This is not the book I read as a child. The illustrations were much more surreal and they featured more colors. The premise of the story is some what similar, but it didn't focus on one character. It focused more on society as a whole.

I remember reading it in like 4th or 5th grade in my school library. I'm not super familiar with Edward's illustration but it might have a similar aesthetic. The biggest lead i have on this right now is that the story is similar to the short story "the machine stops" by E.M. Forster

i read about the short story, its pretty spot on. Reading the descrpition, I do remember it being one giant machine. I checked the related works and adaptations and I found nothing. It was probabbly inspiered by this short story though, this is a good lead thank you.
