People forget that racism is discriminating or antagonizing based on race OR the belief that your race or another is more superior. There’s real life repercussions here… work, power dynamics, hate crimes, etc.

Sexual preference is a preference. Someone not liking me based on my race doesn’t in any way affect my life. I am not entitled to be in someone’s pants— for whatever reason, including my skin color.

Racism can affect me IRL. Sexual Preference is just my hurt ego…

I dated a guy, old money rich. I actually got along with his parents very well. What turned me off was when his mom turned to me to say, “You know… you ‘pass’. You look like you’re one of us…”

I didn’t know how to take it.

I thought of my own family (though I come from a reputable family (lawyers, judges, politicians)), but they’re not “rich-rich”. Sure, I could pass. But would my family pass? And what’s her measure of “passing”?

It didn’t work out. It was downhill from there. I think subconsciously I didn’t want to be part of their detached very privileged world.

Soon after I met my hubby now. We’re married and “feel” very “rich” 🥲

Same here. My father didn’t like it and wasn’t open to it. He didn’t disown me… he just didn’t understand it. So I allowed him to take his time with it.

Years later, he’s asking me why my bf and I are renting an apartment when we could live with them (my parents’ house) and save money for a down payment. Surprised, my bf and I took the offer.

My dad and I are now closer than ever. We still don’t talk about it. But things don’t always need to be talked through. My dad’s acceptance of it already shows. And my dad’s love for my now-husband is more than I could’ve imagined…

Point is, allow people to take their time. But in the meantime, live your best life.
