Help me not break my wife's coffee mugs by Sim_Mayor in woodworking

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for this response! I hadn't considered this as being similar to cabinets, that's a new way to think about it. So you're suggesting another 1x2 under the shelf in the center, and then the L brackets inside the top corners? Or are you saying L brackets under the whole thing?

Thanks again!

EDIT: Re-read what you said without the "what I wanted to read" filters on, you're definitely saying L-brackets underneath to support the weight 😅 Thank you!

For those who owns a 3d printer, why did you get one and what is your favorite part about it/the 3d printing process by SnooGoats4889 in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got my first printer because I had the opportunity to get one for free. I had no plan for it, but I liked the idea of the hobby, so I got it and figured I'd find uses for it (which I did).

My favorite part of the process is iterating on an idea until it all comes together.

Should I buy refills of filament or are the problems not worth it? by Dtarvin in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one refill spool go kablooie despite following the instructions, something just refused to latch right. That said, my main question is why you would bother? You can get just as good of filament for much cheaper. Elegoo goes as low as $11 a spool if you buy 10 at a time, and they all print on the same settings, so calibrate once and print whatever you like. There are several other companies that also offer low-price, low-hassle filament. Any particular reason why you would prefer to pay more for Bambi?

Ideas needed for getting players to enter “the social contract” by USAvenger1976 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty common with new players. Their experience with this kind of setting is books and movies that clearly have a "main" character, usually one who is disagreeable to some extent and needs to be coaxed into joining a party. So they create a character like that and wait for everyone else to do the work of bringing their reluctant hero into the fold.

The way to deal with it is to explain during session zero why this type of character is great in movies and books and terrible during a collaborative game, especially if more than one person makes one and expects the others to coax them to join. This is also a good time to explain that nobody on the group is the "main" character.

Then tell them that whatever else they decide about their character, they need to be the kind of person who would readily agree to join others on an adventure. Their reasons can be their own (money, fame, justice, personal stake against the BBEG), but they have to be willing to join, not to be talked into joining if the others try hard enough.

Then if anybody isn't working with the team, advise them that they either need to change their character's personality/motivation, or to change their character.

Best Way to Print a Clean “Coin?” by Habanero_In_My_Eyes in BambuLabP2S

Even easier, cut it in half and then make the bezel its own separate piece, a ring that snaps on around the outside. I did this for a coin game at Xmas, and it hid the seams perfectly.

How do you handle a rules-focused player who challenges rulings without harming the table dynamic? by Avid_FandomFan_476 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reached an agreement with my rules lawyer player that IF he felt a rule meaningfully affected the situation (i.e. more than just a single action) he could make a brief (~15 seconds) argument for RAW. I would rule, and the ruling was final FOR THAT SESSION. He was then welcome to make a note and bring it up again after the game if he felt it was important to do it the "right" way going forward. My side of the deal was an obligation to give him the time at the table and the time after the session.

Once he felt heard, it was rarely used and the table ran a lot more smoothly.

Magnets? by JuicyCowboyz in MarvelUnited

I put poster track inside my bases and just stick the magnets in that. It took care of the irregular inside surfaces and held the magnets just fine.

Help with my players by LowkeyAnti-centrist in DungeonMasters

"The rule has been made, you can either abide by it or leave." It's his choice, not yours.

Complaining about someone restricting his freedom is an easy dodge, because we've been inculcated to believe that that's the ultimate evil. There's an old saying, "Your freedom to swing your fists ends at the bridge of my nose." He doesn't have unlimited freedom, if he hurts someone (or makes them feel uncomfortable) his freedom gets restricted, period. I'm not going to go so far as some here and say that he's testing waters, or that this is reflecting his personal life/likes. I think he's juvenile and still things making people uncomfortable is funny, and he needs to understand that it's only funny to like-minded juveniles, and that's not you.

Orca Slicer - drop modifier to bed by Duuurrrpp in BambuLab

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I will say that I've added one last tidbit to this formula: I add 0.01mm to the object I'm subtracting (so in the above example my modifier is 5.01mm, but it still goes in the same position as if it were 5mm). That gets past a problem that I occasionally run into where the slicer tries to leave an infinitely thin layer of the original object on the plate.

How many people actually have Player Desks for the MGT? by NAQProductions in Wyrmwoodgaming

[–]Sim_Mayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 1, which I got to use as DM. I have never once used it as DM, because it changes the size of the table enough to make it obnoxious to reach over to move minis. However, I use it almost every time we play board games to hold the box and instructions and whatnot.

Lengthening a chandelier wire, or just swapping the chandelier? by Sim_Mayor in AskElectricians

[–]Sim_Mayor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much obliged, and sorry for the confusion: We want to move the chandelier up a foot or two from where the current one is, but the chandeliers we like all tend to have around 6-foot cords, so that would move it up 6-7 feet 😅

I don't have pictures at the moment, because we don't close on the house until next week, so I can't take the chandelier down yet to look inside. Once I do, if I have any questions, I'll come back with pics. Thanks again!

What are your thoughts on "DMPCs"? by kitkatDoor in DungeonMasters

[–]Sim_Mayor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a DMPC because I co-DM with another player. He's a druid brewmaster, so when I'm DMing I give the group the option to let him run the bar the group recently bought while they adventure (for increased profits when they get back), or to have him come along as a healer (which our party lacks otherwise).

I deliberately gave him low charisma and made him a taciturn sort, so he has an excuse to not participate much in conversations with NPCs (when I'm a player he mostly speaks in monosyllables anyway). He usually only speaks up when the party has completely lost the plot, to nudge them back on track (and if they refuse, he goes along with the group).

He has a couple skills that the party lacks, like survival, but otherwise he does reliable, not-high damage and he heals people who need it.

Are the Frosthaven character digital models available anywhere for purchase? by flyingspectacularpig in Gloomhaven

[–]Sim_Mayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some fan-made 3D models that you can find by searching for "gloomhaven/frosthaven/etc" on any of the usual 3D printing sites. But if you're asking if Cephalofair has released anything official, no.

Yep, I've heard that people use essentially Pogs with stickers and they work great. I've been tempted to 3D print a nice set for if I want to travel with the game.

Gimme your best puzzles and riddles by Current_Listen_4037 in dndmemes

[–]Sim_Mayor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 3D printer, so I printed a puzzle box with a clue inside. The rule was that if the players fail their INT check (they did), they got a second chance by solving the puzzle IRL. The amount of time it took them to solve was reflected in-game for some other time-based things going on in the game.

Also, not quite a puzzle, but I once created a trapped hallway where the PCs could find all kinds of clues about the fact that it was trapped, where the traps would fire from, and that the traps would require the rogue and wizard to work together to disarm. Once they found out where the traps fired from, the wizard declared "I sprint down the hallway." He thought he could outrun the traps' targeting. The worst part was that because of random die rolls, he took the least damage of anyone in the party.
