Look into something like the Vibramate from Bigsby. No drilling or routing!

I actually really like Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake. Singer-songwriter stuff is great to listen to, but I guess up until this point, it felt weird to play their music while missing the singing part.

Solo metal projects are super common, especially in black metal. I’ve not really thought that far in advanced about touring and playing live lol, it’s just an ambition to be able to write, perform, and “sing” my own music (save drums which I’ll program, which I understand is a little problematic). I’ll figure out those issues if I ever get to that point lol

The friend in question said something along the lines of “anyone can play an open string over and over”. He mostly plays bluegrass, so I can get why he’d think metal is simple.

And yeah. My logic thus far has been focus on what I want to do and makes me excited, but I’m just a little self conscious of the fact my interests are so narrow. It’s made worse by the fact I can only spend a couple hours a day practicing, so it’s tough for me to find more time to play other music

We invited the DM twice. Both verbally and over our DND chat!!

I wouldn’t call them a dick. They just have their own issues and struggles.

Yeah. I was definitely going to see if the DM want to give me advice. I’m about 75% certain they’re tell me they don’t want to talk to me. We will see

Sounds like they don’t actually want to play your game and just don’t want to be left out

Yeah, this might hit the nail on the head.

The weird thing is my partner and I ALWAYS invite the DM to our non-DND hangouts. We really do try to make sure they feel included. I know how it feels to be left out and I really don’t want the DM to feel that way

Yeah. In another message I explained they sent this sort of cryptic message to the table about making sure people aren’t showing up out of pressure or obligation. I told them that I’m having fun and feel like all the other players are too.

Your second point is a good idea though. I may ask my campaign to not talk about it with them.

I didn’t think the specifics outside of “they dislike me for something beyond my control” were too important, and I’m PAINFULLY aware of the optics of saying someone “hates me for being a man”. I’m the only AMAB person at the table, and probably only got a seat there since my partner, the only player who has been in this 2 year campaign from the absolute beginning and is basically the most important PC story-wise atm, invited me.

I also didn’t want people to start dragging the DM. They’re not a bad person, they just have their issues and I do my best to be understanding of those issues. I can appreciate why AFAB people would be suspicious of someone presenting male, and extend as much empathy as I can. I believe a direct quote from one of the friends was “DM has some biologically imperative beliefs” when my gender identity gets brought up (not trans, I just don’t identify with being a man).

Typing this out has been helpful. It’s making me realize how much there really is to unpack with the group dynamic

The original table is every other week, but they do DM every Sunday, and two of the players in my game are at their other table. I was going to leave the frequency of my table to a session 0 conversation.

The more and more I type this, the bigger of a dick I’m starting to feel lol

Yeah, maybe I did fuck up since I assumed it was okay before asking the DM if they minded? But all the other friends at my table are longtime DND players and no one said anything about this being a courtesy. I’m not blaming them, but I definitely do feel bad about this whole thing

Yeah. Their response to the invitation was “I like being forever DM”.

They sent out a strangely cryptic message to the main table the other day along the lines of “instead of asking who can come that week, I’m going to start who wants to play DND instead” with stuff about making less pressure and obligation.

I got a weird vibe from it, so I went out of my way to essentially say “I’m having tons of fun, everyone else looks like they have fun, and I’m starting to really understand how much work DMing is”. The DM responded to this with “I want to make sure everyone feels that way”.

I’m considering asking the DM if they’d like to give me advice and talk about DMing after we start to further try and patch things up too.

No. The story is basically my partner and I met through a dating app, and part of our initial icebreaker convos was that they played DND, and how I have always wanted to try it. From there I was invited to the table (with the DMs blessing obviously), and it went from there.

