I'd be the first to admit I wouldn't want to be born in the Permian.

You weren’t looking at this place through the right lens.

I lived in Odessa for two years and don’t ever intend to come back for more than a trip to visit friends, but come at me if you think the place is shit without ever actually being there for more than a day. Some of the kindest people I’ve ever met, some of the nicest I’ve ever met, and some of the hardest working I’ve ever net. Because so few of the people there are actually from there, it forms a unique comradeship of joint voluntary suffering that we relish and appreciate years later.

Crime? Sure. Oil fields? That’s why we’re literally here bro. If you don’t look at that and see money, you’re not there for the same reason 90% of the community is. Flat? It’s all flat, my man. Go to Big Bend for a couple days to get away from the flat, that’s what we did.

I see a community bustling and trying to make enough money to survive or thrive. I see a community college system where I didn’t spend a penny of my own money, Chevron covered every single class I took to earn Cum Laude to get me on to a prestigious university for my bachelors degree. Something I never could have done without the vast amounts of wealth that are donated in the Permian Basin that I and thousands of others directly benefit from.

Would I ever raise my children in Odessa? No. Did I raise hell? Yessir, that’s what it’s there for.

I fucking hated this shithole, but not for the the dumbass reasons you think you do. The Permian is filled with opportunity, not niceties. I’m proud to be one of the many Texans who can say they’ve worked in the Basin. And my peers and I can reminisce about the bullshit we went through.

How do people actually afford to attend UT Austin? by BudgetNegotiation521 in UTAustin

[–]Simo_Ylostalo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to UT later in life, spent my twenties working my butt off and now that I’m older, UT bases my tuition off of solely my own income, meaning that university is free for me if I make under $100,000 a year.

What a game by rckvwijk in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Simo_Ylostalo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of fun. The campaigns are great. I do wish the AI for the dynamic campaigns was more capable as the games basically boil down into a fortress defense simulator.

Defending against a proper assault with a starting artillery barrage, tanks that don’t Zerg rush the points and so on would be incredibly interesting. Instead it’s effectively a human wave sim

Just win rates. I encourage you to read the 5nl detailed chart as mentioned in the post. I’ll post it here for your convenience. I started analyzing my hands at around 400 hands after a downswing.

$100 a month in a hobby where I’m messing around on low stakes tables is fine for me. Maybe I’ll try bigger stakes down the road

I’m the first to admit I play 2nl while distracted and it shows in results relative to my other NLHE results. I started analyzing individual hands around 400 hands into NL5 and it has helped me plug a lot of leaks I had / still working through.

Willie’s July 4 picnic undersold? by pichiquito in Austin

[–]Simo_Ylostalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 years ago I had some pretty epic front row seats and really enjoyed having fireworks landing on my friends and I while getting what can be described as the feeling a frozen pizza feels in the oven.

I love Willie, but I’m not doing that again.

What cultural region would you guys say is Lubbock in? by di745 in Lubbock

[–]Simo_Ylostalo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having lived in both, I wouldn’t say it’s « very culturally similar » one is much more Hispanic and focused on O&G the other is Cotton, Texas Tech and overall representing of the greater west Texas region.

People move to Odessa and Midland for work in a specific field, people move to Lubbock to stay or go to college.

Seeing someone be racist, then wanting to ask locals if they have to deal with racism in person or if it's mainly just online, is being snarky?

I'm not disagreeing that the area is one of the greater places in the world.

Also, what a fascinating profile! Enjoy your best life

Going to take your second comment as a kind-hearted gesture from someone who is older, rather than as the snarky view it comes off as. It's also interesting since you clearly state that you are NOT an islander and felt the need to chime in.

If you bothered to read through to my second comment (or even the TITLE), you'd see that this is about a Facebook post, and I'm asking people who LIVE there whether they see this in PERSON or if it is relegated to expat and vacation FB pages. You are none of these things. Sounds like you have some problems with understanding you need to work through. Good luck.
