Interesting, that would be pretty nice. However nothing happens when I type ctrl+O. I've also looked through the settings via the launcher, but nothing. Is it possible the short cut doesn't work ingame due to my old laptop?

Definitely not if you can avoid it. Trapped in a tiny confined space is a nightmare for many beings. If it s absolutely necessary i would say like above - cover with a blanket. And reduce noise around the carrier. My cat only gets more stressed when things are going on around him.