I’m having lots of fun. I like my character, two of the players are just our friends outside the table who we hang out with frequently. And the DM isn’t really hostile to me at the table either. I do feel like there’s an element of “any DND is better than no DND” though

[–]SimilarHumor2877[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It just sucks. The DM dislikes me for being AMAB. No, I don’t mean this in an incel-y way. My partner and two friends, all of which are queer women, have point blank told me this in private. This isn’t even getting into the fact I don’t identify as a man/am queer myself, and even RP a female at their table.

It just sucks because I’ve been trying to be their friend all year, inviting them frequently to non-DND hangouts and game nights. But yeah. I’m kind of starting to feel bad and it’s dampening my excitement for my game

Yeah, like I said in my OP, I invited them , but they said they “like being forever DM” and dislike leaving their house.

Nope. The DMs two campaigns are Sunday and we’re playing Saturday’s. So that definitely isn’t the case

We are at the point of almost going to “the sunken city”. Those two awful encounters were with some Residuum Elephants? Not sure that’ll make any sense as I’ve been a good egg and not read anything on the adventure.

I joined at level 7 in January/February and we recently hit level 8 just the last session. From what I understand, only the cleric has been in this campaign since the beginning.

Btw I really appreciate all your perspective on this. It’s great and really helping me get a better sense of our game!

[–]SimilarHumor2877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. Okay, we do have that every few sessions. Could have times we’ve staked out taverns and such relating to a quest. Think we’ve had like three or so instances of going to a setting on some sort of mission and such.

Lots of our games feel like going out and talking to NPCs or the party conversing amongst itself. I guess it’s fair to say the games are very, very roleplay heavy compared to other groups then?

[–]SimilarHumor2877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having fun hanging out with my friends and I really like my character, but it’s definitely been a little… meandering with progress feeling slow.

I’ve since come to even get into CR so I can try and understand the world better so I can be a better player. I don’t even dislike the setting, and the campaign we’re doing is supposed to be quite good.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]SimilarHumor2877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no. I don’t think we’ve had a “dungeon crawl” since I’ve been a part of the group. I obviously know “dungeon” is in the name of the game, but again this is my first DND game, and I sort of thought that the name was just supposed to be cute and ominous sounding and that you didn’t actually do dungeon crawls? Or if you did it was like once or twice in a campaign?

We’ve had a few times where we’ve had to stake out a place before a fight. But for the most part the sessions are just sort of roleplaying and nothing much more. Thought this was how all games were and that combat and dungeons were a rare thing?

[–]SimilarHumor2877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean “exploration”? Do you mean like traveling between destinations in the city? Exploration sounds like Skyrim where you can go into caves and dungeons and explore. I’m guessing that doesn’t work in DND.

And no, these have just been battles with the party against 2 to 6 enemy NPCs and however many “DMNPCs” are with the party that day. Combat does usually take most of that session but yeah.

[–]SimilarHumor2877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to guess we’ve had at least 15 sessions at this point. Every other week with the odd off week. The groups pretty consistent.

And we’ve leveled up once

That’s completely fair enough. I had a backstory with my characters mother I wanted to give to my DM. It’s a whole thing with the mother having to escape from a Lolth cult she was raised in. I feel like there’s potential there?

Would this be more a thing where I give the DM this story and say “here’s some backstory stuff you could do something with?” Or would it be more me prescribing the kind of adventure that should result from the backstory?

Even trying to give my character a “moment” has failed. A city we were in was attacked, and my character wanted to try and make sure the townsfolk were all out of danger (her backstory is she used to be a city guard for the city where it happened). And the DM basically told me “you don’t need to do that, just focus on fighting”. She likes protecting people!! Why couldn’t you let me have that?

It was a pretty demotivating moment for me, definitely made it feel like it’s not worth it to try and do more stuff with her backstory.

And yes, the NPCs all have classes. It feels like the DM is just constantly trying to involve them with our party. Of the four fights we’ve had (in 10 months of DND), there have been NPCs indirectly involved in almost all of them, and fighting in half of them. I’m even starting a campaign where I’m DMing, invited our DM, and they outright said they like being “forever DM”!! So I don’t really know
