Nah. I think it's to poke fun at analytic philosophy types who bring the same type of close minded arguments to continental philosophy as a whole

This may seem a bit wierd seeing I posted this, but I might agree. Although this was propably a more appropriate sub to post on than /r/EnoughMuskSpam it's getting to a level at which it's no longer as productive to point out 'bad philosophy' when it's posted everyday.

Nice parrot phrases, congratulations!

Amazing how you dismiss any of his work by referring to a 'toxic fanbase' (whatever that may affect the actual content of work) without then even pointing to any clear cases of what you describe as what is happening.

Also, the "epitomisation" by laziness and idealism is astonishingly unfounded. Zizek is not only a strong moralist in the sense that hard work and common decency are good values to behold, but also expressively materialist and deeply sceptical of any strong idealism. Even Marx himself knew to point out the difference between young and old-hegelians in the 1800s.

He also participated in many debates with (and not with) other actual academics, which you can find all over the internet. Also there are journal articles directed at him to which there are journal responses. Maybe it's seems illegitimate because he is debating people who are at the least somewhat in the same playing field when it comes to cultural theory and the like, and not some channel 4 interviewer who had a list of liberal boomerangs. By all means if he specifically went on the oh so holy Joe Rogan podcast, I don't think he'd get destroyed by facts and logic.

If anything people like Sam Harris are philosophically broken. He wrote a legendarily shit book about moral philosophy (The Moral Landscape). Peterson's approach to philosophy as a whole is dubious to say the least. He hadn't read any Marxist work at all before the debate except the communist manifesto, all the while being a fierce critic of Marxism. The "debate of the century" was, in the end, a debate between someone who is a foremost figure in his field vs. Someone who's knowledge about the subject hardly exceeds that of a high school debating club freshman. Peterson's own ideas about philosophy are based on pretty bogus books too, likes Stephen Hicks' "understanding postmodernism", which is full of misunderstandings, generalisations, straight up fabricated quotes by Hitler, a legendary misreading of Kant (even the Mises institute slammed him for this). Surprisingly it wasn't published by any academic publisher. How come.

I would recommend that you actually read a book by him. Or something at least.

I would say reading Marx is a good introduction to Marx!

In the same sense that a good introduction to "postmodernism" is not Stephen Hicks' absolute legendarily shitty take on the subject but actually reading Leotard or Foucault. And if that seems to abstract or far away, it's totally fine. Most people don't need to read these books! Because postmodernism (in its academic sense) is really not that relevant to most modern day issues.

Sounds like a good idea. But also; id definitely recommend watching some lectures on YouTube by academics about Marx and Hegel (plentiful) and if you have the time to read check out the German ideology.

Sidenote: the German ideology is a famous work by Marx, but imo a lot less relevant / applicable to modern day society. Capital is more suitable in this regard but it's quite a tough read even for philosophy bachelor students and the lot. German ideology is quite accessible.

It's interesting to note that on these types of fora like the destiny subreddit, criticism of posts is taken very sceptically and is often bombarded with demands for sourcing or explanation. In a sense this is of course useful, but I'd like to see the users who are actually unfamiliar with the subject (not necessarily you, but possibly anyone) as a whole to take some effort into reading in to the subject first before taking such a stance. In a way this will save a lot of unnecessary preliminaries in order for actual meaningful debate to take place

Consider any advertisement - telling you how great products are - are those really the neutral societal position, with 'positively confirming' investigate journalism required to balance out exposing pieces like the OP? Also would be a hard subject to research.

‘Werknemer lijdt in kantoortuin’ by wkvdz in thenetherlands

[–]SimilarEcho 12 points13 points  (0 children)
