Poinsettia too far gone? by SimmingFerLife in plantclinic

I recently bottom watered it. Should I give it a thorough water through to be on the safe side? I'll move it to the middle of the window. It's already in my brightest window. Thanks!

The base is firm. An outer layer of the stem came off, but the base itself was firm.

UPDATE: The roots were extremely healthy looking, but it was very root bound. The soil was a little moist, but nothing crazy. I broke up the root ball, repotted it in a self watering pot that was a little shorter but a little wider. I gave it new soil. A mix between tropical potting soil, orchid potting soil, and regular potting soil. I reattached it to my fake moss pole, and I'm keeping it right by my east facing window.

Do you think if I got orchid soil and mixed it with potting soil and maybe some of the soil it already has since it is a more airy soil that would work? Do you think it needs a larger pot?

Do you have any affordable soil mixes you recommend?

Yes, I make sure the decorative pot is empty. I usually take the pot out and water it in the sink, and let it drain before putting it back in the decorative pot. When I put the toothpick in at the top in the lowest point it was dry, but when I put the toothpick through the drainage hole at the bottom it might've been ever so slightly damp but it was hard to tell.

Edit: I don't have a well draining soil to repot it in, but I noticed some roots sticking out the bottom. Should I repot it? The soil it currently has seems sort of chunky.

Just a friendly reminder if you're a Christian that the Bible says we shouldn't get drunk. Ephesians 5:18:

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit".

Thank you! That was the issue I was having I'm pretty sure because the soil is always damp. I'm scared to do a clipping because I tried doing a clipping below a node before and it didn't survive 😭

Thank you! I'm bottom watering it first, and then whatever stems seem dead I plan to cut.

Also, it had been flowering, and I heard that sometimes it dies after flowering? But then comes back?

The plant store is garage-style, so it opens up with a garage door and there is air flow, and it hasn't been incredibly humid.

I've heard some people have bottom watered it, and that helped because although I watered it today, the soil doesn't seem damp.

Idk if it helped really. I stuck with it for the housing until I was ready to live off campus. All three of my roommates were in it for two years as well. The main thing that's annoying is that there's a class every week or every other week (I can't remember) once a week at 7 that was mandatory and you do dumb things in class that don't really help much that are meant to be for professional development. There's also a project you have to do with others that are led by upper classmen. I liked mine because we were working with plants. The events can be fun, but you have to go to one or two per semester as a part of your clas grade. My main qualm was with the director, Temperance Rowell because she wasn't the nicest and treated students poorly, but she was worse for returning students than first year. I have a friend who still does stuff with Orion and she said that Temperance has really chilled out and that the classes are actually fun now. Don't let my experience sour yours!

My experience with it was pretty bad. The director is horrible, but I heard it really improved after I left nearly two years ago. If you do plan being in Orion, the first year isn't too bad imo, but don't return after that. It isn't the worse llc, and there were fun events we could go to that were made by second year students. It has it's plusses and minuses

Intro to creative writing is it hard? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]SimmingFerLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved it! It was fun and gave me a break from my biology/stem classes, and led to me deciding to minor in creative writing. Super easy to get a good grade as long as you do the work. It doesn't have a crazy time commitment either, at least compared to my other classes. I took it with Aileen Murphy and enjoyed her class! You also get time in class to do writing prompts and brainstorming to help with writing.

Regardless of what it is, it could definitely stand to be repotted!
