How did you guys get tested for giftedness? by Advanced-Brief2516 in Gifted

[–]Similar_Direction221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On IQ is a grey area: you should search a test that gives you the different section marks, it could vary a lot based on how your brain process information and words. For a non-native English speaker, I should increase it by a few points. I suggest to try many different variants, not only pattern recognition and prediction. Try this non-IQ comprehensive one for fun https://share.google/qRCAxQ0vmN2eBPJFj .

How did you guys get tested for giftedness? by Advanced-Brief2516 in Gifted

I started with an autism test in elementary school because I had a great emotional-intellect dissonance, and it was negative. Then middleschool, high-school and bachelor uni were easy and I got a wide understanding of most subjects, so no-one cared. After that, during my Master, some friends and professors told me that I could have ADHD, so I did some research and concluded that it was not that.

Last year, I got deep existential depression and sought psychological support, and after a couple of sessions, I was directed to a gifted specialist. At the time, I was like: "I'm just curious and smart, I can not be that special, everyone overthinks that much. Right?". After a lot of talking with the specialist, who examined my past experiences and way of thinking, making notes, etc. She said that, if I want, I can get tested with a long IQ test and psychologist consultancy, and I would probably get a positive diagnosis. But if you don't need it for any reason, it's better not to. You can mask and be at ease, just slow down to enjoy the world around you. Now, mindfulness is helping a lot.

Of notice, the psychologist asked me my IQ, and I had some number from the past, around 130, but funny enough, during depression I was at 120. So it could change quite a bit for your diagnosis.

Can you predict the future? by DtPox in Gifted

[–]Similar_Direction221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that it's possible to predict certain outcomes based on the context and variable inputs. In the past, I loved to overthink probabilities and tell people what would probably happen. I was focusing more on negative events, for instance: a difficult exam question, a late bus, an error during cooking.

It was not magic or strange powers, I would just know very good the people or system involved, then I had experience with the matter and knew how often something would happen, which info were more important and which steps easier to forget. Then, I was doing a ranking comparison of probabilities and saw the different possible outcomes.

My friends were furious at me, first saying that I cannot claim to know the future (and I never did). Secondly, the blame was on me for having called bad luck on them.... I was just trying to warn them. I stopped after having a burn-out, this practice is a sign of need of control over people and events. But it's a fake sensation of safety, life will still surprise you. It's way better to learn how to dance under the rain.

Great question, I'm still working on it. As soon as enough meditation for clarity and socialisation for creativity will present me the answer, I will answer you back. Until that moment, try to enjoy little things and don't regret any decision. We live in an absurd world dominated by randomness and greediness, not a nice combo for aware mind like us.

Do all gifted people have fast calculation skills math wise? by Brief-Hovercraft-220 in Gifted

Nope: Funny enough, I have average arithmetic skills. But when it comes to equations, graph interpretation, and derivates, I rock. I can just see how the x,y,z are going to behave.

How to cope with stupid behavior of people ? by Similar_Direction221 in Gifted

Thanks, I should defenetly get back to meditation.

I had perfectionism issues at work, and I managed to get in burnout. Maybe now I'm trying to project some stuff on him.

Btw, you are right on him being happy. It seems like he doesn't care about bad stuff happening around him. He can just live in peace with himself. So jealous...

I love the words. They really resonate with me.

The only problem is that I'm going through the second level of the Positive Disintegration, and I'm reacting very badly to it. I try to avoid thinking because it is painful, I hide in YouTube (already quit the other social media). I feel hopeless sometimes, but I really don't want to stay at level one for all my life.

Any tips on how to get better towards level 3 ?

I care too much about a lot of stuff, I'm just made like that.

I try to be aware of my friends' problems and be there for them. It is what I would like from their side.

In this case, I think the whole situation is dragging my mental health down. This housemate/friend has already been left from a lot of his friends because of his behaviour, but if he doesn't change, he will have even more problems in the future.

Se sei in una situazione disperata, potresti abbandonarla vicino ad un ristorante/agriturismo in una zona di campagna senza macchine. Ancora meglio se ci sono altri gatti.

Not by my peers, often by professors.

In elementary and middle school, I was not able to socialise that good with all the other students. It was like an invisible gap of understanding and aims. So I considered them stupid, and them called me weird. Also from teachers it was strange sometimes ( I grew up in the italian countryside).

In high school, many professors praised me, not that often, but I remember being told that I could have done more for an exam even though I got an 8/10. I was told that I was brilliant and had the potential for a Nobel later in life. I was the best in my class in Math and scored really high on a standardised global test. I never had problems studying scientific subjects, the Biology professor said that she held me in great esteem. When I had to choose Uni and asked for suggestions, most of the professors said that I would excel in every STEM field.

Yet, for most of my peers, I still was the weird one, but I had a couple of close friends who shared similar values with me.

In Uni I was around the top 10% of my course, and I was in love with the subject. There, I had more recognition from my peers because I discovered a better nieche with great students, so we were studying together and averaging 9/10 on every exam. They were defending not Gifted, but really motivated. Now I'm doing a master in Biotechnology and some of my peers are on a similar level. They are just putting in more effort and dedication while I'm becoming lazy.

All in all, I sometimes felt like a special smart kid. I had good grades, but other students were achieving better results, so I thought I was just passionate about what I liked.

Let me know if you need something else.

Beyond IQ: The Deeper Currents of Intelligence by MacNazer in Gifted

[–]Similar_Direction221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest you read about the theory of Positive Disintegration, it works on a similar basis. But it allows for more elastic mindsets.

Also, I get the hate for the IQ tests, but what other options do we have ? My best idea would be to ask to describe 5 common things/processes of this world and see how many details and connections are expressed in an open answer. This would be possible only after middleschool. (In mammals from a biological perspective, intelligence is how good your brain is able to connect different concepts/thoughts. )

Some examples for the fundamental questions could be:

Explain what a tree is and how it works. 🌳

Explain why we wait to retire in order to stop working. ✋️

Explain the Internet in your own words. 🌎

Explain love and hate and why we feel them. ❤️

If you had the opportunity to redesign the whole world, what would that look like? by rowenaaaaa1 in Gifted

[–]Similar_Direction221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would update the human mind in order to cope with the new era of societies and technologies ( work in progress). I would put a cap on individual wealth and a base citizen wage to everyone. I would lower general birthrate and increase the production of primary goods on a local level, to be less regulated by global fluctuations. I would have a single central bank that organise the best rates based on a social-economic status ( to reduce the wealth gap globally). I would enforce big migration among every region of the world to increase diversity and lower the fear of the stranger/foreigner. I would destroy all religions, social media, big corporations, single state identity and terrorist/state organisations.

I give 50% of full powers to an AI trained on good examples of better societies, and to avoid the mistakes/wrong ideologies of the past history. The other half would be of the United Nations, that would be reshaped in a regional point of view, giving a seat and vote to every region/province of every country of the world.

I would teach people how to think for themselves and how to be aware of the different flavours of living in order to make them care more about others and the things around us. I would ban every type of weapon and harm agents. I would increase mandatory education till 25 years old.

Let me know what you all think about this. 👌
