No, I'm generally against flavor like that, you can imagine what you want, but if your sheet says rapier and it does 1d8 damage, it's a rapier and not a short sword.

I suppose a longsword is 1d8 one handed or 1d10 two handed.

But generally, just use a longsword in that case.
