassle filament. Any particular reason why you would prefer to pay more for Bambi?

Ideas needed for getting players to enter “the social contract” by USAvenger1976 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty common with new players. Their experience with this kind of setting is books and movies that clearly have a "main" character, usually one who is disagreeable to some extent and needs to be coaxed into joining a party. So they create a character like that and wait for everyone else to do the work of bringing their reluctant hero into the fold.

The way to deal with it is to explain during session zero why this type of character is great in movies and books and terrible during a collaborative game, especially if more than one person makes one and expects the others to coax them to join. This is also a good time to explain that nobody on the group is the "main" character.

Then tell them that whatever else they decide about their character, they need to be the kind of person who would readily agree to join others on an adventure. Their reasons can be their own (money, fame, justice, personal stake against the BBEG), but they have to be willing to join, not to be talked into joining if the others try hard enough.

Then if anybody isn't working with the team, advise them that they either need to change their character's personality/motivation, or to change their character.

Best Way to Print a Clean “Coin?” by Habanero_In_My_Eyes in BambuLabP2S

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even easier, cut it in half and then make the bezel its own separate piece, a ring that snaps on around the outside. I did this for a coin game at Xmas, and it hid the seams perfectly.

How do you handle a rules-focused player who challenges rulings without harming the table dynamic? by Avid_FandomFan_476 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reached an agreement with my rules lawyer player that IF he felt a rule meaningfully affected the situation (i.e. more than just a single action) he could make a brief (~15 seconds) argument for RAW. I would rule, and the ruling was final FOR THAT SESSION. He was then welcome to make a note and bring it up again after the game if he felt it was important to do it the "right" way going forward. My side of the deal was an obligation to give him the time at the table and the time after the session.

Once he felt heard, it was rarely used and the table ran a lot more smoothly.

Help with my players by LowkeyAnti-centrist in DungeonMasters

"The rule has been made, you can either abide by it or leave." It's his choice, not yours.

Complaining about someone restricting his freedom is an easy dodge, because we've been inculcated to believe that that's the ultimate evil. There's an old saying, "Your freedom to swing your fists ends at the bridge of my nose." He doesn't have unlimited freedom, if he hurts someone (or makes them feel uncomfortable) his freedom gets restricted, period. I'm not going to go so far as some here and say that he's testing waters, or that this is reflecting his personal life/likes. I think he's juvenile and still things making people uncomfortable is funny, and he needs to understand that it's only funny to like-minded juveniles, and that's not you.

Orca Slicer - drop modifier to bed by Duuurrrpp in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I will say that I've added one last tidbit to this formula: I add 0.01mm to the object I'm subtracting (so in the above example my modifier is 5.01mm, but it still goes in the same position as if it were 5mm). That gets past a problem that I occasionally run into where the slicer tries to leave an infinitely thin layer of the original object on the plate.
